just wondering and if you fly what airport and how long is the drive to hilton head??

You have two choices, you can into HHI itself on a small prop plane or Savannah. Savannah is about a 45 minute drive to the island and offers more variety and cheaper flights. The drive is easy as it is all interstate and 4 lane divided highwy. It can be bad near the island during rush hour and on Saturday in the summer when all the time share owners are coming to the island.

Don't know where you are at but most of the people I know in NW OH drive down to HHI(it's about 12-13 hrs). I've been down only for business conferences and I have flown into Savannah. Usually connected through Atlanta.

We just returned from a great vacation at HHI. We are from Connecticut. We flew into Charleston SC (couldn't pass up great price). It was a nice 2 hr. ride to the resort from here. I brought our GPS down with us:goodvibes

It is faster for us to fly direct from Indy to Jacksonville and drive the three hours than it is to connect and fly into HH or Savannah. So that is what I will be doing in just over TWO WEEKS - yippee!

If you like seafood and if you have the time en route from j-ville to hhi, jump off I-95 at exit 58 in GA and head for Pelican Point in Townsend...the buffet is to die for! http://www.pelicanpointseafood.com/

I am sooooo envious! And I am in need of a key lime pound cake from Signe's! Just gonna hafta wait for November! Have a great trip!

you see for us it would take 14 hrs to drive. I could see driving if we broke it up a bit drove 1/2 way and stayed at a hotel over night and continued the next day.

It is about a 14 hour trip for us -- we have done it six years in a row. We live in CT and we either drive to my sister's in Baltimore and then leave early the next morning and get to HH late afternoon the next day, or we leave early from here and drive as far as we can, and then have a short drive the next day to HH. There are 5 of us, and you need a car down there, so it doesn't make sense for us to fly. It has never been a problem -- and you get to see all those great South of the Border signs!

We always drive. It's roughly 9 hours for us, but can be longer depending on shopping stops!

Our drive is about 9 hours.

However, I think splitting your long drive into two days is a good way to do it. Do a big chunk on the first day and leave early to arrive early on the second. Arriving early you'll get a better choice of rooms and what will seem like an extra day at the resort up front.

We fly into Savannah, otherwise it would be a 1300 mile drive. We almost planned to drive on our next trip, but fortunately, some Frequent Flier availability allows us to fly. But I don't know how much longer we'll be so lucky-flights to Savannah and Charleston (where we've flown also) are so expensive, over $500 PP for us! Flying to Jacksonville was recommended to us as being much less expensive, so we might look into that next year, or honestly, we've considered moving closer to there when DH retires.

i noticed you go to hh off season how is it?? this is the time we figure on going since we probably won't be able to get in during the summer months.

We have gone the past 6 years in March (2 times) or April (4 times) -- that is when we have had a school break. We have been fortunate -- in all those trips (ranging from 5 to 7 nights) we have NEVER had a rainy day. We have come in after really bad weather weeks, and left with bad weather forecast. We love going then, feel like we can use the break at that time.

Unfortunately, this year we only had a February break (son is a swimmer, so we had to stay put) and a long weekend in April (too short to go to HH), so for the first time we are going in the summer. That will be interesting -- looking forward to seeing the summer activities (fireworks and fun by the pool) that we have never experienced. We are going August 17th.

I am so missing HH -- felt like I was going through withdrawal this spring. It is so laid back and relaxed -- we love it there. We play tennis, lots of bike riding, swimming, mini golf, beach house etc. August cannot come soon enough for us.

Only bad thing is Chef Gordon stopped doing A Private Affair after our third visit -- that had always been a highlight for us!

We drive to HHI. Its about a 12 hour trip for us, although last summer we hit bad NoVA traffic and it made it 14 hours. We broke it up though into two days worth of driving. We have two little ones and did not want to attempt the long haul all at once.

We drive from Baltimore- it is 10-11 hours. Very easy drive- no tolls- i95 all the way.

Could you post or pm me directions? We would be coming down 695 towards I-95 (we live in Westminster). Others have also mentioned going down route 97 to 301 into VA.

95S
stay left at Washington beltway (go around the east side of 495 where 495 & 95 run together)
continue on 95S through Richmond, North Carolina, South Carolina.
Take exit 8 in SC (278 East)
After a few miles turn right into Shelter Cove (I think it is called Neptune Lane)
You are there!

I am not sure if you are coming from Westmister if this is the best way to go- I am pretty sure if you were any farther west (like Frederick) you would take 81 south or something like that. Depending on the time of day you are travelling, a route that let's you bypass 95 at DC and No. Va. might make more sense.

Thanks! Yes, I think that is why some suggest staying on 695 to 97 to exit 7 (rt. 3-301). I think that way does bypass No. VA. But I'm not sure. Thanks for these directions!:goodvibes

These are the airports I check- HHI(always very expensive), SAV, CHS, JAX, ATL.

We have flown into ATL several times for a great price.
