Thought I would give this little report from Disney during the hurricane. We are at the Beach Club Villas and have been here since Saturday. Thursday and Friday we stayed at Dixie Landings. There didn't seem to be anyone at Dixie Landings (Port Orleans), either one of those days, even though we were told that they were capacity. No one in the pools, walking around, and the food courts were the emptiest I have ever seen them. The parks were empty also, as no waits on the most popular rides in Magic Kingdom. That was Friday of course, as Saturday all parks were closed. At the Beach Club, Cape May was open but Beaches and Cream closed at 3. The store stayed open all day. I took a walk to Boardwalk in the afternoon, and nothing was open there. I have never seen the boardwalk empty with only a couple of people walking on it. They did kick us out of the pool at 6 pm and we sat around waiting for the storm to come the rest of the night. They wouldn't let us out of the villas the rest of the night.
Today, is Sunday and the rains have started to come. It is a bit windy and will probably get worse as the day goes on. There is nothing open here, and we are, again, kept in our areas. They have games set up in the breezeway and common rooms. They are selling box lunches for 5 dollars, and have soda set up for mug holders. They say they can't keep everyone in the area, but if we insist on leaving, they will call over to the main lobby and let them know we are coming so they can unlock the doors. Sounds scarey!
Now for the big questions. People are starting to ask about being charged for their rooms, when they aren't letting anyone on the roads. One woman belonging to the Vacation Club was told she had to borrow points to stay for an extra couple of days. Now she has to stay two more, and doesn't know where she is going to get the money. There are other people in the same boat. One couple was told they would only charge her 199 a night for a room. That was being questioned also, because what else are they going to do with the rooms? No one is coming in right now, so the rooms will be empty anyway. We figured that disney needed some rooms for the cast members that were there working and couldn't get home. I know that some of them will have to be here until Monday, and have been here all weekend. The room we had a Dixie has not been filled yet and that has been two days ago. People are getting different answers, which tells me that Disney hasn't had a chance to think about this type of emergency. Some people were also put out about having to pay 5 dollars for these box lunches. We shall see if Disney thinks they should make changes in the future for situations like this.
Anyway, we know we are safe, and will probably have power when things get tough. We are scheduled to check out on Monday. Hope the storm is over by then.

In addition to housing the guests who were already at the Disney resorts, the rooms at various resorts are being used to house people who were staying at Fort Wilderness, guests evacuated from the Disney Vero Beach resort, cast members who work through the hurricane and can't go home, cast members on the hurricane recovery team and cast members who were evacuated from Castaway Cay. Also, many cast members whose homes are uninhabitable due to hurricane Charley are also staying in rooms on property.

So the resorts have surprisingly higher occupancy right now than they normally would.

Thank you for the update it's made for intresting reading.Disney's rates can be high(I know from many stays) however people had a choice and were well informed about Frances's dangerous potential beforehand. They could have gone to cheaper hotel i.e.(Holiday Inn or Comort Inn)or even a Public shelter.Disney is under no obligation unless your on a Food plan to feed any of their guests.A modest $5 dollar charge for a box lunch isn't high when compared to charging $2.50 for a plain bagel as they usually charge.I heard the GF was full on Fox News this morning so the resorts especially the deluxes must be full.

Thanks for the update. At least Disney dropped the box lunches to $5.00. That is pretty cheap when you compare it to their normal food pricing. Also, can you imagine what their revenue loss is just by having the parks closed for one day.

I heard on the news that the 4 Disney parks, 2 Universal parks and Sea World suffered a loss of $41 million because of the closures. :(

We were there this weekend and my biggest complaint with Disney is that there just didn't seem to be any sort of standard operating practice for the YC/BC/BCV's resort. I just don't see why they don't have an emergency plan worked out. We live in a time when the threat of terrorism is high and Disney has been mentioned as a possible target. I can't imagine what would happen there if they were victims of a terrorist attack.

I agree that different guests got different answers. Actually, you could ask the same question to two different CM's and get totally different answers.

Also, considering that guests were not receiving housekeeping for 2 days, I think $5.00 per sandwich is sort of lame. I read online that the Boardwalk gave out complimentary food during Charley and people were greedy and took extra's and some guests were left with nothing. So I guess they figure charging something lessens the amount of greed. However, Y/B only charged $3.00 for their box sandwiches during Charley. I would hate to think they felt they could make more money on them....

It was a bad situation and I honestly believe Disney needs to have a better emergency plan inacted. I can't believe they don't have one in place already and shame on them if they don't. However, after what I witnessed this weekend, it doesn't appear so.

I can only imagine some of the situations people found themselves in.

It was honestly the way I never want to end a vacation again, I can tell you that much.:)

We (myself and DD age 8) were at the POFQ until this morning (when I scored 2 seats on a flight home). We were very thankful
to be there and not sleeping on the floor of a public shelter.

Everyone was wonderful to us. We had to extend the stay twice.
The first time they moved us to a waterview room (since our
room was planned for FW relocations). I know the FQ was full
(we had cast members, a lot of FW relocations, those of us stranded, and some people from Vero beach). We were charged $74 per night for the room. I never expected to stay for free
(we were using their utilities etc). They also provided UPH tickets to make up for Saturday and Sunday (I had UPH tickets as part of my package).

Saturday (until 4:30 pm) there were characters in the food court.
The food court was serving a limited menu (but it was about 75%
of the normal offerings). At that point we were instructed to stay
in our rooms (where we had to stay until 6:00 pm on Sunday).
We had been warned to buy food in case we had to stay in the
rooms (upto 48 hours).

