Hip Hop Music

All us real musicians know that (c)rap is absolutely NOT music. Learn to play an instrument and see what it takes to actually make REAL music, not just talk into a mic and rhyme scheme. If you listen to it then fine, but just as long as you realize that all of those rappers have absolutely no musical talent whatsoever.

There are many groups and individual artists who play musical instruments , and impliment them in their tracks. Groups like the roots are incredibly talented with all sorts of instruments. There is much more to rapping than rhyming. People who just rhyme over a beat are guys like 50 cent and Eminem. They have no message. Talib Kweli and Mos Def use intricate wordplay and metaphors, while trying to say something.

As for talent, I'd like to see a guy who plays a "real" instrument turn a sample into a completely new, and good sounding beat. It is harder than it looks.

All of the real musicians appreciate every kind of music. from the difficult vocal aspects of rap to the guitar riffs of black metal to the acoustic aspect of country to the hollow tones of classical and chamber.

No real musican will ever discount any form of self expression. be it rap or anything else.

I'm not a fan, but I can appreciate the work that goes into making it.

I play guitar and clarinet and I plan to learn organ and piano. I've played percussion and several other woodwinds in my past too.

I am a real musican. I write my lyrics and music and I am self taught. I love music and I discount none of it. I am an artist. and I earned the right to call myself that, and I am proud to do so.

Likewise. I listen to and appreciate all different kinds of music, but I fail to fathom how anybody can call this garbage (rap) music. Nothing personal. It's nice to hear that there are other musicians on the board though. Keep on playing. :thumbsup2

I stated in my post why I respect the people who make it. Its vocals are difficult, and fast vocals are even more difficult. I respect the vocal aspect of rap/hip hop music.

As a songwriter, I don't really like how they're put together, but most of the rappers would make wonderful singers if they ever tried it.

And its always great to talk to other musicians. :)

I tried guitar but it is so hard for me to remember the strings and everything. But I am fairly good at the drums.

I would just like to say this...

Anybody who says rap/hip-hop isn't music is out of their minds. I'm seeing a lot of very sterotypical views on this subject. People are saying rappers arn't musicians because they don't play instruments. Well like it or not, but your voice IS an instrument. Otherwise, people like Vince Neil, Sebastian Bach, Eddie Vedder, Mic Jagger, all wouldn't be musicians. Also Rappers have a lot more to do with the creation of their music, than just coming into the studio, and rapping some words. You'd be supprised just how much they do.

Also when it comes to their songwriting, some of the lyrics they come up with are brilliant. Real life stories, translated into music. Also to say that they all sound the same is ridiculous. You can't say Eminem's "Loose Yourself" sounds like DMX's "Party Up".

Also, someone said try to play an instrument and see how hard that is, well I challenge that person to try to freestyle and see how difficult that is. Oh and no, "Yo one day I was walking down the street, listening to this beat, when I looked down at the shoes on my feet."

I agree with Sparx. Any REAL musician respects every aspect of music. From the beats of rap, to the guitars of rock, to the steel drums of calypso. You don't say something isn't music just because you don't like it.

Alsooo...someone said, "You really can't base true hip hop talent on artist who make a living by talking about sex, money, and drugs". Well that's what a boatload of rock is about. :confused3 A lot of Hairmetal bands made a good living by singing about sex, money, drugs, partying....etc.

AMEN BROTHER!

I don't know what to say, I just can't get myself to like Rap/Hip hop/Heavy Heavy Metal. I mean, if I can find someone who is actually good, then maybe. It is hard to explain, I am just really conservative in that matter.

My youth group went to Roswell and while we were there, we went to an oldies concert. 50's that kind of stuff and I think I was the only kid that liked it. I also appreciate the 80's music too. What can I say lol :confused3

they have no message? sure 50 Cent may not, but Eminem has one. a lot of his songs come from self experience, and mean things. sure he's got some music that is the most random & stupid crap, but a lot of it is sad. He looks into his life & tries to incorporate it into his music.

