We currently have internet through our cable provider. We are moving and I am researching which internet to use. We can get either high speed through the phone company or through the cable company. The phone company claims their service is "always on" and you can use the phone and the internet at the same time. Is that true or do we need a second line for that? I like not having to tie up the phone to be online.

Any opinions on either or another suggestion on other options?

If they are quoting you DSL it is always on and you do not need a second phone line, you can use both at once. The internet never interferes with the phone. I have found DSL to be faster and more reliable than cable even though theoretically cable is faster.

I work in a company that provides high speed internet service so I'm fairly familiar with it.

They didn't actually say "DSL" when I checked their website so that is why I wasn't too sure if it was the same thing or not.

Quinn222 may be right as I'm not very familiar with it at all, but I do have Xbox Live and some on DSL don't have a fast enough connection to host games. I don't know anyone on cable that can't host. Maybe it depends on the area?

I will say that my old dial-up was much more reliable than cable. Toward the end however, I was getting that dreaded busy signal way more than I liked. For the speed however, I'll not be going back anytime soon. I might lose my connection once a month for a half hour or so. I'd imagine that DSL would be as reliable as dial-up used to be.

As much as DS13 would love to do Xbox live, it isn't happening so I don't need to worry about that-it does say it is Xbox/online gaming compatible though. I wish there was a way to test the service before you buy. Our current cable company is wonderful and I WISH it was available where we are moving. I would keep all my services with them if I could. We never have problems with our phone, cable or internet (all through this company).

Yeah, Xbox live can be played with DSL or cable (no dial-up, so the one you're looking at must be DSL even though it wasn't listed as such), but some users can't host games with DSL and that means that at least in some parts, DSL isn't as fast. I wasn't trying to sell you on Xbox Live. LOL

From my understanding of cable, it really depends how far or actually how close you are. The closer you are, the faster the connection.

I used to have an addy for reviews of various online services, but that was so long ago. I'm bumping this up because maybe someone else can help out if they know of a site. I wanna tell you it's epinions, but I'm just not sure.

Could be "FIOS"...... a fiber optic system that is now being rolle out. Verizon has it near me.... WAY FASTER than cable, but not available everywhere yet. And you must pay one year in advance.

Nope, that is DSL..... and you must be less than 15,000 feet from the signal's transmission. ( that number MAY be bigger now, but that was the number quoted me 5 years ago by the telephone company ).

However, cable is like a big network. The more people online in your area on cable, the slower YOU are.

We have been considering switching from cable to DSL primarily due the high costs of cable. My DS-22, however, isn't thrilled with any potential change. He's been told that with three wireless computers running and the fact that we are usually on at the same exact time, DSL could not support it. The speed would slow to a crawl. Does anyone have any experience with this?

We have both. My computer in the Living Room has DSL, DS23's computer is his room is Cable.

He is so much more impressed with cable at this time (he's only had it hooked up for about a week).

i have had cable modem for about 7 years now. Very Very fast. you can download songs in a minute, its always on, and we set up a wireless network in the house very easily. we have 7 computers connected on the network and none of them are slowed at all when we are on them. for the network, all you have to do is buy a wireless router and then each computer needs a wireless card or usb card. definately get cable modem. email me if you want about it.

That is actually what my company has (not Verizon) and our fastest speed is about five time faster that the fastest DSL. Speaking of which, DSL comes in more than one speed. If you did have xBox live and you're having hosting problems see if you can boost your speed up.
