Canadian PM's Office: Hillary Camp Made No Secret Assurances on NAFTA

I'm starting to think that covering American politics is far easier than covering Canadian politics. But trying to cover the interplay between them both? A challenge of an entirely different magnitude.

This NAFTA story offers no easy answers, no obvious heroes, and a passel of possible villains pointing their fingers at each other.

Here's the latest from the Canadian Press:

Quote:
Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton never gave Canada any secret assurances about the future of NAFTA such as those allegedly offered by Barack Obama's campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office said Friday.

With the NAFTA affair swirling over the U.S. election and Canadian officials skittish about saying anything else that might influence the race, it took the PMO two days to deliver the information.

After being asked whether Canadian officials asked for — or received — any briefings from a Clinton campaign representative outlining her plans on NAFTA, a spokeswoman for the prime minister offered a response Friday.

"The answer is no, they did not," said Harper spokeswoman Sandra Buckler.

That response will come as a relief to the Clinton campaign, which has angrily denied that it has engaged in the kind of double-talking hypocrisy of which it accuses Mr. Obama.

Great thread guys! I've been following it and I'm de-lurking now just to ask something. It was Keith Olbermann who wanted to make a scandal about Hillary giving secret assurances to the Canadian govermant regarding NAFTA. Now the story proves false. Has he apologized or recanted in any way?

I used to love Olbermann, but his bias against Hillary has turned me off completely. I don't watch his show or MSNBC anymore. If he did not set the record staight then he is not only biased, but also dishonest.

So how many delegates from Wyoming? Obama 10 and Clinton 7?

So how many delegates from Wyoming? Obama 10 and Clinton 7?

there were 12.....7 Obama and 5 to Hillary....:rotfl2: we seem to get different projections all the time ...got mine from FOX how about you?:lmao:

not a big deal in the delegates(only 2 difference today) and it is a REP State that we Dems will not most likely not get in the Election and it is another caucus...but it is one more added to the Obama belt.

This is going to be long so bear with me.
I would have posted this on the liberal thread, but it would be ignored and I figure most of Senator Obamas' supporters lurk here anyways:goodvibes

The enthusiasm for this election is something that this lifelong Democrat couldn't have imagined. It's unbelievable!

I have for the most point have stayed away from the bickering and the baiting that has gone on from both sides. Most of the time, it makes me laugh. sometimes though I have gotten angry. Some of the stuff posted here is mean spirited and very snarky.

Both of our candidates' views and beliefs are so close in philosophy, it's like comparing apples and apples.

As of right now,Senator Obama has a commanding lead. I know that the super delegates are going to decide this at the Convention and all the debating back and forth between us is not going to change that.
We can only hope they make the choice that will carry our Party to victory in November.

For all of you that support Senator Obama, I hope that all of the bashing of Senator Clinton and President Clinton stops. He is going to need both of them in the general election. Bill Clinton is the biggest fundraiser the Democrats have. He could sell ice cubes to Eskimos. Senator Clinton is going to be involved in the administration somehow. You don't want to hear this, but some deal will be worked out at the Convention. I would be surprised if this didn't happened.

I am not going to speak for all of the Hillary supporters on this thread, just me.
I would be proud as a Democrat, but more so as an American to see Senator Obama elected President. I just want the Hillary bashing stopped.

Hi Michael,
I feel that if there is going to be bashing or disagreement of the candidates than that should be kept in that thread...in other words if in the Obama thread one wants to discus how they don't like/hate Hillary that is fine with me but to please not come here and throw that in our face and we should not go into the Obama thread and throw our opinions in there face....makes for bad blood.

The liberal thread should be used to discuss the conservatives and left at this time at that. Only because of the way this election is going. There are a few Obama supporters that come in here and bash Hillary although to them it is there right to go into any thread they want and say what they want...well so be it. I have one person that I have put on ignore.

I have also voted many times (I am 50 ) and have not seen this type of hype in many years but there were and will be again. Many young voters don't remember how messy so many elections have been. Anyway I and the other Hillary posters have no problem coming in here as long as it is kept civil but as some Obama posters have said to me...That's not my call.

Welcome :thumbsup2

I am looking at the NY Times and they have not posted the delegate count, so I was wondering.

I read your post as race baiting.

