Our family is planning a trip to WDW next Jan. My brother is a history buff and really wants to go to St Augustine. We will be staying at BLT. How long do you feel this side trip will take? Will he need to plan on staying there overnight or will there be time to see the sights and return the same day- also would it be best to rent a car or could he take a Mears bus tour? Thanks for any in put.

I would rent a car and make a day trip out of it. It should take about 2 hours max to get there. If you leave at 8AM and return around 8PM that will give you about 8 hours. I don't think the bus will work.

St Augustine is very nice. There is a lot of great history on that coast (the Vero Beach Treasure Museum, NASA....).

We stayed in Orlando over one MLKjr. weekend, we rented a car, and did a day trip to St. Augustine. I'm the history buff, and we were able to tour the fort and did the trolley tour with quite a few stops. It was very enjoyable, but it was quite chilly. A warm sweatshirt and layers would have been welcomed! Don't get taken in when the natives say "This is unusual, it usually doesn't get this cold!"

PS. Off of rt. 4, if there's time, I would definitely stop in Blue Springs SP to see the manatees who go to the warm waters in the spring when it's cold. That's a "must do" for me at least once every winter.

Parking in the historic district can be tough but the trolley tours have places to park. We do a day trip to St. Augustine every couple of years because we like strolling the historic district. In addition to the fort tour, there is also a winery tour that we enjoyed.
