High School class of 2011

OMG! My son got his acceptance letter today from Carnegie-Mellon! He doesn't know it yet because he isn't home yet, but he is going to be SO excited! I know it is an acceptance letter because it says "Get your kilt on!" on the front. (Their mascot is the tartans)

That's the GOOD news, the BAD news is, a postcard also came saying that the 2011-2012 school year will cost approximately $57,200!!! :scared1:

He'd better hope he got a TON of financial aid or he will not be going.

Way to go! :yay: Now, to find the money. $57,000. More than my first house cost.

Fabulous news!!! Very good school. Your son is clearly quite intelligent. I'm certain he MUST get it from you. ;)

But holy cow!!! My daughter's dream school is only 51,000. Is CM one of the most expensive schools in the nation? I don't think there are any schools that top 60 grand yet, but that is sure coming darn close.

OMG...$57,000+?!? I think the most expensive I've seen in DD;'s choices has been American at about #50,000....but in the end it all depends on the merit aid, I doubt we'll get any need-based aid.

agnes!

i don't have kids who are seniors, but i have twin brothers who are! one is likely going to a nursing program near our home and the other is going to a local 4-year school's honors college for now. the nursing one refuses to leave home, so he is set and happy. the other is going to be pre-med so we are going to first work on getting him accepted to early admission medical school programs or he will transfer to a top 20 after 2 years to keep costs down, as we do not get any financial aid. if he gets into a program, then we're going to see what he wants to do, be it stay and study abroad or transfer anyway for the experience of going away. choices, choices!

also, as i see that everyone is talking about financial aid and how some of the better schools or kids' top choice schools are more expensive than you thought, i strongly suggest asking your child to transfer from a cheaper school after 2 years. they can get intro and gen-eds out of the way and save a ton of money. for example, the mom who talked about their child getting into hopkins for bio engineering: start off somewhere cheap, keep grades up, and then transfer to finish up.

I've always had that same opinion and if he wasn't doing BME that would be the plan. Problem is, you can't get into a BME program undergrad if you don't start as a freshman. I remember one of the questions we asked at hopkins was, what if he was accepted to the university but not into the BME program, can he transfer into BME for sophomore year...the answer NO!!! and that was the answer across the board at most colleges we looked at.

Congratulations :cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

Your post kind of reminds me of that commercial where the girl comes in yelling "I got into the best school in the country" and she and the mom jump up and down- then they cut to what the dad hears "I got into the most expensive school in the country" :rotfl:

Good luck on the financial package, I hope he gets plenty of aid so you don't have to stress out about paying for it all!

minkydog - please do let us know about the audition, minkypup/your DD has been in a lot of people's thoughts & prayers.

DD got some good mail from one of her universities yesterday...we already knew she was accepted but this was for aid.

Wow. Just WOW. Of course now we'll have to make a campus visit since this particular school has moved up a notch or two.

The last two schools don't give out acceptance/aid decisions until sometime in March....auuuuuuuuuugh.

We just got home around 3pm. The auditions went well. The judges were warm and welcoming. They did a 2hour dance class, followed by audition. Then later they did their ballad & up-tempo numbers, and their monologue. I'm glad I was there to run errands, cuz DD forgot her music ANd her outfit & boots at the hotel! The auditions were closed, but we could hear through the door. I tried to concentrate on my book, but i could hear everything. I think I was more nervous than she was!

As we left the auditions, DD & her friend who went with us(who also auditioned) were saying how nice everyone was, how they got some new facebook friends, and how comfortable they both feel at this school, like they already belong there. :goodvibes Music to my ears.

They said they will be making decisions in the next few weeks. Probably won't know about the scholarship until April. Even if she doesn't make the cut for their Musical Theater program (they only take a limited number), she can still major in theater and participate in musicals, and try again next year.

:goodvibes Sounds like they had a great experience auditioning. The next few weeks you'll probably be stalking the mailman (like I've been doing:lmao:) I'll keep your DD in my prayers.

That sounds great!:goodvibes That is where you were hoping she would want to go, right? Good thing she liked it and if a friend is going, it will make it all that much easier.

Yes, this is the school that has been the best fit from the start. Valdosta State has *everything* she wants in a college AND it's affordable. It has taken her awhile to get on board with the whole going-to-college thing, but i think she's there now. It helps that we took her and 9 of her drama friends to VSU back in November. Her drama club teacher graduated from VSU, so he hooked them up with fine arts connections and a really good campus tour. In fact, as a result of that trip at least 4 other students have applied & been accepted. This trip was really nice, though. Even though she and her friend were both tryinout for the same thing, they were fully supportive of each other. They seemed relaxed and knew their way around campus this time. Of course, it helped that the weather was bee-you-ti-ful--78 degrees and sunny. I think they were able to picture themselves as students this time.Which is funny, because back in November DD was digging in her heels and never wanted to leave home!

Sounds perfect, especially the affordable part. Really, though, it's a feeling they get that says "this is the place", isn't it? When will she hear the good news? I'll keep my fingers crossed for her.

Thanks. :goodvibes I'm hoping she'll get news in the next couple of weeks.

I remember when i found my college. I was visiting my Boyfriend at his school for homecoming. Within the first 30 min on campus I had at least 10 people welcome me (and not in creepy ways.) It was just one of those small campuses where everyone knows each other and everyone gets along. I called my mom from the dorm where i was staying and told her I was going to transfer immediately. And I did. I found my niche and stayed there for about 5 years.

Feel like things are moving along:

We have submitted the student employment application, and the FAFSA!! :cool1:
