Hidden Gotcha's

No real gotchas for us when we bought a couple of years ago thanks to the help of people on the DIS. :thumbsup2

People need to remeber that DVC is a luxury item and with it comes additional expense.

Sure you can save money on accomendations and possibly make more trips, but with extra trips come extra expenses for tickets, transportation, etc.

We play the DVC game (not staying on Fri's and Sat's, going during non-peak times, etc), using the discounts and we have made 200 pts strecth a great deal.

I don't regret DVC for one second, but again, do your homework.

I've found some hidden BENEFITS of DVC Ownership!

1) It has forced DW and I to take vacations, many vacations in fact! As two self-employed professionals, we have been too busy, or forgotten to take vacations for spans of 5+ years, prior to the DVC!

2) Amazing memories. When my then 4 y.o. DD met Cinderella for the first time, or Pooh payed special attention to my DS then age 8.

3) Renting Points. A whole new adventure in and of its self. Many new friends, much learning, even referrals bonuses!

4) Becoming more of a Disney 'Expert', learning so much from the DISboards family, easily 'doubling' the value of my carefully planned, but no longer commando-style vacations.

5) Rinkwide, a definite bonus and awesome DVC perk.

However, just because the word Fair is the root of Tag Fairy, doen't mean the tag fairy is fair. She/He/It is a politically correct mythical creature. Rinkwide has a better chance of winning a week's vacation at cindy's castle than getting a complementary tag.

Further, as self-appointed membership director of the RINKWIDE FAN CLUB, (Secret word is COWBELL), I'd like to anounce a twofer.

All new memberships in the Rinkwide Fan Club (RFC) currently get a free membership in the Doctor Tomorrow fan club as well. There is no higher compliment that this: "These two dudes are most excellent!!!"

Enjoy the DVC, and ignore the flakes (like me!)

Sincerely,

-Tony

And these are some of the exact reasons that we are planning now to buy in. We have made an offer on a resale contract of 100 points at HHI. Since DH is not a huge amusement park fan but loves all things outdoors we figured we could see ourselves going ot HHI for longer than WDW but who knows. :)

1) It has forced DW and I to take vacations, many vacations in fact! As two self-employed professionals, we have been too busy, or forgotten to take vacations for spans of 5+ years, prior to the DVC!

We took our first ever Family Vacation that didn't involve an event for the extended family to WDW in June. Our kids are 7,11, and 14. Having the points to use will force us to think about going somewhere and doing something at least every other year. :goodvibes

2) Amazing memories. When my then 4 y.o. DD met Cinderella for the first time, or Pooh payed special attention to my DS then age 8.

Which would you rather have while sitting around in a chair in your old age, a huge bank account or amazing memories? :happytv:

3) Renting Points. A whole new adventure in and of its self. Many new friends, much learning, even referrals bonuses!

Not planning on this for awhile since we are going to start with 100 points

4) Becoming more of a Disney 'Expert', learning so much from the DISboards family, easily 'doubling' the value of my carefully planned, but no longer commando-style vacations.

After the last trip I definitely like the idea of more relaxed vacations knowing if we don't do it all see it all there will always be a next time.

And while I am just now becoming aware of rinkwide I can appreciate his humor and find myself reading all of his comments.

Thank you for the high compliment debloco!

I don't consider myself of the calibre of Dr. Tomorrow or Rinkwide, more of a wannabee.

However, congrats, you are the FIRST threefer member of the:

Rinkwide
Dr. Tomorrow, and
greenban fanclubs

Dues (payable in DVC Points of course) may be transferred to me at your earliest convience!

Thanks for the complement!

-Tony

PS: Doesn't Kelly Jo rock?

Debloco.....My thoughts EXACTLY!!! I do believe greenban is on their level. So, I too, want to be in the threefer fan club. But.................... I'm not officially a DVC member yet. I'm hovering somewhere in Estoppel land (but I did pass ROFR yeah! So, if I am accepted into this highly-regarded fan club....greenban, my dues will be in the mail.

Absolutely! ::yes::

Hate to rain on the parade, but remember, this is a DVC discussion board, not a fan club board. Posting directly to specific users, or using the boards as a personal chat medium, is a violation of posting rules.

Use PM's to respond directly to another poster, and not the board itself.

This is not a DVC-Community board, it's a DVC-Operations board. If anyone has any questions as to appropriate topics, check the board definitions at the top of each board.

Please stay on topic.

IMHO, the biggest "gotcha" is the belief that DVC will save you money. That is true ONLY for those who continue to travel in exactly the same pattern as they did before their DVC purchase. That is NOT a very large group - for sure, it's not very representative of those who post here, LOL.

Most end up going more often, staying longer, upgrading their accomodations, inviting friends and family along as guests or using their points to book a cruise or other non-DVC option. Nothing wrong with any of those things, but those who do them spend MORE $$ on vacations than they did pre-DVC.

In spite of all the testimonials you may read on these boards, DVC does not save money for most people - me included! :teeth:

Best wishes -

Despite all of that increased spending, the ultimate value of DVC remains. And value is where DVD's marketing should be focused but I'm sure "money savings" registered better in their focus groups.
