High School class of 2011

Wow, everyone is moving in already... we are still 2 weeks away from dropping off DS. Sept 1 is the big day!
We're still shopping for his needs...I haven't picked up any shampoo or soap yet :upsidedow and I need to get to Radio Shack for a coaxial cable or his tv will just be another coat rack.

I'm starting to get nervous about missing him after he goes, and about the possibility that he will miss us, and get a little bit homesick.
Keep me updated on how the first weeks are going and how you all are getting through it.

Our drop off day is September 18th. I feel like I have forever yet.

Move-in day is rapidly approaching for us. Glad to see so many of you have survived it.

Has anyone else's kid had stress related stuff going on? For the past few weeks, my daughter has been telling me about strange dreams she has been having, and they pretty much all have to do with separation anxiety. She rarely remembers her dreams, but has been having very vivid ones lately. Then, her face started breaking out. She rarely has any issues with her face, but it was noticeable this time. Thankfully THAT has calmed down, but she has another stress related issue.

We were on vacation this past week, and she made me aware she was having some skin issues in a place that is normally covered by clothing. I wasn't aware of just how bad it was until she came out of the shower crying because of the pain. She showed me, and yikes! Off to the walkin clinic the next day. The dr. there did not know what it was. Mentioned MRSA, shingles, breast cancer....daughter was freaking. We were sent to a dermatologist who was immediately able to tell us what it was. She said it often flares up with stress. We've also noticed my daughter's eczema is flaring up again, but I'm not sure if that is something that can be stress induced or not. My poor baby. I know she'll be fine, but she must be SO much more worried than she is letting on.

OMGosh... we are so feeling your pain. DD had been very irritable, is also broken out, having stomach pains and will not focus on getting her stuff organized. She is having very stress filled dreams lately and is actually avoiding going to sleep because of them, which just in turn creates more irritability. One of the reasons we are moving her into the dorms is because she is putting so much effort into creating space and distance between us, no longer wants to do many activities with us, feels like she is the only college bound kid that hangs out with the family, etc. :sad2: I am really worried for the future of our relationship with her if she stays here. She is so desperate to be on her own and in charge but is scared to death. This is a rough ride but I'm sure well worth it in the end.

DS had high blood pressure when he went into the Docs office for his last shot. They rechecked it a week later and still high. We are going to see the cardiologist in 3 weeks but are all hopeful it is stress related to the move. Poor kid!

I think this is pretty normal for young adults. They seem to have to go through a period of turmoil where they are trying to break away from the family and figure out who they're going to be on their own. I know i did. And i didn't do it gracefully either. I was a PITA for about 3 years.

Dd was just like your daughter before she left. She spend the whole summer hanging out with her friends and spent most nights sleeping over with one or the other of them. She just touched base with us about once or twice a week. I think she's going okay at college. Already she has been talking to us more frequently and seems to genuinely miss us.

Our DS25 went through a spectacularly bad transition when he was between 22 and 24, as well. The good news is he turned it around and we all get along very well now. I expect the same will happen with DD18.

Try not to take her moods personally. It's just something she has to go through. This is the time to take the high road. Be respectful and expect her to be respectful to you. In a few years I predict your DD will draw closer and you will once again be in fine favor.:goodvibes

This is going to sound like a silly question but how do I know what address to send a care package too? The college and then room number? I don't think I have anything that actually says.
Thanks!

Most colleges have their own central campus mail center, rather than mail delivered to individual dorms. DDs college has a page where they can register for a mailbox. After she registered, they sent her address which is a PO Box by campus email

My DD's school has mailboxes in the lobby of each dorm. About a week before move in DD got an email with her mailing address. I've already sent a card, a small package and I have amazon sending her a stapler.

hummm, I know he has a box because he had a key. I bet I need to know the number on the box. I wonder if it is his room number? What do you think the chances are he knows? hehehe pretty slim I think!

Does anyone have any experience with the Purex 3-in-1 laundry sheets? I picked these up for dd to use at school, but now I'm wondering if they will really do the job.

On a brighter note, I think we have all the shopping done except for water, which I'll pick up when we get there, curtains (boy, do I wish the college could provide us with window sizes BEFORE we arrive), and possibly a rug. My daughter's roommate has already purchased a rug, but we don't know if it's roomsize or a smaller one for just her half of the room. The college did tell us the size we would need for a room size rug, so the rommmate may have purchased a big one. Unfortunately, it is pink and red, and my dd is not a pink and red type girl. Now, if we were talking purple, blue , and green, she'd be all set! We're hoping the roomate doesn't go out and buy pink curtains before we get there. She lives far closer to campus than we do, so I'm betting she will be there early. There's a certain window for arrival, and leaving at the crack of dawn will get us there near the end of that time, while her roommate only lives an hour away.

I bought the Purex sheets to use on vacation since we stayed in a cabin with a washer and dryer.

They were definitely convenient, and seemed to work ok, but we mainly washed towels and underwear. However, I did notice that they left light blue stains on the load of underwear. The blue did come out when I washed them again. Just tell her to be careful with delicate items.

What my daughter used in college was the Method brand pump bottle detergent from Target. She said it worked great, took up very little space in her room and smelled really good. I guess you just put 4 pumps in every load. I bought it for my son as well, so we'll see if he likes it too.

We have used the Purex 3-in-1 sheets in our camper for several years, with good results. I like that they're dry--no leaking--and lightweight to transport. Never had a problem with them staining anything or causing a problem. I sent DD18 off to college with 2 packs of them.

I've used them here before when they've been on sale and never had any trouble. So I also sent my DD18 off to college with a package. It just seems easier than measuring and toting detergent. Plus the weight and spill factor.

We have had the residue left on our clothes the first time we used them but now I fill the washer to the lowest level and add the sheet, agitate for about 30 seconds and then add the clothes. No problems since. :thumbsup2

How was the first day of class for everyone's kids?

Mine said it was not "that much" different than high school. He liked that it was more laid back and that the teachers seemed to really want to get to know the kids. So it sounds like a good day. He was really happy to get to choir and said the room was so much better than what they rehearsed in at high school. He also found out we have to buy the tux for them to perform in which is fine. I guess he will have 2 very similar ones now as the one from high school is really close but not close enough. That's ok I am glad he is singing!:lovestruc

Just talked to my daughter, an engineering major, and all she said was "this is going to be a lot of work!" Ha ha -- you thought college was going to be easy???? She knew it would be a lot, but she had all 4 classes today and was overloaded!

Well DD had 1 class this morning and then 2 more this afternoon/eve which she is still attending so I only heard about this morning's class so far.

English Comp I. She already has a paper due on Weds and she didn't have one of the required books...guess they must have added it after she bought her books because we got everything required. She said there were only 15 kids in the class so that's great! And a girl she knew from orientation was in her class. Didn't really say if she liked it or not. So, I don't know...so far, so good?

She also had to have a lock fixed on her bedroom door. I guess you could lock the door but if you pushed on it the door swung wide open. This is a brand new building, never been lived in before so it's weird that there are issues like this but apparently it's already taken care of so yay!

I figure no news is good news  We hadn't heard from DD all weekend, but she just texted her dad and things are going fine. She found a shortcut to one of her classes and she found the 2nd dining hall, the one with all the good vegetarian choices. So she's happy :goodvibes
