We were in HH from 4/30-5/6. To save on points we spent the first 2 nights at the Crowne Plaza in the Shipyard plantation down the street, so to speak.

I just wanted to share that we were very happy with our 4 nights in our 1 bedroom DVC accommodations. We did not get our location request, but I figure that is due to our short (4 night) stay. We were in bldg. 30, one of the 1 bedrooms under a grand villa. I know the people above aren't trying to stomp, but that's sure what it sounds like! It only really bothered us on one late night and a couple early mornings.

Our room was in great shape, except for some wear and tear on the pots and pans. My DH rented a bike and did the kayaking tour through Broad Creek rentals and thoroughly enjoyed both.

We love the beach (have a place in OC, MD) and HH's beach is massive and beautiful. The water was so warm! I prefer the softer sand at home, but HH's beaches are great for bike riding and my DH did still manage to create some castles in the sand. We also took the short ride to Beaufort, SC and took a carriage ride around the historic district. Very interesting and enjoyable.

We ate at Redfish, Low Country Backyard, British Open Pub and HH Prime Steakhouse (with a living social deal). We went to the early dinner special at Redfish...what a deal! Less than $30 for 2 including two apps, two entrées and two glasses of wine. The food was fantastic and the service was too. Low Country Backyard is also very close to the resort and we thought going later in the evening would make for a shorter wait. But, it is a tiny place and when we arrived at 8PM we still had a half hour wait. Thank goodness we were sat outside...the ambiance is so much nicer. The food was very good, high marks for the fried green tomatoes. DH had the shrimp and grits which were good, but too rich to finish in one meal. I ordered the daily fish special, only to have our server return and tell me it had just sold out. On her recommendation, I ordered the crabcakes. They were ok, but nothing like Maryland crabcakes. HH Prime in the oceanfront Hilton was fine, but nothing special. It was neat to see the hotel and grounds and be able to compare it to Disney. (I did get my surf and turf here. Yum!)

This was our 2nd trip here and the island is so beautiful and the resort and its staff so nice I am almost tempted to buy points here. But for now, we are content with my DH's family vacation home in Ocean City, MD. Its in north Ocean City, on the beach and he's been living there, spending summers there, or every weekend and some vacation weeks there since 1968. Hilton Head is different and beautiful, but once every 3-5 years will suffice for now.

Thanks for the report. We spend 2 night there in March and LOVED it! We drove to Savannah for a day trip to tour the Girl Scout Headquaters (DD is a Brownie) and ate at Paula Dean;s restaurant, The Lady and Sons. It was fun....hoping to go back and spend more time on the :beach: Hilton Head beach

Thanks so much for the report. I'm a big fan of HHI. We were there a week before you, and my mouth is still watering from the entree salad I had at British Open Pub. I hope you enjoyed it! I was interested in your 1 BR-any view pictures? We've stayed in a 1 BR there 8 times, but never gotten that one. Unfortunately we chose a studio for this last trip-I guess I'm one spoiled HHI DVCer-only 1 BRs there from now on.
Where exactly was Low Country Backyard? Is that the one Gordon in the mercantile recommended to DH? Gordon knows his food, and he recommended a resturant to DH-then, unfortunately, DH forgot the name! Last time we were there, Gordon recommended Roastfish and Cornbread and he was right on with that one. But now the word's gottenout-it was way too crowded when we went in April.

So glad to read your report! We leave for HHI in 2 weeks! We are from Maryland, grew up going to OC, MD, and am curious as to how I will compare between the two. Is the water any " greener" than at OC? Waves? Any jellyfish?

I already know that no matter what type of Seafood we eat it won't taste like the way we eat it in Maryland! Maryland seafood rocks. I'm not even going to bother with a crab cake!;)

Did you drive to the beach? Take any tours?

We also have a place in north OC (bayside)-and have taken two trips to HH. The water is much calmer and warmer (we spent a week in late June and mid September). I also prefer our soft sand, but it's great to just get in the water and not worry about being clobbered by huge waves. We drove to the beach, but the shuttle seems very convenient. The seafood is good-we liked the grouper and red snapper. If you like bar-b-que, One Hot Mama's was very good. Have a great stay-you will love HHI!

