Hilton Head at Easter

We are Hilton Head owners but have never been; our first trip was planned for April of this year but we had to cancel. I’ve rebooked for next year’s April vacation, but it happens to fall over Easter next year. Has anyone been over the Easter holiday? Does HHI do Easter Egg hunts? Are the crowds insane (ie, am I crazy for going over the Easter holiday)?

What should we expect weather-wise? We’re not big beach goers; rather, we love long walks in nature and animal/bird watching. Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge are our two favorite Disney resorts, and National Park vacations are among our favorite non-Disney trips to do, to give context.

Thanks I’m advance!

Prepare for crowds during Easter. You mention that you are not beachgoers but resort will be crowded as will restaurants

I was recently on HHI. We tried but couldn’t get Disney HHI - I didn’t realize it was such a popular resort! Coincidentally, we stayed literally across the marina from the resort tho. People said it was crowded while we were there but it didn’t feel too crowded at all to me. we walked over that way (DVC) to catch the sunset and saw that they have a long boardwalk out to a gazebo within the marsh which I imagine is beautiful for bird watching. The inlets and marshes were beautiful and the island has amazing bike paths.
On the marina there are restaurants and shops to poke around if you don’t want to drive. They also have rentals, you can join a dolphin tour, sunset tour…… rent your own 2 person pontoon boats, paddle boarding…we opted to hire a private boat to take us out into the waterways.. We split that with the couple we were traveling with so it wasn’t too crazy. Our captain was a retired firefighter/paramedic who did water rescues so we could not have felt safer! You wan walk from the DVC resort to the marina (Shelter Cove) it’s very similar to walking from SSR to Disney Springs but on a MUCH smaller scale of course! I loved HHI and will definitely go back - I’ll plan ahead and shoot to stay at the DVC resort next time.

We have been twice around the date Easter fall next year and the weather has been wonderful- warm during the day and pleasant at night.

VWL owner here, plus I'm intimately familiar with DHHIR. Weather that time of year is generally nice, but it can also turn chilly and rainy as it is early to mid-spring. There are Easter eggs scattered around the pool area on either Easter itself or the day before--can't remember exactly. And, yes, all of HHI will be quite busy but doable. Finally, as for long walks and animal/bird watching, this is a great place to come. The resort alone has lovely grounds around which to walk. Within a short drive, there are a number of places to visit where you can watch nature to your heart's content. In particular, and free, is the Pinkney Island nature preserve, a 12-15 minute-drive from the resort. I believe you'll enjoy HHI. ;)

The PGA event in Harbortown will be going on the week before Easter, and so the last day of the event will be on Easter Sunday. That was the same thing the year we went. The event draws big crowds, but USUALLY if you avoid Sea Pines, it isn't too bad. Lots of spectators are staying on the island and looking for places to eat, but generally they stay in Sea Pines. If you're interested in going to the PGA event, on Easter Sunday the year we went they had a beautiful outdoor service on the golf course before the tournament. Also. at the resort, there was a nice buffet at the Beach House, but I don't know if they do that any more.

Thanks everyone! I really cannot wait to go! We bought into HHI partly due to all the reviews we read and realized we’d likely want to own once we visit (and knowing we’d need to own for certain times of year). My long term thinking is once we (semi)retire we can stop at HHI to and from WDW. And then the perfect small point resale contract popped up and the rest is history!

I keep debating trying instead for a late fall or winter trip, given that we’re not going for beach/swimming and points go sooooo much further in the winter, but we already have other trips planned and my husband and kids are not as fond of “going away” as I am. As it is, my husband is already griping that 4 different trips over 9 months is too much, lol! If I moved to the winter we’d be looking at 4 trips in 7 months, but a long weekend around MLK Day is a possibility too.

As a general rule, late fall is a fairly good bet, but winter is very much hit-or-miss. Although more crowded, generally Easter finds the best weather of those three options. Your idea of stopping by HHI going to and/or from WDW is something a lot of folks do, so you'd be in good company. :thumbsup2
