They do have a free shuttle to universal, but you get to the parks later and it picks up right when they close. The drive is pretty quick though. The resort is nice and has been renovated. Its my favorite resort in Orlando still.

We've stayed there twice in a one bedroom unit. I really like it. The rooms are very nice and have comfortable bedding. We enjoy the pool areas for getting sun and at night we watched a movie at the main pool one night. We did use the snack area to get sandwiches and ice cream, where they are a bit slow, but the food was good.

To get to US/IOA we took International Drive down to whatever road it is that leads into the park/parking. (Sorry I don't remember the name). You do hit several lights going that way, but the traffic isn't bad and seemed a better way than getting onto 1-4.

I stayed here for two nights in a two-bedroom villa in March prior to a Disney Cruise. The villa was very spacious and clean. The living room/dining room/kitchen was somewhat dark. I liked how the balcony was screened in. We enjoyed the grounds most of all as I have two very active boys. They enjoyed the pool, ping pong, basketball, and tennis. The pier was nice, I enjoyed watching the turtles. Staff were friendly. They had some pool side activities for children, they were expensive. One in particular was make-your-own sundaes for $6. Instead we went up to the store right above the pool area and bought ice cream for $2 per bowl. They have a kids club with computers and board games. We rented a car for the two days so I cannot comment on shuttles to parks. I would stay here again.

As an alternative to taking I-Drive, go west on Central Florida Parkway under the I-4 overpass then turn right onto Turkey Lake Road. It's about 4 or 5 miles to Universal property and should take you less than 10 minutes to get to Hollywood Way (on the right, just after the new Cabana Bay Resort). Go about a half mile down Hollywood Way and then go straight across Universal Boulevard (the intersecting road that's the road that HM referred to to get from I-Drive to Universal) to the theme parks' parking garages.