If i read it wrong (or if you didn't communicate your opinion clearly), please clarify.

I don't think Kiki was "over the top" because she (& I & others) read it the same way.

Please respond profdsny, & if my read is inaccurate i'll personally breathe a huge sigh of relief. (& retract my troll comment).

.

I visited with prof on the BO thread & I am 100% convinced that he posted a sentence that could be read two different ways & he meant it one way & I (& others) read it a different way.

I retract my comment above & believe he (or she) was posting in a non-confrontational (but debating) manner.

I hope to engage in spirited / clean discussion with prof again if he's inclined.

Hound, just wanted to say you are a class-act. Looking forward to a healthy debate on the issues with you.

The delegate count isn't as important as the vote count.

Since neither candidate will get to 2025 & since BO will end up between 60-160 delegates ahead of HC (no matter what happens going forward), the final delegate count won't be as important as the final popular vote to the SuperDelegates. & it will be the SuperDs who will decide the nominee.

Keep track of the popular vote.

Thanks.....I think we'll have at least 3 months to "rumble".

Thanks for reminding me of Hillary's experience

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080308/ap_on_el_pr/clinton_s_experience_4

There are two sides to every story

_NORTHERN IRELAND: "I helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland."

Clinton traveled to Northern Ireland five times as first lady, and was a tireless advocate for the peace process. But she was not directly involved in negotiating the Good Friday peace accord.

She did encourage Irish women on both sides of the conflict to come together and get involved in a process that was dominated by men.

Former Democratic Sen. George Mitchell, who brokered the peace accord, said Clinton was "quite helpful."

"She became quite active in encouraging women in Northern Ireland to engage in the political process and in the peace process, and ultimately the role of women was important in moving the process forward," said Mitchell, who is neutral in the presidential race. "She was one of many people who participated in encouraging women to get involved, not the only one."

John Hume, the Catholic leader who shared the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the peace accord, credits Clinton for playing a "pivotal role" in the peace process.

I wonder what Obama's foreign policy experience is?

What amused me is the count of the vote (caucus):

Barack Obama 5,378 61%
Hillary Clinton 3,312 38%

I think there's more people in my city than democrats in this state.......

Not saying it shouldn't count - its just so small!

I wonder if all those dems know each other! ;)

Absolutely it should count. (Hear that Obama lurkers? :))

And for what it's worth, HC beat BO by 2,000 votes in Texas. Oh...wait a minute....it was 200,000. :rotfl:

We get more folks at High School football games than voted in today in WY. But i love them.....& they're important.....& they count. :thumbsup2

Speaking of "counting"... FL & MI remains a clustersumthin....but it looks like more folks are finally coming to the (only) conclusion that it HAS to happen.

Anybody see the Ragin Cajun on one of the shows? (i think CNN) He sounded like vintage DisUnc & said not only do they HAVE to do a FL & MI redo.....but he'll personally raise 15 million in the next 3 days (on behalf of HC) to pay for the "dang thing" if BO will pony up 15 million.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE James Carville!!!!

He is the true epitome of loyalty.

This is such an exciting election - and living history!!!

I just hope the ticket can be combined - Clinton\Obama - (obviously this is how I feel) - or Obama\Clinton

I just think Hillary matches McCain better (I'm thinking of debates).

So did anybody see BO being interviewed on the airplane recently (today?) stating that he had "called Loren Michaels" suggesting "Ok...now we're even...".

AHHHAAHAAAHHHAAAA :rotfl:

:lmao:

Keep track of the popular vote.

It's fairly easy to track the popular vote in primary states and in states where the caucus is really a firehouse primary. But in some of the true caucus states, the only thing we get reported is the count of the delegates to that state's nominating convention where they then apportion the delegates to the national convention. I'm sure party insiders may have that info, but I haven't seen it published.

Anyhow, I think the Supers should follow the will of the people and that means they should vote the leader in pledged delegates meme coming from the Obama camp rests on a false assumption, namely that the will of the people is actually measured by the pledged delegate count. Not even close. Texas is proof enough of that. The will of the people in Texas was made clear. 51-47. The delegate count doesn't reflect that thanks to the after the vote vote. It also shows that caucuses are notoriously bad measures of the will of the people in and of themselves.
