High Cost of Easter

I put a lot of goodies in the baskets ( depends on boys/girls but items like toys, cards, books, barettes, lip gloss, cologne sets, ect) I make, not so many treats (but some candy, gum, fruit snacks, and Slim Jims). :goodvibes

Baskets I made (8 total):

DS 80
DH 40
Nephews X3 25 each so 75
Nieces X2 30 each so 60
Nephews Girlfriend 7 (all candy, no "goodies", I just felt bad not doing anything for her)
Also ~ MIL flowers and vase 20

Grand total - $282.00! :scared1:

Last Easter we were at WDW, no baskets or candy. It worked out well for us as dd13 was still testing (falsely) positive for peanut allergy.

This year we've got lots of candy!!!!!!!!------bag of peanut M&Ms, bag of regular M&Ms, two bags of mini Reese's pb cups, one Dove bunny per kid (3), two various candy eggs per kid. All candy free courtesy of Proctor & Gamble and the lovely lovely Walgreens Register Rewards!-----$0

Baskets, plastic eggs, and yucky plastic grass are reused every year (I wash out the eggs)----$0

Other basket items----pencils, erasers, mini notebooks, foam airplanes, also free from Walgreens----$0

Breakfast and dinner items are from regular grocery budget (my parents got the ham)---on sale eggs, bacon I stocked up on for $1/lb at Christmas, cinnamon rolls from major sale plus coupons last week, sale strawberries and potatoes for dinner, scratch shortcake biscuits, sale asparagus. Dh brewed a batch of beer this winter that we will enjoy for the first time today (cost comes under hobbies).

I did have to buy a new dress and shoes for dd13 but she will wear it all spring and summer for church. She cantored (lead the congretation in song) at Mass this morning and looked beautiful. She will continue to look beautiful in that very same outfit when she cantors twice monthly! And I can also wear the spectator pumps we found at DSW yesterday :)

DsAlmost15 wore school clothes---khakis, blazer, shirt and tie.

Dd8 wore a dress put away from her older sister and last year's white church shoes. Her feet have barely grown since June.

Hmmm..

I probably spent about $30 each on toys and books for each of our two kids, plus another $5 each for a small chocolate bunny, $1 basket and some paper grass.

I would rather give them some extra toys/books than more candy.

Dd got some Littlest Pet Shop stuff and ds got a bubble lawn mower along w/ some Thomas the Tank Engine trains. They both got books and Viewmaster discs. Dd got barrettes and hair bands and ds got a Thomas toothbrush and toothpaste. Nothing huge.

I spent about another $10 for some plastic eggs and stickers to put in them.

Foodwise.. we are eating a ham, mashed potatoes and baby carrots for dinner along w/ some gorgeous artichokes. My family is visiting for a week so we probably would have had a large meal today anyway, even if it wasn't Easter Sunday. For breakfast we had french toast! ...very yummy!

We always use the same basket. My mom even has "our" baskets and when we are "home" for Easter she fills them still. :)

DS(5) = $25.00
Kite $11
webkinz $7
teddy grahams $1
some german cookies $1
gum $.50
net $4
some lose candy, like a few starburst, etc. $1

DD(7) = $28.00
Webkinz $7
Enchanted $15
gum $.50
teddy grahams $1
german cookies $1
net $4

I guess about $50? Yikes...

I'm hosting Easter Dinner for friends and I bought the ham, the potatoes, the tea/milk, etc so about $40 for all that.

I also did the Easter Egg hunt for the neighbors so about $10 for that too.

A few years back my DH worked with some guys from Norway or Denmark (don't remember which) and they shared with my DH that they have a Santa Claus Day which is separate from the holy day of Christmas. That started us thinking along those lines and we have started opening baskets and coloring eggs, etc. on the day before Easter so as not to have the younger kids thinking that Easter Day itself is all about bunnies and not the resurrection. Just our preference and the kids seem to enjoy it that way. Also, I have found my Easter Day to be less stressful without trying to open baskets before church--which is how we previously did things. Also, they aren't so full of candy that they don't want the meal that I worked so hard to put before them!;)

I have six sons and we still do baskets even for the 21 year old. For the four older sons the centerpiece of the basket was a Starbucks bottled frappuccino. (That was $1 each). The older four also got a Toblerone chocolate bar each on sale for $2 a bar. Then there were eggs filled with jelly beans, m&m's, reese's pieces eggs, malted eggs, etc. I probably spend $12 on the loose bags of candy that I put into the eggs. Already had the baskets. $2 for grass. $6 for plastic to cover the baskets. Had the ribbon to tie the bags. Little boys' baskets were anchored with some Crayola clay-stuff. ($3 each) They each got a Lindt chocolate bunny on sale for $2.50 per bunny. They got all the eggs stuffed with candy, as well. I just remembered they each (all boys) got 2 reese's peanut butter eggs which was another $5 total. Eggs and coloring kits were $5. $3 plastic eggs. No new clothes. Easter dinner was probably $15 more than I usually spend on dinner. We were probably out $65 or so for Easter this year which I guess isn't too bad for the eight of us.

