During out last trip we spent a day at FW and now my kids want to camp at FW.

We have never camped and don't own any equipment.

First, are we crazy for considering camping at FW? (that is being beginners)

If we are not crazy what would we need to buy?

I don't think you're crazy at all! You have many options for staying at FW! :thumbsup2

1. Buy a tent and equipment
2. Rent a tent from Disney (they put it up and take it down for you). They also rent equipment like cots
3. Stay in a cabin
4. Rent an RV and have it set up for when you arrive...all you have to do is bring your clothes!

I'm not sure what the ages of your kids are...but kid's love FW! I'm happy to answer any specific questions you have!

My niece wants to go to Disney World this year so my sister and I are attempting to pack her van this November with a tent and necessities and take our younger children. We are looking at this as an adventure!

I would say that FW is the best place for beginner campers! We go in our RV because we're not the tent camping type. There are a ton of companies that you can rent from :)

The Fort is great for first timers. We bought our first camper in 2004 and took it right to the Fort. Leaving Thanksgiving day for our next trip the the Fort.

So what is involved with a hook-up.

If I am reading it correctly, I would have public water and electrical outlets at the campsite.

Do most campers cook at the site?

And the BIG question is what about when nature calls.
I know there are the common houses (or whatever they are called) with toilets and showers but do people in tents use camping toilets for Number 1?

Absolutely

some cook some dine out.

there are plenty of comfort stations, some use just a 5 gallon bucket with a lid for nite time and some have portable toilets and some run to the CS.

1 very big roll of plastic to cover up the sand/seashell mix that the tent doesn't cover...that stuff gets everywhere!!

For the night time pees, I bought a Hassock (small portable toilet - bucket, seat and lid essentially). A trick I learned here and have used - kitty litter inside the liner bags. It soaks up the pee and keeps any odour down.

To go along with that... buy good tent stakes (if you end up getting a tent) cause the cheap stakes that come with most tents won't hold for anything in that sandy mix.

Ya gotta start somewhere and I can't think of a better place for first timers to camp than Fort Wilderness.

Or it could spoil them then they'll have to keep going back!:rotfl:

Oh, wait. That's right. No, don't go to Fort Wilderness. If you want a real camping experience find a local Boy Scout troop that has a Philmont Trek scheduled and do that. (then you'll be so turned off on camping that there'll be one less family wanting space at the fort):rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:
