We have never been to Hilton Head before, does anyone know what it is like in January? Thought it would be fun to visit during MLK weekend just to check it out, figure points are cheap, I can probably get cheap airfare also. What is the best airport to fly into? Is a car a must for this resort? Can you rent bikes and peddle around? Thanks for the info. I'm aware it is not really swimming weather, but figured it would be an inexpensive way to visit and decide if we would want to go there during "in-season"!!

We are going in Dec and we are flying into Savannahe Ga. We definitely need a car to get from the airport to the resort so we figured we would keep it for the weekend. Weather avergaes about 69 in Dec. So it will definitely be nicer than the 20s here in NY :)

Just remember that average temperatures are just that- AVERAGES. We went once in February and I'm sure it didn't get above 50 all week-and rainy! Went to Pinckney one day, and Christopher cut it short because we were all so cold and miserable. DH and I walked past an ice cream shop without a second thought-and we usually love ice cream, but it was so cold. Although we rented bikes for the week, it was only warm enough to ride them once. But am I complaining? No-I loved HH! Never missed my trip to Big Murgie's den for hot cider and warm cookies every day. Can't wait to go again next March, and although I hope the weather's warmer, iif it's not-oh, well, I'm sure it'll be great anyways.

I am also considering the MLK weekend. I have been to HHI in March and July, and I know from being there in March that the weather can be very iffy, despite what the "averages" say. My question is this - are lots of restaurants closed in January since it is a slow time?

We stayed at HH one year over NYE and then a few days into January. We did notice a few restaurants in the shopping area adjacent to the resort were closed for the winter. Some that were open when we arrived (late Dec.) had signs that they would be closed for a while during the winter. I don't really know if that is the case all over the island or just in the area near the resort. And even though it was cool while we were there, we had a wonderful trip and went back on our Fall Break.

You will definitely want a car when you go to HH. Although there are several restaurants you can walk to, there are many MANY more on the island that you may wish to try.

The same goes for shopping.

There ARE stores that close for the off season, and as previously posted, some of them do close right after the New Year. But there are still lots more to try!

I have been to HH several times in January in the past few years. Morning and night temps can be cold to very cold. I like to go at that time because it is a quiet time for me to relax and the points are so few. There are many restaurants open in the local area, so you should not have any problem finding places to eat. You probably would want to rent a car if it fits into budget so you can drive to some of the reastaurants. Since I drive there I have no recommendations on airport, but Savannah is not far away.

We have been there three times during Christmas week and the temperatures have been mid to upper sixties during the day and mid fifties at night. Pleasant weather for walking, biking, and sightseeing but not good for swimming. However, the hot tub is very comfortable!
