How open is the beach there? Is the beach a public one or is it open to guests only?

The beach is public but if you go through the beach house it requires the key card.

It is public but you do have to pass the Palmetto Dunes security gate to get to it, which means you have to be a resident or resort visitor to PD. There are only a few really true public beaches on HHI, where anyone can go and park and go to the beach. Most of HHI is hidden behind gated communities.

In Hilton Head all beaches are "public" from the ocean to the highest water mark on the beach. However, access to the beaches is not public except in designated areas and thus when you have to cross private property to get there you need permission of the owner. Thus, for your purposes it is private to guests at the local resorts that are right there unless someone from somewhere else decides to walk a very long distance along the beach to get there.

Singleton Beach is near the Disney Resort. You pass it to get to the resort on 278.

Forest Beach is down by Sea Pines. Go to the Traffic Circle, take it 3/4 of the way round, go around the next traffic circle and you are there. It's rather nice place.

HHI beaches aren't known for surf...they tend to be calm. Tybee Is, down here Savannah way, has more waves, and people.
