Holding Account?

I still don't get it. Say that we are on a waitlist for another resort that is less points and it comes thru on day 15. The extra points go into a holding account. Well we already have a reservation in Feb booked. Do those points go to that reservation? What is the deal with 60 days? I am so confused. BTW our use year is April.

You can only book the points from the holding account 60 days from arrival. You can call 60 days from your February reservation date to see if you can apply them to that reservation. They will only do it if there is still availability for your February dates and room type. But then it will be too late to bank the February points. How many points is it? You could try to add a night to February. You can try to rent them. They will expire 03/31/09.

If I already have a reservation made. Why would they not just apply the points? I guess I'm confused on the part where you said " if their is still availability for my Feb dates and room type." If I already have a reservation why would they check availability?

Holding account points cannot be applied to an existing reservation unless there is availability for a new reservation at 60 days before arrival, otherwise it defeats the very purpose of the 60 day restriction.

For instance, say you wanted to book a stay February 15 to 20 using holding account points. You would not be able to book it until December 15. If you have an existing reservation for those dates, if there is availability to make a new reservation on December 15th, then Member Services could reallocate your holding points to that reservation. If there is no availability to book a new reservation on December 15 for those dates, then the holding points can not be used.

Well, I'm glad I didn't extend my waitlist then. We are staying at Saratoga Oct 19th -25th. We also have a reservation at Beach Club for Feb. 22nd -
28th. If I extended the waitlist and it came thru, I dont think there would be availability at BCV 60 days prior to my arrival. So then I would lose my points. I think I understand it now.

What is the points difference? If you really want to stay at another resort, I would just take a chance on losing them.

This will be our first trip as DVC members, so I don't really want to start off our membership with losing points. I could potentially lose up to 95 points depending on the waitlist that would come thru. I would prefer to stay somewhere other than Saratoga, but I eventually want to stay at all of them, so I guess it is okay.

95 is alot, I thought you were only talking about a few. Be careful - waitlists are automatic. If it comes through, they will automatically switch it and put the extra points in holding.

Specific points must be used for a given reservation and must be available at the time of the booking. They won't automatically substitute and use other points to your advantage just because you have an existing reservation. This applies to banked and borrowed points as well. But they will often be able to sub them once you get to the 60 day window (holding acct) if you call and ask.

We have passed the 30 day window now, so I'm glad I didn't extend the waitlist. Thank you for the info. Now I know what I will do next time.

Now I am totally confused. I am a new DVC member (last month) and I thought I was well educated. But I don't have a clue about the waitlist/Holding Account you are talking about?
Let me ask a question.
At 11 months I book 7 nights at my home resort using a combination of banked and current UY points.
At 7 months I waitlist for 7 Nights at another resort using UY and borrowed points.
If the waitlist comes through what happens to the points of the original Home Resort reservation? Can they be switched over to cover the satisfied waitlist reservations - thereby using the oldest - banked points - and returning the borrowed points to next year? I thought I could.
Thanks

In this scenario they would cancel the first reservation and use the best points from your contract to schedule the one you got on waitlist. Usually it's the same points but it doesn't have to be. The problem is if the second option is less points and the remaining points are distressed in some way (banked, borrowed, too late to bank or in holding) you could easily lose them. Holding is where you cancel less than 31 days and can only use the points short notice, within 60 days or travel. All distressed points will expire at the end of the UY. So your thinking is correct, it's just that in this specific case the WL is significantly less points than the original, something that's not that common overall but does happen. There are situations where you might want them to use other points, maybe you banked points after you made the existing reservation or have other points in a holding account and want to use those; always tell them these things to make sure they use the weakest points first.

Make sure it's not still going, don't just assume it canceled. An email to make sure should be sufficient and word it in such as way if they did match you in the interim, that you could argue it should not have been ongoing.