Some people did not take the warning seriously. My DD and I had
bread, bagles, nacho cheese dip (it works for sandwiches), cookies, breakfast cerael, milk, water, and a 2 liter bottle of soda.
At least 1 family seemed to be living off Snickers bars from the vending machines. The food court was selling "family packs" for $24 (I think it was fruit, pop tarts, bread, etc) before the storm.

The resort provided us a flashlight just in case (My sister bought us a lightsaber flashlight before she left for home!). We never lost power or water.

During the 26 hours in the room, the resort TV showed Disney
movies (Finding Nemo, Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, etc). The
front desk provided several updates via the voicemail system.

We did not have housekeeping Saturday or Sunday. Yesterday
they changed out all the towels and emptied the trash. (I had already made the beds).

On Friday night/Sat am at 2 am my DD was ill (I think all stress of missing the first day of school, the storm, etc caught up to her).
I called housekeeping for a fresh set of sheets, blanket, pillows, and towels. They were delivered within 20 minutes. The cast member asked if we were okay or needed any help (medical
attention or clean-up).

Since my DH is a CM at that resort, I thought I would respond to this. Some things are universal. There are certain statements and Q&As that are issued to CMs to tell guests when they come up. However, you have to realize that the resort departments are very focused and compartmentalized. It may not seem that way to you, but if you ask a question to a lifeguard and then ask someone working at the front desk, you're likely to get drastically different answers simply because their jobs are very different, so the information passed on to them is different, based on what they "need to know". Especially in an emergency situation, CMs are given a certain set of tasks or responsibilities, and they may not know things outside of that subset of information.

That said, I'm sorry you had such a frustrating end to your vacation. Don't let it stop you from coming back go visit again!

It would take Disney being blown (heaven forbid), for us not to go back there. We have been DVC members for 5 years, and have been going there yearly, until we moved down here, for the last 10 years. That being said, I know the difference between apples and oranges. Asking people with different jobs, you will get different answers. We would ask people with the same jobs and get the different answers. I compare it to calling the airlines and having one person try to charge you for switching your reservation and another not (which is what happened after Frances). I only attribute this to the company being so big thta information does not get absorbed by everybody. Our problems were worked out, as usual by disney, and we had a good a stay as can be expected. Your husband is lucky to be working there. What does he do may I ask? My wife wanted to work for Disney when we moved down here, but wasn't sure it would work financially after gas and the tolls.

After people took more than one meal during Charley, they more than likely charged to prevent greed. You know one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. $5 is not much think of the food & labor that went into these. Also most hotels on the coast line just shut down, period. Bye Bye. So I thnk that most places think they have a plan, then it happens & maybe they do not have the resourses or staff to follow the plan.

was nothing less than amazing... disney cast members are the most accomodating and pleasant people on the planet... they went out of their way and bent over backwards (sometimes literally!) to assist guests during the hurricane...

we had two rooms at pop century... we were forewarned of the potential for danger... encouraged constantly to have supplies (ie. food/water)... received numerous letters and voicemails... kept entertained in person or on television... and were made to feel safe, secure and comfortable!

starting thursday night we were encouraged to stock up... friday night "everything pop" (gift shop/food court) stayed open overnight (mostly for those travelers evacuating from other places/seeking refuge at pop) and on saturday afternoon they were giving away (yep, i said GIVING! LOL!) five pound bags of ice! (of course they were selling the coolers!)

as far as meals went... typically a bottle of water goes for $2.50, but during HF a "meal bag" went for $5 and contained the same size bottle of water, two uncrustable sandwiches (pb&j, come frozen), two granola bars, a bag of chips (medium sized) and two boxes of raisins... which i don't think was a bad deal... we got them for the kids... for dh and i we went for the small plastic containers of veggies/cheese/grapes and a chef salad... for breakfast we bought some bagels (blech! a new yorker needs to teach a bagel baking class!) and cream cheese, pop tarts and some other snacky stuff...

we were only "confined" for about 24 hours and made sure to have a decent/hot food court meal just before it closed (4pm saturday) and ate again when it reopened sunday at 5pm...

as far as keeping us entertained... well, suffice to say, the kids were not bored... between the movies in the room when we were asked to stay inside, plus, when we were able to leave our room they found plenty to do at the arcade or in the lobby (beach ball volleyball, constant character visits, bowling, arts/crafts, etc) as well as swimming in the pool (when it was safe)... also, the mousekeepers did a great job of teaching guests how to make towel animals! LOL! also, while they did not clean/make up the rooms on saturday, they did go room to room leaving clean towels and removing dirty ones... which was more than i expected...

in addition, i was pleased that when our airline forced us to stay an extra night (most airlines flew out monday, southwest did not start flying 'til tuesday) we were only charged the $49/night rate, which was a nice surprise (being a cynic, i naturally assumed they would gouge us for the $77 rack rate, which really, they were entitled to do)... and we were given uph's for the days the parks were closed, encouraging me to start planning another trip (although i wish they expired sooner... 20 years is just toooo long! LOL!)

so, all in all, the disney hurricane adventure package was well received by us!

Well, we are going this Saturday, staying at the SOG.

If the current Track holds it will be Tuesday morning when Ivan the Terrible gets there. Hopefully, their tracking is off the mark, I can not believe Florida might get three Hurricanes in one month, that is crazy.
