High Resolution Pictures

Hi guys, I am certainly NOT a computer person nor a camera person and I need some advice. My DD just got married and our friends took wonderful pictures of the wedding with a D200 and D300. He set the resolution very high and we just can't do anything with them like email for example. We have a digital photo frame that can't even accept them. Is there a way that we can change all the pictures resolutions at one time? If so, what is the recommended resolution?

He copied the pictures off the camera onto his Apple laptop and then burned a memory stick and that is how we copied them onto our HP computer. Could that be a problem? His Apple against our HP?

Do you have Photoshop or any other photo editing software? They fact they are of a high resolution is really not a problem. It would be a problem if they weren't IMHO. You just need to resize them for web, but DO NOT SAVE OVER THE ORIGINALS. You will need the originals if you ever want to enlarge the prints or make an album or whatever. You might could try this software for resizing photos. http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm I usually use CS3 for resizing and sharpening for the web though.

As said, do not convert the originals convert a copy. Make them about 50% and then when you want to email pix, use the windows converter to pare them down further only for the email. Right click on the image in Explorer, click on send to and then choose email recipient. It will then give you an option the make the one of 3 sizes and add them to an email for sending.

It sounds to me like the files could possibly be in Nikon's RAW format which is what his D200 or D300 would produce and is how an experienced photographer would shoot them. If he went straight from his camera to his computer to a memory stick without converting them, then you would have problems trying to do things with the photos.

Can you look at the files and see what the extension is? Is it .JPG or .NEF? If they are JPG, all you have to do is follow the advice above. If they are NEF, you will need to convert the files first. But I think that irfanview might even be able to do that for you.

If you cannot view them on any computer that does not have one of the Nikon or adobe products installed on it, then I can almost guarantee the person shot them in RAW format. Like the pp said look at the extension of the file...if you are not computer literate ( no offense) but a file extension is the three lettes at the end of a file like dcs0001.jpg...chances are these will be dsc0001.nef. If you can't see the extension - the instructions for showing file formats differ depending on the version of Windows you are running, they are generally the following:

1. Open any folder on your machine.
2. Choose "Tools" - "Folder Options".
3. Click the "View" tab.
4. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known types".
5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

now you should be able to see the extension...

Honestly the person who shot the pictures should realise the comfort level of those they give them to..that "photographer" should have converted them down for you.

If that "photographer" won't convert them down, there are several freeware ones that will ..for the MAC look for RAWker..on Windows there is Able Rawer, DCRAW among others

At that resolution it shouldn't matter with the digital frame. The only issue you'd have is that it would take up to much memory. For my parents digital frame I put the images on an SD card and they use that.

For email, you really will be able to only send 1 or 2 at a time because of bandwith limits.

You can do a few things. Use a photo editor and there should be an option under File that would say Save for Web. This option will save it as a smaller file size for easier emailing. I would save it as a different name, either adding a "1" or "a" for "web" after the file name so you don't lose the original.

You can also upload them to a photo hosting site like photobucket or smugmug or zenfolio or something like that. This way you can share more pictures at once and just email the link to the gallery.

Thanks! I am printing this out and showing it to my DH. I also sent the link to the thread to my DD. Hopefully, they can help me. It is so frustrating having these beautiful pictures and not being able to do much with them. However, I am very appreciative of my friends for taking them.