Although I'm not the OP, I can tell you about the jellyfish. We were there 2 weeks ago, and saw lots of jellyfish (I forget what kind they're called) both in the water and on the beach. However, they don't sting. The stinging ones, from what I understand, show up around August.

I heard! I am hoping they will have moved on by the 29th! Still debating whether to rent bikes. I do want to do the tours around the lodge. I wonder if there are any golf lessons at the lodge? Also I'm leaning towards a dolphin cruise.

Going to HHI for the first time in late October. Any suggestions on where to eat, what to do, etc will be appreciated. No children this trip, just DW (48) and I (56).

What kind of food do you like? Seafood, American, Mexican? Like nature-we also travel sans kids-a little older than you and kids grown and out on their own. We love to stroll at Fish Haul Creek Park, Sea Pines Forest Preserve, and Pinckney Island for nature. A day trip out to Harbourtown to stroll the shops and see the boats is fun too. I'd be happy to give some recommendations for meals if you tell me more. The front desk is super about recommendations too.
And be sure you ask Gordon in the Mercantile-he knows his food!

Thanks for the pics! We are in a studio as well. I requested Marsh view. Looks like you had a wonderful view. That porch looks great. I need to remember to bring my chair pads!:goodvibes

We have been to Disney's HHI Resort twice. This first time we were in a studio and we loved it. The next time we were in a 2 BR. We loved that too. Here are some pics of the studio. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks so much for the post! Can't wait to try some of the restaurants.
Question: How bad are the stinging jelly fish in August? We'll be there the 14th-19th. Is it swimmable? We usually go as far up as the chest only. We live inland so we have no idea what to expect. Thanks so much!

Thx Simba's Mom for the suggestions. As for what we like to eat....food! :lmao: Seriously, DW and I will try anything and like most everything. We are just as happy at V&A as we are at Flaming Tree BBQ. Whatever is in season; whatever strikes the mood; whenever we can get reservations if required; and whatever is reasonably priced. On the price part, to us V&A is reasonably priced for the service and quality of food but so is Flaming Tree BBQ. We just don't want to pay V&A prices for a Flaming Tree BBQ meal! :scared1:

We like the above mentioned British Open Pub, Sea Shack (VERY casual, that's part of the charm), Captain Woody's, Roastfish and Cornbread, Signe's bakery, Salty Dog (touristy, but nice views). We haven't yet gotten to, but heard good things about Main Street Cafe, Boathouse II, and Flamingo's Donuts. And someday when we're feeling real dressy, Old Fort Pub.

Glad to see HH has lots of fans out there. No, I don't have any pictures of our view, mainly because we forgot our camera and all my pictures are cell phone pics and not the best quality. That said we didn't really have a view, building 30 is at the far end of the resort from the main building (near where the kayaks launch) and our view was of "interior" of the resort, basically the greenery and other buildings.

We tried Low Country Backyard based on its tripadvisor #1 rating. Its located in a little shopping center not far from the resort...our GPS did point us in the right direction. I remember its next to a larger restaurant off Palmetto Bay Rd.

The ocean is far more calm than O.C. MD. My husband is a surfer and on one day he joked that the waves were just big enough for Barbie (the doll) to catch a wave. The water is warm though; felt like September temps to us! I was surprised not more people went in the ocean. Yes there were jellyfish, but they were a non-stinging kind. There were plenty of dead ones on the beach close to the ocean, which was both kind of sad and kind of gross. I went in the water and never encountered one in the ocean.

The weather was perfect and we loved the natural dunes...the ones O.C. has been trying to build for the past 20 years. But the sand is really hard (I rested my heels in my flip flops while sunbathing!) But my DH still managed to build a few castles. (He has one from our last trip posted on google earth, and another from the beach at the Contemporary.)

By the way, the CM's at HH couldn't be more helpful. Mike? the pool man at the beach house had lots of recommendations, if only we had more time. I love the one bedrooms, but I might consider studio just to have a longer stay. Its just the two of us, so maybe we'll try it next time.
