I'll admit to some sticker shock regarding the meal plans. We also went with the unlimited plan for the first year but we'll see if he needs it.

He's going to UConn so there are pretty limited options for eating around there other than on campus.

yep, that's the one I was talking about for over five grand a year. It's only going to go up, too. CT is really, really starting to aggravate me.

What's a hotpot? I'm not thinking that would be allowed for DD as the contract states:

Cooking appliances permitted in South Village housing are small microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and automatic shut-off coffeemakers. All other appliances are prohibited.

A hot pot is along the lines of a coffee maker and I would be surprised if it wasn't allowed. This was what we all had when we went to college. We used them to make coffee, make mac and cheese, etc. They pretty much just heat up water.

DS Meal Plan is $1750.00 per semester. He can choose either 19 meals per week and $50 declining balance or 15 meals per week and $90 declining balance.

We got his Billing Invoice today. $14,220.00 per semester and after scholarships the balance we have to pay is $45.00. We already knew this, but boy it's nice to see it on paper.

Move-in day was 5 weeks from Thursday, it's coming so fast. I picked up hangers today and 2 pkgs of DS favorite pencils black Ticonderoga. We have quite a pile of things accumulating.

DD is in a suite with two other girls in her room and three other girls in the other bedroom (the two bedrooms share a bathroom). There are, of course, too many kids, so they are tripling-up in a double. The Room charges are lowered for all the triples, so that is $2100 per semester instead of $2300... every little bit helps. There is a single undergraduate fee of $595 for all undergraduates carrying a full credit-load(not broken out as parking fee, etc.)

Back in 1983 when I was in college, I was also in a double turned triple for this very reason. It actually wasn't too bad but it would definitely depend on the size of the room.

Just found this and I thought I'd take a peek. My dd starts her senior year this fall in HS and we're getting ready to do all this. I'm scared after reading all this...tips anyone? Anything to help me thru this year without going crazy.

What about housing? What are your kids housing situations and the approximate cost?

We're paying about $2000/semester for housing. He's in an old-style dorm with hall bathrooms, no suites. His dorm is pretty much the last choice of most students. It's so far out, practically off campus, from the other dorms and academic buildings. But I can see a lot of benefits. The walking will be good for him. It's very close to the gym, which is amazing and he's looking forward to using it. There's a dining hall right in his building, which will be cheaper because the all-you-can-eat style won't take money off your card if you go over the allotted amount for a swipe. And I won't have to wonder how disgusting his bathroom is getting.

his meal plan s only at that dorm and it is unlimited and open from 7 am to 7 pm..his snacks are in the full kitchen.. for all this he pays $10,000 per year..(yes it is high) but dorms with a/c and 21 meals are much higher....

Well, DD & her roommates have been in touch - the roommates have come up with a fridge, microwave and printer, so we'll come up with the TV. Any recommended brands/sizes/tips? A couple of things...
*Space will be at a premium since the room will be set up as a triple, instead of the usual double.
*We cannot put holes in the wall for any kind of connected stand/mount. Any ideas?

The $10,000 is the housing AND the unlimited mealplan? That's really not that high. I'm paying approx $3500 for the year (spring and fall) for meal plan and approx $6,000 for the year for housing so almost the same as what you're paying.

Move in day last fall for DS18 and people were hauling in 54" flat screens When we visited later, those tv's blocked the entire window space for those rooms. It was crazy. DS and his roommate had a 19" flat screen. Their beds were lofted and they had a futon under one and the TV and game stations under the other. They probably could have gone as big as 32" as far as "space" went under there. Will the kids loft the beds? Do they have built in desks or shelves of any kind in the rooms? You may want to wait until the kids get everything moved in and arranged before you buy the TV--you will probably have to make a Target run anyway. That way you will know where they will use the TV. DS and his roommate had their TV on top of the mini-fridge.

I like your idea of a Target run but with all the students coming to school that week, they might be sold out of what we want. I did find a TV pedestal-stand online that looks interesting http://www.mountsandmore.com/Peerless-LCFS-100-PE0310.html .... It would get the TV off of a horizontal surface (like a bureau). Putting the TV on top of a closet is problematic since the 'closets'(furniture with closet rods) are kind of high/tall plus I like the idea of having the TV attached to something, was thinking if I do get this stand that it could go behind a bureau and the bureau would help to counterbalance the TV.

My son won a 32 inch flat screen last year. He wants to take it, and just bought the stuff to hook it to his computer. It will probably be on the window ledge. It seems nuts to me, I don't think he needs a tv at all. (part of my opinion might stem from losing the use of the best tv in the house!)

That looks like a good option for a small room and a way to get the tv up to "bunk" height. After moving DS19 in last year I said there is no way I would get 'everything' for the twins ahead of time like we did for him. We will make a Target run for stuff after we get them moved in and figure out what they need--especially stuff like laundry detergent, etc. I would still wait on the tv and stand until they get settled--you can always order it online and have it shipped there if you need to.

Move in day is the 24th, and I think parents are supposed to leave around five or six. There is only a Walmart in town, and I imagine thay may sell out of stuff. I told my daughter I could come back to campus the next day before I drive home, but I think she is doing an all day volunteer thing. So, basically, we just have an hour or two between the planned activities on move-in day to try to purchase any last minute items we forget.

Do most girls like to coordinate their bedding, or doesn't it matter? The room comes with a microfridge, so I guess we need to figure out who, if anyone, is bringing the tv. At least we don't have to unload the car. There is a tradition at her school of upper classmen moving the first years in...from the videos I've watched, it looks like they swarm the car and do it in about five minutes flat. I won't get my roommate until August 1st, either. Hopefully, I'll be able to talk to her and figure out who's bringing our microwave, fridge, tv, etc. I'm not worrying about coordinating bedding.

In DS#1's school, the move in for freshman is fast... all of the football team ( seemed to me) just grabbed stuff including DSs big frig, totes, boxes and TV and took off for the room..

but i was thinking that DS#2 would have a different experience at a BIG TEN school and plan on moving him in ourselves..

Depends on the school. I know at the U of MN you are assigned a time to have your car parked in front of the dorm, all 30 minutes of time. They have people there to help you unload-I think from the Frat houses.

Her hot pot is basically a small electric pot, like a coffee pot. You put in 4-6oz cold water, flip the switch, it comes to a boil and shuts itself off automatically. Then she can make her hot tea or cocoa!

Great news today! DD18 was awarded the $500 scholarship from her HS music and theater dept. Yay! Lord knows, she worked her little butt off for them. She deserves every penny of it.

And we heard on Friday that she has officially been awarded work-study. Double yay! There are very few work-study slots available, so she is just thrilled to get one. With her Pell Grant, SEOG, her Stafford loan and her little scholarship, she only needs to come up with about $1000 to pay off her bill. But once he work study kicks in she'll get about $1750/semester so it all evens out.
