High School Students & Spring Break Trips

There was an article in today's paper regarding the new trend of high school students taking trips (without parents) over Spring Break. It sounded like many parents were trying to rationalize things by saying that "a parent will be in the area" or "they'll be going to college soon, I have to start trusting them".

I think that children grow up too fast as it is now, and this type of thinking just adds to the problem. Save Spring Break trips for college unless you are with parents, or a school sponsored trip.

Wondering what you thought on the subject.

As the mother of a teen, I can tell you it's not happening in this household! What kind of moral message are we sending to our kids if we condone what goes on at spring break?

Senior year in highschool went to myrtle beach from VT with a group of friends- CO ED!!! we drove down 4 cars ...had a blast

when my kids are seniors sure they can go

i would have been allowed, but didnt since i went on senior trip in march of senior year..

I wasn't allowed to go and I wouldn't allow my kids to go. I feel that children under the age of 18 shouldn't be traveling without adults. Its not that I don't trust my kids, but there are too many things that can happen and there needs to be someone of legal age in charge.

I wouldn't let my kids go without an adult unless they were 18. Actually, my son won't be 18 until April of his senior year, so I'd guess I have to say they need to be seniors.

My son is graduating in June. When he was around 12 or so, we were watching a show a tv about Spring Break and I told him then that as long as I draw a breath it will never happen.

Six years later, nothing has changed. The subject has never even come up.

My feelings are that once they are in college, I won't stop them from going on Spring Break. While they are still in high school and are still minors, I'd have to say no. As long as they're under 18, the parent is responsible for their actions. In this day and age, I just don't think that it's a great idea for kids under 18 to be going on this sort of trip w/o a guardian who is over 18.

No way. But when DD graduates from High School next year, we would consider sending her on a trip with friends, perhaps with our DVC points. She won't, however, be 18 until the following June.

My dd told me today that her boyfriend's brother is leaving Sat. for his Senior Class trip. They are going to WDW, this is being held by his HS. MY dd did not have a Senior Class trip by her HS. I did take her and a friend to WDW for a two week trip during her Senior year.

I have been teaching High school for 8 years and they have been doing it at least that long. These kids actually rent beach houses! They would rent vans and drive down if they could

I'm not talking about class trips, I'm talking about a bunch of friends getting together and heading to Florida, Mexico, Texas, wherever on a trip.

Knowing what goes on during Sprink Break...as long as my dd is in high school, there is no way I'd allow her to do it.

No way. A few years ago, we saw a program on the goings on there, and both my kids (DS 16, and DD 14) have said they don't want any part of it. My DD thought it was disgraceful the way the young "ladies" behaved. They both still feel this way. DS will be a senior next year, and we can't imagine him going. NOT AT ALL

My 2 girlfriends and I went to Daytona for a week our senior year of high school. I was 17, they were 18.
We drove from NJ to VA, and then took the autotrain down.
We drank the whole week, snuck into dance clubs, met boys, our hotel room got robbed..and we chased the guy and caught him(!), pretty much had a ball. LOL
I have NO idea what my parents were thinking, or any of our parents actually! They were pretty strict, I think we were all shocked that they said yes.

My kids-no way would I let them!!!
