We're leaving for HHI on Sunday and can't wait! Anyone been to HHI lately that has golf recommendations? Right now we have some plans (Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones, Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills, Melrose, HH National). Any thoughts on these? Any other courses we shouldn't miss?

THANKS!

We were there in March and played Palmetto Jones and Palmetto Hills as well as Harbour Town at Sea Pines. Before we went I heard that the Fazio course was not as good. Of course when we were there some said they liked that one best. I would say the Palmetto Jones course is the best of the three Palmetto Dunes courses (I didn't think the Palmetto Hills course was in very good shape). It's the only one with an ocean hole. You do get a good deal if you play 2 of the 3 for $220. The PGA course at Harbour town was great - we were there just a few weeks before the event so it was in great shape. Probably not worth $250 - you can get a much better rate if you stay there but that's not an option if your on this board, right? Not really long but tight fairways and small greens. I enjoyed it. Not sure about the rest on your list. Keep in mind that the Palmetto Dunes courses are very near Disney (same road as the disney beach house and closer than the beach house if I remember correctly). Enjoy.

HH IS GREAT GOLF! You will love it, I'm sure. I will second Sea Pines. very well kept and enjoyable course. In all cases, bring some bug spray. The Noseums can be really annoying.

Palmetto Dunes-particularly Robert Trent Jones and Arthur Hills courses are 2 that are recommended by the front desk at the resort. Dh asked for their recommendations for next year. He played Shipyard and Indigo Run. Shipyard was nice, but he disliked Indigo Run. However, maybe it was a bad day there. Harbortown was great, but very expensive, but like he said-"you really have to do it once" (at least that's how he justified the expense). There's one, just off island, to the left as you leave the island (can't remember the name) that the front desk also recommended.

DH and DS love Indigo Run, Shipyard and any/all of the Palmetto Dunes courses. They were not crazy about Hilton Head National.

They have also played some of the courses in Bluffton (Island West comes to mind) with mixed reviews. They don't get as much play as the ones closer to the resort, but they also have lower greens fees.

You can ask for a list of course recommendations when you check in. The front desk will even arrange tee times for you if you'd like. There are also a few free magazines/pamphlets that you can pick up at grocery stores or in front of restaurants, etc. that tell a bit more about some of the courses and any specials that might be offered.

Have a wonderful time.

I have played Indigo Run and Island West. Indigo is good, a hard course, the carts have GPS. Rather expensive however.

On the other end of the island (toward I95) is Island West. I liked Island West, 1-Much CHEAPER, 2-Less of a crowd.
One factor-PLAY EARLY! It is very hot in the summer, so set up a 7:30 tee time, and you will be done by 11:30 or so, plenty of time to hit the beach/pool the rest of the day. That is what I am planning to do in July when I get there.
2/3 days of golf, and a week at HHI DVC resort, can't get any better than that!!!

Even thought it's expensive I think Harbour Town is a must for any keen golfer, at least once. When I last played there they were doing a deal that meant you could play all three courses there once each. The cost was basically the same as paying full price for HT and the second course and the third was free. As I didn't know any of the courses in the area and the 2nd and 3rd courses were priced pretty much in the region of all the others inthe area I thought it was a worthwhile deal if you're definately going to play HT.

I found going in to the local golf stores you can pick up flyers that offer information and deals on local courses. There's a golf shop if you turn right out of the resort and drive about a mile (shops on the right of the road), I found the owner of the shop was very helpful in offering a couple of ideas on the condition of a few of the courses. Important to get local knowledge as each course can have a week or two when it's not in it's best condition if they are working on rehab for the greens or tee boxes.
