High School Volleyball Try-Out Drama (Out of Town)

I think you should personally contact coach
I would not leave childbehind for this
Unless this sport will get her college scholarships??

If a coach really wants someone on their team or in their play trust me an exception will be made. Just like in real life.

That would be totally unethical of a coach. I can't imagine parents letting a crooked coach like that get away with doing things like that! Our school would be up in arms if a coach pulled a stunt like that!

OP I would just have daughter stay home or fly her home for the try outs. Right now my daughter and I are on a two month road trip- I am flying my daughter home from Texas for two days for something school related and then she will fly back and meet up with me and continue on our road trip.

High school coaches do not want to hear from parents. The P's dd already asked, and was given an answer. She can now make her decision based on her conversation with the coach.

I'm waiting for the opposite to appear in a thread. Someone's activity will have a participant who did not have to attend the tryout.

OP, not fair to pass the buck on responsibility here. If you daughter wants to participate, you need to adjust the schedule. Expecting that the coach should change for your schedule? Completely wrong.

Sorry OP, but you all knew about the time when try outs would have been. Your daughter has been on the team for three years. There is no excuse that you didn't take it into account and it is unfair that you are now trying to blame the coach.

I also have a strong feeling based off of experience that the daughter was reminded at the end of the year as to when about try outs would be.

No one should be given special treatment.

I actually know of two kids that didn't tryout (1 time each) for my DDs team during her 4 years of high school.

Neither exemption was granted for a vacation.

Have heard plenty of "We just schedule around sports." Haven't heard a single, "We had a vacation planned and coach made an exception" or "We were away but son/daughter made the team anyway." Just goes to show it doesn't work that way!

UPDATE:
We decided to call Southwest and get her on a different flight home 2 days earlier. It was only an additional cost of $8 to make the switch, so I'm relieved about that. Her boyfriend's parents will be picking her up at the airport and taking her home. It's not an ideal situation, but it will work. It sure is amazing how some things can really sneak up on you. I really thought volleyball would've been a week or so later than it is. The try-out dates aren't even listed on the website yet-they still have 2014 information. It isn't the most organized bunch running the show.....but then again, apparently we aren't either.

Glad it worked out for you OP. Good luck with the move and the upcoming season!

Ugh - hard decisions. Glad you were able to find a resolution.

my thoughts?
Given that you would ask your younger to give up a sport she clearly loves and is committed to ... To move her sister into college ... I would be afraid she would resent her sister if you "make" her go. You are essentially asking her to give up her sport for her sister.

Unfortunately, lesson learned. If she is going to be a senior, I'm surprised you were unaware of HS sports tryouts? Our state sets the dates - they are easily found in spring for following fall. In fact, the district has a 'fall sports information meeting' in May to ensure people have the dates and forms. I could understand if you had a rising freshman, but I'm surprised you don't know the drill by now? An email to the AD last spring would have answered your question. I know our date is a week later than I thought due to Labor Day being so late, so I checked the state website, the HS website and even emailed the coach to confirm tryout dates.

good luck to her!

DD did miss lax tryouts her senior year but was put on the team. They were a week earlier than normal and she was out of town for two of the three tryout days helping the swim and dive team win a state title for the same high school.

She did tell the lax coach she would skip swimming but he said no way. Her points ended up being needed to secure the title. She was a four year lax starter in HS and college. That is why she was willing to bow out of swimming if she had to.

In our state tryout start dates are also set by the state. If you go to the state athletice website you will see when the first start date is allowed to be. Now granted coaches do not have to do them on that date, but most of them start immediately with tryouts and then go right into practices.

It wasn't short notice, this was a team the daughter had played on before and most try-outs happen around the same time each year. The OP even said this in a later post.

Assuming it will be "around the same time"' as previous years (and getting it right) isn't at all the same as being TOLD, "it will be on this date". No excuse for any Summer tryout date not to be published before the end of the previous school year. Pure sloppiness on the coach's part.

We don't have our official school year calendar for 2015-2016 yet. Teacher's union still has to vote and approve.

Knowing it would be around the same time, it would be pretty easy to find out when the exact dates would be.

Honestly, for most states, your local school district calendar is meaningless. Sports are usually a state mandated start date. Typically, you cannot start tryouts before a specific date. Most schools start on that first Monday (or date?) allowed - I know our tryouts start at 7:30 am (and you better be there by 7!).

Band is the same way. Rehearsals every week in the summer and band camp two weeks before fall. Summer went down from three months to two weeks.

Yeah, my sons band was that way and throw in he was a varsity soccer player and summer almost didn't exist.

Our saving grace was our band did all possible to communicate dates very, very far in advance. The band instructor did not allow sectionals to begin until after the 4th of July (we are off from mid-june to the day after Labor Day) and sectionals were on a "come as often as you can" basis and kids were OK to miss time for family vacations. But come August, things heated up with a week of all day practices at school and a week of away camp. But they did their best to keep the sames weeks every year.

Now soccer was another thing. "Captains" practices 3 mornings a week (led by captains, coach not there) starting the end of June. You were expected to be there if you could, OK to miss for other commitments like vacations and jobs. But around Aug. 8th the read practices began and could be any day, any time. You were given a schedule, but expect it to change at the last minute and you were expected to be there. And that included Labor Day one year. Thank God the band teacher was understanding and allowed DS to do what he needed to do.

This summer is so relaxing! DS graduated and DD between elementary and Junior high! We actually have the whole entire summer again :-)

To the OP, I think you have to find out what your daughter wants to do. As a mom, I would tell the coach to stuff it and go about our family plans since he gave so little notice. But isn't about the same time every year so you could have foreseen this happening?

I think parents should take back some of the power these high school coaches throw around. If the parents demanded advance notice of schedules and all stuck together about it they couldn't get away with what is often complete disregard of anything but the coaches agenda. Our coach was terrible about changing dates and times and expecting the kids to just be there. Families were not considered and they should be ...these are still kids and these things impact the whole family. But everyone goes along with what ever the coach does because he/she yields all the power over the kids and which team and playing time. Crazy!
