High School class of 2011

Well it's just 2 days until we can fill out the FAFSA. How many of you are going to go ahead and fill it out by estimating and then adjusting it when you get your taxes done. I kept thinking it would be forever before we would have to fill it out and now it's here. I'm not looking forward to it, but I want to get it done.

Thanks for the reminder, I had already forgotten. I'll probably work on that Saturday using our 2009 tax returns, then adjust it when we get the 2010 return done. We usually get all that together by mid=January, so it won't be all that bad.

Yes, dd 17 is a senior. She had decided on going to beauty school (which is much more expensive than I could have thought!) so she didn't take SATS. Now she is looking into Voc for that, or attending our community college for a year or two while she works. I want her to have the "away from home" college experience eventually so hopefully things will work out.
Yes, we have to buy cap and gown, and no, when I graduated ('78) we did not have to buy them!
DD18 got her GED so this is my first experience with senior year stuff!

DD still hasn't heard yay or nay from any of her 5 schools. We will have to fill out a tentative version of our FAFSA...we don't usually get all our needed taxes/paperwork until maybe early summer (we always file an extension), and all this isn't because of us dragging our feet but because of how long it takes other entities (family stuff) to get *their* taxes done.

I think as soon as DD gets that first acceptance everything will feel a little better. And I *swear*, if one more person cheerfully says 'oh, it takes until April sometimes', I am going to simply scream!

I just went to the FAFSA site and the new 2011-12 Fafsa is up. I did not start it yet, so I'm not sure if it's "live", but it's there. Strangely, it says it was last updated Jan. 1, 2011. Today is still Dec 31, right?

I was told at a financial aid seminar that I should request pin #s before I fill out the fafsa to save a day or two processing time, although I plan to do the Fafsa tomorrow, so I don't think it will be a huge deal. Is there an EASY way to do this? I got my daughter's pin by starting a dummy Fafsa (old year) a few days ago (they had to verify with social security first...took maybe two days.) Now I realize , I think, that I need a pin too. You would think it would be somewhere on the home page, but I don't see it. Has anyone else done this? Did you have to do a dummy fafsa first, or is there an easier way? I guess I'll probably just wait until tomorrow, but it is frustrating to try to get ahead and not know how.

ETA: Oh, duh. Just went back, and it says "pin site" right on the top of the page. Hiding in plain site. Off to get my pin # started now.

edited again: I started filling out dds name, and it reverted to 2010-11. It would be nice if they actually let us start it ahead of time and just finish and submit tomorrow, but since it's not really live yet, nothing to do but wait.

I just applied for both our pin numbers. My plan is to tackle the form tomorrow. I really need to get DS yearbook ad done. It is do by Feb. 1. I have been putting it off, because I know I will be very emotional picking pics for it and deciding what to say.

Wait a minute...Do I need to have a FAFSA number for me and for DD as well? I thought that we just had to have one for the family since it is our expected contribution...someone please put me out of my misery on all this, maybe MrsPete if she's around or one of the other recently-experienced parents of college-kids.

have I said lately how much I HATE forms?!?

Yes, Agnes, you both need a pin...or so I was told by a college financial aid officer. They still had my pin from when my oldest went to college, and she's 32. I didn't think they would keep them that long!

yeah, you both need a pin. But when DS#1 went to college, the expected family contribution was humonogus/large..(sp) and financial aid from the school was at 8%...so we never got any funds from FASA.. now that I have lost my job and DS#2 is second one in college, we will see what they give but i am not hopeful.. i will not mortgage my house more or eat cat food so my kids can go to college away..

I've never filled out a FAFSA this early...most schools don't even want them yet and it takes maybe a half hour at the most. Really isn't all that hard. I had expected it to be brutal after all I had read prior, but doing them for 3 years now and it's not all that big of a deal.

Ok Nancy, I believe you... I just hate forms, but maybe it won't be so bad. I'm glad that I found out about the 2 PINs for the FAFSA (one for the student & one for the parents). Sheesh, I don't know how I missed that - we'll have to wait until we get our PINs anyway,

What website do you go to in order to request the PINs?

Weren't you originally interested in Hospitality with a concentration in Theme Park Management or do I have you confused with another poster? My DD is directly admitted into a Nursing program and is thinking about taking that. She has been accepted everywhere she has applied but can't come up with a major at the other universities other than something in the sciences. I am a nurse as well and I don't think you can go wrong with a nursing undergrad. Once DD figures out what she really wants to do she can go in many directions with a BSN. Law school, med school, PA, graduate level nursing specialties would all be options.

Good luck!

YEP. I originally was but I am dual enrolled currently and last semester I took a hospitality class. After that, I realized it was NOT for me.

I so far have been accepted into UWF and FSU. I am still waiting on UCF and USF.

Even if I get into those two, I am accepting UWF. It is closer to home and I know the area well.
I have been thinking about my major, and I have pretty much decided on Nursing.

Just sayin', I'm in love with FSUs war chant song. :upsidedow Their band. So good.

I got accepted to my top choice that I applied to ED. So, I'm going to college! I got the letter about two weeks ago. It's such a strange feeling.

So now that I applied for the PINs, do I have to wait to hear something before I can begin the FAFSA?

I'm going to wait until we both (DD & myself) get confirmation of our PINs...otherwise I think we won't be able to access our saved information - we won't be able to prove we are 'us' kwim?
