Hmmm....Someone signed my DD out of Obama's speech.

DH and I were upset that our girls schools weren't going to watch it. My oldest was really angry about it. We had planned on letting her skip, and DH was prepared to email the principal and tell her exactly why.

Why skip? Why not just watch it when she got home?

I think it's sad that this nation is so divided on politics that schools and parents choose not to allow their kids the opportunity to watch the President speak directly to them. I think that would have been a huge deal when I was a kid.

My child did watch the speech at home. I'm sure it didn't have the same buzz as it would have had he seen it at school with his peers. IMO, no matter how you feel about Obama politically or any other reason, the man is a huge inspiration to children that you can do or be anything you want to be. Now, that message rings true for everyone!!!

I think its sad that a Politician wants to shove his way into my kids classroom and is choosing to do it during class time trying to bypass me. I don't give a hoot what he has to say, there is no reason on this planet why it can't be said at 5:00 when we're all home for dinner. When the parents are around.

Our school district chose to not bring this controversy into the classroom and sent home a message to parents telling them to tape it if they want their kids to see it. I called my Principal and thanked her for not making it an issue that I needed to address.

Absolutely!!! How sad that The President of The United States wants to inspire your children to do their best!!

A truly sad day!!

This isnt the first presidential address to children:confused3

Did the OP ever figure this out?
sounds like a mistake...but just wondering

Why exactly can't my kids be inspired at 5pm?

Would the time really matter? I don't think so. Those that want to watch, would watch, and those that didn't want to watch, wouldn't.

I wish my child had been given the chance to watch the President speak and the kids that didn't want to watch could have stayed in the classroom. They do it all the time for field trips or movies. I just wish they would have been given the option.

IF the time doesn't matter then choosing a time when all the kids are home shouldn't be a problem.

The time isn't a problem for me, it seems to be for you. My child would have watched it regardless of the time. Now that we have that cleared up, I'm upset at the fact that my child wasn't given the "opportunity" to watch the speech live.

I'm done with the debate. I've stated my concern and I don't feel any further discussion is needed on my part.

Here's why the time matters:

I sub in a school district that has several "at risk" schools and quite honestly, the attitudes of some of these children are just unbelievable. They're failing and for whatever reason, their parents are ok with that. Do you honestly think that these parents would sit with their children at 5pm (or whatever out of school time you pick) and watch this speech? These are precisely the kids who need to hear a "stay in school and do your best" kind of speech from a President who is the same color they are and has a similar background. I just hope they made all the classrooms in our district tune in. DS says he didn't get to see it yesterday, but that they are watching it today in his 7th grade social studies class (he would have been in gym class yesterday when the speech was on live).

I think that you need to know what happened. Obviously, some procedure at the school broke down. If this happens again, is your child going to be excluded from a field trip or worse, will she be left behind on a field trip because someone accidently checked off her name?

I am still very interested in hearing how this happend, EMom.

But, since everyone is stating their opinions on the matter, I will give you a teacher's perspective: There is no way in heck that I would've showed this in my classroom. Honestly, I don't have enough class time as it is. Plus, when this type of interruption occurs, the kids will not settle down the rest of the day. I will bet my LIFE that his speech was on Youtube, various news channels, etc and frankly, kids can watch it at home on their own time.

In addition, what also upset me as not just a teacher but an AMERICAN CITIZEN was the original lesson plans that were to be enacted upon teachers and students. At first, students were told by the Federal Government that they'd have to write a letter to the President saying what they could do for him. REALLY? JFK is rolling in his grave. After parents freaked out, and rightfully so, this mandated lesson plan was no longer in effect.

My school district did not show the speech.

I just watched the speech with my DD whose homesick. It was not shown at school. It was a wonderful speech and it is a shame it has garnered such negative attention.

To the OP: How strange. I'd be wanting to know what happened, too.

The OP should be happy her child didn't have to listen to that. At our school it was not allowed to be shown...thankfully!

I think you're confusing me with the original poster.

This would be my concern as well. I wouldn't care that she missed the speech, my concern would be that communication failed at the school. I'm sure it was just an oversight but hopefully it doesn't happen again during a more serious time.

The discussion here needed to be directed at the OPs frustration that her child was excluded from a school activity. Any discussion of the political emotions and effect of the content of the telecast is inappropriate for the DIS.
