Hire Car Upgrade

Hello again everyone!

Just need to tap into the experiences you have all had in respect of the hire cars. I'm going to be arriving at MCO at around 10pm local time on the day I travel (a Saturday) and I've booked a compact car at this end.

Do you think it is worth upgrading before I leave or do you think they will have run out of compacts by the time I arrive and I'll get this for free?

you didn't mention date of travel but unless it is in the middle of peak season, I wouldn't count on an upgrade.

If you definitely need a larger car I would book the upgrade before you travel, otherwise there is no guarantee you will get one and you will probably pay more at the airport than you would in advance. If you don't need the upgrade just keep your fingers crossed and hope for a complimentary upgrade. I've always been given a complimentary pgrade, but that's because I always book an Economy grade car of which there seems to be relatively few stocked by the hire companies.

In the days when the Geo Metro was the economy/compact car we never ended up with one as they only ever had about 10! The smallest car we had was a Chrysler Neon (about Ford Focus size) and that was quite adequate. I seem to remember reading that Dollar had scrapped the really small cars and that the Neon and the very similiar Nissan Sentra were the smallest they do. If you look in the Dollar parking lot there are loads of mini-vans, Intrepids and Taurus, but very few smaller cars. If its not a big deal to you then risk getting the upgrade! It will only cost about £30 a week to go up to an intermediate (Ford Taurus) so it wont break the bank if you upgrade before you go either.

PS. My FIL was upgraded to a Caddilac once from an economy because that was all that was left, so it does happen!! Good luck.

I am using ALMO and bought the compact size with my holiday when i booked last year.

Last week i upgraded to an intermediate and cost me £32 for the 2-weeks - cheaper than Dollar, and recommended by Simon V !!
