Hip lanyard for pins

I'm thinking about getting a hip lanyard for pins for my next WDW trip. I love pin trading, but having the lanyard around my neck, along with the cross-body bag I wear while touring, was a bit uncomfortable in the midday heat. Has anyone used a hip lanyard? I'm wondering if they are just a flat panel, so the pin backs are right against you, or is it a sort of pocket, where there will be something between you and the pin back. Also, how does the hip lanyard itself attach to you? I've seen straps on some of the CM hip lanyards, but I don't think that kind is readily available. It seems like the retail ones are quite different from the ones the CMs use, so I'm not sure....
Thanks!

The hip lanyards used by CMs have a clasp. The ones available now with a four pin collection use a retractable cord, the reel of which hooks to your belt or whathave you. I have one of those. The backings are exposed so you have to be careful you don't lose one. I'm considering removing the retracable and just getting a hook from a hardware store.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to think this through- I really wanted the pins off my neck, but I think they might be safer there...
