Hi DIS Scrappers! Newbie here with ???s...

Have any of you ever scrapped a cookbook? My mom passed away this past year and I just recently got the thought that I should preserve/scrap her recipes for my 2 grown girls. I am totally stuck for ideas. Can anybody help me get started? TIA

the best place to start is www.twopeasinabucket.com

on the lower right hand corner is the peanut gallery, click on that. in the green bar on the top of the page click on search gallery. in "where title contains" type recipe. You'll get lots of ideas there.
I would also suggest typing some but then scanning a few recipes and printing them on cardstock, that way the girls will have some recipes in your mom's handwriting. And you could add some stories to the pages about a special moment you had with your mom while cooking.

I'm just getting ready to start one each for my two boys. I'm going to type the recipes (as my writing is not good!) but add the commetns about where they cam from, and caption the photos in my own writing. I've actually been taking pics of finished and in preparation dishes (when I remember) since last Christmas when I started scrapping I've got quite small (CM 7x7) albums (yeah, special offer :roll eyes: ) so I'll only have one photo, or at the most two, per spread. I'm also taking photos if the boys help me (eg with fairy cakes) so they can feature as well!

its quite hard finding embellishments over here with a cooking theme, but I've found a few, and I've got some paper like a watermelon and some with apples. Other than that I'm gong for "homestyle" papers (e.g. checks, stripes). And of course page protectors!

I'll second twopeas they are great. Sometime Michaels will have a receipe scrapbook that they sell. My friend has bought a couple of them over the years to give to family members as gift with her grandmother receipes in them.

That would be so kind! But I know it costs a bunch to post them and even more to cash a cheque (wonder where all my dollars went ). If you find stuff in your stash that you can't use and can fit in an ordinary envelope they would be gratefully received, but my swap stuff cost $10 to post and I only had one resort in there so I'll just have to keep an eye out here. there are more stores opening up slowly, so by the time I get round to actually starting I should be OK

Have you checked Walmart? Our Walmarts have an excellent selection of cooking related items including scrapbooks, recipe cards, and embellishments. If nothing else, it might help give you ideas.

Don't know why I didn't think of searching on twopeas - lots of good ideas there. Now I need to stop browsing and get to work!

I checked Michael's for a kit and they didn't have anything. Hobby Lobby has one, but I think I'd rather do my own thing. I've decided to make each page different (instead of using a theme) and matching it to the recipe ingredients, photo or journaling.

My biggest problem now is the actual album to put them in. I really want to use a 3 ring binder and make 8.5x11 pages, placed in page protecters to keep the splatters off. Has anybody ever altered a notebook or album? Most of them are slick vinyl so not sure if any adhesive or tape would work and I've never tried ModPodge so don't know about it either. Anything else? Don't want to make pretty recipe pages and then stick them in a plain ole school binder!

B&MissB - Oooh, I really like the idea of adding some of Mom's own handwriting. I've been frantically typing away and hadn't thought of that. Now if I can just find a few that aren't TOO yellow, splattered or torn!

I would copy them as is onto cardstock. It all adds to the charm of the book. I made a recipe card for a swap and used a glass and ink pad to make a fake wine stain.

as for the binder I'm not sure what you could put on it, mod podge might work maybe take some fine sandpaper and rub it on the binder to get the paper to stick. also ACMoore has some vintage kitchen rub ons that might work too.

I have to agree about copying the yellow, stained ones as is. I did recipe albums for my sisters last year and had recipes as far back as my great great aunt.

Mine was a photo album as well, so each page had a typed recipe, a photo and some kind of embellishment on it. But my favorite "embellishments" were the scanned recipes in the person's own hand! It was still on there typed so you could read it, but it really added something!

Honestly, the more stained the recipe the more someone used it! That means it must be good!

I have never done a recipe book before, but I would love to do that with some of my grandmother's recipes. I second what Buffy said about the handwriting. DH & I were cleaning out a room not too long ago, and I found a folder from college that had some letters folded in envelopes that my grandmother had written me. She was sick with leukemia my senior year of HS and my freshman year of college. . .in the letters, she talks about being "worried" about me being away from home at college, and how she would hope she felt well enough every Sunday/Monday to write me letters so they would get there by Friday. She passed away in February of my freshman year, and finding those letters this past winter (11 years later) was wonderful. I hope to get them safely put into a scrapbook!

Ok, little OT teary story there, but with the goal of making the point of how wonderful having the handwriting actually is!!

I have decorated the outside of a regular binder before. I did whatever I wanted to do in terms of scrapbook paper, stickers, whatever, then I covered the whole thing with contact paper. But I realize that has a certain "look" to it which you may not like. I would imagine that modge podge would work as well.

I don't cook well at all, but I won't throw out any of my mom's old recipe cards for just the reason stated above - they're all in her handwriting.

I've altered albums many times years ago. But I wouldn't want them in the kitchen (i.e. usable) because I covered them with fabric. Remember the padded photo albums? I did lots of those, including ring binders for class notes etc.

I like my recipes to be on small cards when I'm cooking, not in books. Counter space is at a premium. Besides, cards can be "stuck" on a cabinet door if you get creative. I like the albums to look at.

WOW, you guys have given me a LOT to think about! I'm still mulling things around in my head, but can't come up with a definite plan...Ugh!

Many of the recipes in this book were my great-grandmother's so they are very old and fragile. Some just crumble. Many are out-dated things we wouldn't cook or eat today. (Can't picture my two girls stewing a rabbit. They won't even cut up a whole chicken! In fact, I don't think they are aware that there is more to the chicken than the boneless, skinless breast! ) So I will use your suggestion and scan some of those recipes and use them as embellishments so we keep the history and the handwriting.

I really do want a 8.5x11 ring binder so that we can easily add to it later. Found directions on line to alter an Avery binder using Mod Podge. Does anybody know if the MP will yellow with age? I'm thinking I'll give it a try tomorrow & see what happens. I'll post back here with results.