$100 for two new dresses for DDs 4 & 12.
my mom bought them purses $49 and nylons $14
$270 brunch out at restaurant luckily my parents paid
$20 new top and skirt on clearance for me
$72 for mani/pedi for DD12 and Pedi for me
parents have been staying with us since Friday so they treated to some meals out since they stay with us. $20 lunch friday. $60 dinner saturday.
$140 dinner friday.
$60 bike for DD4
$70 bike for DD12
$30 movie and cd
$30 little einsteins rocket
$30 candy, buckets, misc for buckets

So grand total I spent $412 plus my parents spent $560 expensive weekend:scared1:

I spent about $40 on the two baskets/candy/small gifts/dye and $4 to their school for their egg hunt.

We don't do big time baskets. So Russ' was just:

$2.50 for a silly toy with jelly beans
$1.00 for bag of chocolates
$1.00 for a chocolate bunny
$17.00 for "Here Comes the 123s" CD/DVD (mainly because Mommy wanted it ;) )
Basket and grass were reused and free, so less than $25 for the whole thing.

I spent $80 on mix-and-match shirts, shorts, socks and hat at Gymboree and made him wear the nicest ones of the bunch. Everything else can be worn all summer. And I made him wear shorts even though it's 40 degrees out. :rolleyes1

I spent less than $40 on Easter this year including items to make gift bags for my religion class of 12 kids. The most expensive thing I bought was a webkinz for ds. We don't do special outfits here since it's just ds and no one on either side of the family cares. LOL! We don't really do much on Easter Sunday honestly. We did have a big BBQ at my mom's yesterday but I used meat we already had like chix and pork chops. I was able to clean out my fridge and freezer plus I have enough leftovers for a couple of days. No cooking for me! :cool1:

Payment for my sins when He died on the cross - priceless!!!!

Well said!!!!

My daughter doesn't like candy. She would rather have an apple than a hershey bar. So I do get her things like art supplies, gel pens, a journal,or stuffed bunny.

But this year My DD just couldn't figure out how the Easter bunny got her the exact 2 pairs of flip flops she wanted from disneyshopping this year. :rotfl:

let's see......

a night at the museum dvd for $10
1 bag m&ms $2
1 bag chocolate $2
peanut butter cup eggs $2
jelly beans $2

$18 divided by 2 baskets = $9 ea.

both girls were able to wear their dresses from last year, older dd needed new shoes - $5 at walmart, other dd was able to wear her ds old shoes that were still in good shape.....

When we were kids we used the same basket each year. On the night before Easter we would leave out Easter Baskets (with grass and cellophane) out and when the Easter Bunny arrived he would fill the basket.

That is how I did it growing up and so did DH. I can't imagine what the heck you would do with all those old baskets every year! Heck, I had seven siblings--could you even imagine??

I realized upon my kids finding their baskets that they hardly got any candy. I usually do some little gifts, which I did this year too, because I would rather cut down on the candy, but they really don't have a lot of it in there. Oh well. They have all been spending money on candy lately anyway!

DH spent $45 on his kids Easter gifts ages 15&14
I gave my mom $30.oo towards Easter dinner at her house

2 egg kits= 0 personal expense because the daycare children dyed eggs as an activity

Grand total just about $350. a lot ,but not bad for 4 kids, and dinner for a family of 6. I just prefer to give my kids books, and activities that foster their imagination , even in if it is Mario Party 8, at least they are using their brains to play it. I do buy some candy but I would rather spend more money on gifts then candy- just my personal choice.:thumbsup2

Okay, this Easter was way different for us! The kids are all grown up now...until we moved to our new house last year I was still doing Easter baskets for the 4 grown kids, plus the spouses, plus the 4 grandkids...but since we moved and I can't even get AT the Easter baskets cuz they're in the shed behind a mound of snow...anyway, most of them were out of town this year so I spent about $6 in candy to have around the house (it was the only "dessert" we had for Easter dinner) including $2.19 for a little plastic toy filled with M&Ms for the 22 yr old daughter who has been staying with us (temporarily...)

The $162 for groceries I spent yesterday didn't count, right??? Except maybe for the ham, the frozen roll dough, gravy mix, and frozen corn...the other stuff was just stuff we'd pretty much normally buy.

Now if I could just get the REST of my spending down...!!:)

I filled my 2 DS's baskets for $45. Really cut down from past years. They had a great day!! :thumbsup2

DD15 and DS12 each were given $15.00 to help pay for something they wanted. We did not decorate for the extra time was priceless for me. They both wore clothes that were already in their closests. Dinner was food I would have purchased normally. My kids do not usually eat candy/chocolate often but I went to the local candy shop (sorry I am a chocolate snob and they have the best chocolate) for $26.00 they got 1 small box of flats, one hollow small soccer ball, one small hockey puck, one white chocolate bunny (very small), 4 butter eggs, 2 molasses suckers, 1/4#sponge candy, and one small bag of jelly beans. So Easter was $56.00 and they will bring any leftover candy to school on Tuesday to share and it will be out of the house then and gone.

Just a quick peek at the kids' baskets as they found them this morning......they are for DS 10, DS 6, and DD 3.5....

And I have to add that my six year old's FAVORITE item was a dinosaur pop-up book I found at Dollar Tree. I wish he would stay that easy to please forever.....