Who on earth are you to criticize one person's choice in music? The same way you can classify rap as boring rhyme schemes and beats, they can classify your rock music as boring chord progressions and bad lyrics. You make it sounds like your opinion is fact, and that isn't right at all. I might not be into rap or hip hop, but, as I said before, who are you to criticize?

Are you kidding with me? Do you even read into his lyrics? Look up '97 Bonnie and Clyde where he talks about in detail killing his wife, and then drowning her in the sea, and using his child as a witness. I mean, that's one person full of hate.

look, he hasn't had the easiest life of them all. his mother wasn't supportive, she took more drugs than he probably has tried in his life. and he grew up without a father. money was tight. & now everything is screwed up (no matter how much it is his fault xD)

though sometimes with him, i never know when to give up because he'll make a bunch of wonderful songs that are just amazing (When I'm Gone, Mockingbird..) and then he comes out with something like Shake That :sad2:
but it seems he really loves Hailey & Lainey. he knows he's done stuff wrong, and now he's trying fix at least something. somehow.

& it beats some singer singing about something they have no idea about.
if he's no good, how come he's managed to get numerous awards in just one night?
remember, these days, music isn't always rainbows & butterflys. there are MUCH angrier people than Marshall Mathers.

So what? Take it out on your wife because you're not in love anymore? Tie her to a rock and throw her off the dock? I admit, good for him for trying to fix things up, but it seems he's still as mysogenical as when he first came into the rapping world.

Come on people, he's got songs for every angry mood you're in. Guilty Conscience, Kill you, **** On You. I mean, even look at the cover of his debut Slim Shady LP.

Look, it's obvious he's troubled. Generally people get like that because of their past. His wife isn't the best person world either.

When people get angry, they listen to angry music. Generally that's what gets them out of that mood (or at i find that if I'm depressed & i listen to a couple, I'm fine & get on with my day). Just cos it's angry, doesn't mean there isn't a meaning. It doesn't help that he's got about the whole world staring at him, watching his life unravel bit by bit.
I personally only like a few of his songs. I don't find he's the best rapper ever, but honestly, I can't say he's horrible. At least not every one of his songs has to do with how much bling he has and tries to dance around suggestive stuff with the word 'lollypop'

Oh well. I can't argue this anymore. What one person may call "great lyrics" might be "angry ranting advocating killin' people" but you know, what you as a person think is all that matters.

yep.
to each their own.
though i'm stubborn to death & i could argue for years. : )

"At least not every one of his songs has to do with how much bling he has and tries to dance around suggestive stuff with the word 'lollypop'"

Haha. I hate that song.

i do too. little kids sing it & don't understand the REAL meaning.

the only time Eminem has done that was in **** Like That, and he was referring... to his lollypop. ANYWAYS. i don't even like that song. it's stupid & disgusting.

Well first of all I would like to say the thing that people don't get about eminem is he didn't grow up in the ghetto's of Detroit, like the movie 8-Mile would suggest. He grew up in freaking Warren Township. Although with that said, it's not like he didn't struggle.

My next point, here are lyrics from some other Eminem songs....

Have you ever been hated or discriminated against?
I have; I've been protested and demonstrated against
Picket signs for my wicked rhymes, look at the times
-Cleanin' Out My Closet

I'm supposed to be the soldier who never blows his composure
Even though I hold the weight of the whole world on my shoulders
I am never supposed to show it, my crew ain't supposed to know it
Even if it means goin' toe to toe with a Benzino it don't matter
I'd never drag them in battles that I can handle unless I absolutely have to
I'm supposed to set an example
I need to be the leader, my crew looks for me to guide 'em
If some sh*t ever just pop off, I'm supposed to be beside 'em
-Like Toy Soldiers

Hailie I know you miss your mom, and I know you miss your dad
when I'm gone but I'm tryin to give you the life that I never had
I can see you're sad, even when you smile, even when you laugh
I can see it in your eyes, deep inside you wanna cry
Cause you're scared, I ain't there, daddy's with you in your prayers
No more cryin, wipe them tears, daddy's here no more nightmares
We gon' pull together through it, we gon' do it
-Mockingbird

Plus others. He's not all about killing his wife. :confused3
