*HHI Owners and Beach Lovers Group Thread*

Just wondering now,,,if you get a resort mug for length of trip..is it good for the whole 30days..then it would be worth it...they already put coffee out in the lodge in the am,,and cookies in afternoon.
The mugs are length of stay. They are hard coded to be 14 days I believe but if you show your receipt they will reactivate it with no issues.

Similar to @Judique we used ours at WDW and then were able to use it at VB.

Wish they had different designs for the mugs at VB at HHI.

Some of this makes sense...but this March I was pkeased to meet some of these "VIP"s. Having morning coffer in the main lodge,,there were a couple of them sitting by the fire. Got to chatting and found out there is prob at least 20 families that stay there the month of Jan and sometimes Feb. They have been there from day 1. They know staff all by name, help out, talk about having pkt luck dinners and superbowl parties in the main lodge. They always have the same room every year. I will say..they did not seem at all like PIA people,,they were very helpful and pleasent.
I am thinking this family was just one of those that seem to think the louder you scream the more you get. Sad really.
I hope some day to be part of those lucky families to spend a month there and relax. If your one that reads these boards and are from Rochester,NY...Thanks for your help and chat.
I explained my point better in another post somewhere, and what I said there makes a little more sense and sounds less judgmental. Most guests at HHI are a pleasure to be around, and that includes the special guests who have been coming for many years--as you say, some since the resort opened. And, yes, many of them are enjoyable, don't act entitled, and love to interact with the staff (quite a few of whom have also been there since the resort opened, mainly in housekeeping). As with any group, however, there are always those who. . .go against the grain, let's say. ;) Now, do I know that it was a VIP who made the stink? Nope. Could have been a first-timer who clamored so loudly they got what they want. Still, there are a handful of the VIP guests who are (were?) well known for being. . .disingenuous in their manner of getting what they want or flat out obstinate. Again, the large majority of them--and guests as a whole at HHI--are marvelous. I, too, made friends with guests there with whom I'm still in contact. . .who post on here! So, I apologize if I seemed cranky. Truly, it wasn't my intent. pirate:

I’m sure a few people in this group were perfectly nice to chat with by the fire, but we go there most years in early March and to be honest we find them obnoxious. It is a very large group of multiple families and they tend to take over activities and events. It is fascinating that you say they stay in the exact same room every year. This never dawned on us, but good luck getting a non HA grand villa during this time period. Why should they get the same room every year and everyone else be stuck with rooms we do not prefer?

I think you were right on target and not cranky at all. No one should receive special treatment just because they have vacationed at HHI every year. All guests should be treated the same. It’s a timeshare. No one should get the same room every time they visit. It’s not the ritz Carleton.

First off, I've been going since 1997, but I'm not the above mentioned 'same room every visit' people.

It doesn't bother me at all if they manage to get the same room every year, so long as they've put in a request and made the reservation prior to anyone who put in the exact same request. I would not accept that they were entitled de facto.

That said it's rare that I put in a specific room request, but I do prefer certain areas at some resorts.

The thing I didn't love at most resorts was getting a HC room. But 28 years later, I don't mind at all. Stuff changes.

Hilton Head is a special place to me and I enjoy my time there no matter which room I am assigned.

The problem is if several reservations all get the same room every year and they are choice rooms (remember this is in reference to several families that travel together— maybe 20 from what I can tell), then everyone else is left with the “crappy” rooms even if they make a request because these VIP types expect the same rooms. If you look at GVs, there are 5, right? If 4 are taken by the same exact people every year and the only one left is the HA villa and that goes to the family who hasn’t been going since the resort’s inception, that’s ridiculous. We don’t complain about the rooms we get, but we have made requests at HHI. And we have NEVER gotten a request fulfilled there. I had no idea that groups of people were getting the same exact rooms every year. That’s simply not fair.

I can only guess these guest book at 11months and request at that time. For a room booker, much easier to see and book same rooms and work others from there. For what it is worth, the ones I spoke with were singles or couples,,,so no one needing GV or even 2bdrms. Most studios or 1 bdrm.

I have heard the term used at DHHIR for a couple to book a 2 bedroom and only use one side during their stay.
"One Sider"

I'm trying to figure out why a couple would do that. I thought of the need/want for 2 Bedrooms or the fact that one spouse is a very loud snorer. But in either of those cases, they wouldn't really be "one-sider"-s. Could it be that maybe they want to be in a particular building which only have 2 bedrooms? I do know that I happened to look recently and compared point "prices" for one vs. two bedroom villas. I was amazed at how little more 2 bedroom villas cost.

I have heard DHHIR say that the "one-siders" book the 2 bedrooms since they may not have booked in time for a studio/1 bedroom or sold out already.
We know that 2 bedrooms at DHHIR are way easier to book than studios/1 bedrooms. (70+ vs. roughly 20 each)
I notice this frequently on the cash side of DHHIR. You normally can find a 2 bedroom within 60 days open, but rarely a GV/1 bed/ studio.

There are only 21 studios and 21 one bedrooms, but there are 76 dedicated 2 bedrooms. So it is much easier to get a 2 bed rather than a studio or 1 bed especially at 7 months.

And as pp have mentioned,,,not much difference in the 1bdrm compared to 2bdrm.....Also I was thinking book the 2bdrm for the month,,invite kids or friends for week at a time,,never need to move.

All good reasons. Dummy me should have thought of the “ not booking in time to get a 1 BR” since that’s what almost happened to us once but then a 1 BR came thru for a few minutes, the right few minutes.

Location is a reason to pay a few more points for a two bedroom.

One bedrooms and studios are either in Live Oak Lodge or under a grand villa.

There are more two bedrooms with great marsh views.

Exactly. 1BRs and studios are in short supply by virtue of having so few of them; ergo, 2BRs are more often available. I've done the same my last trip to HHI, in fact.

My DH and I stayed in a 2-BR last year. We had to reschedule our trip last minute due to a family medical issue and a 2-BR was all that was left. We invited family since we didn’t need all the space, but no one could go due to work schedules. We joked about having all the room, but it ended up being pretty nice. I had the main bathroom all to myself, and my DH took the other bathroom. I vaguely recall taking a nap in the 2nd bedroom one day when DH took a nap in the main bedroom and forgot to put his CPAP on. 😂 This year we booked a 2-BR on cash and points and have invited family for a portion of the trip. We are keeping the 2-BR the whole time so we don’t have to move. If family doesn’t end up coming with us, we will enjoy the extra space again.

With all that said, we really prefer the 1-BR. Less points and elevator access.

Our family has been visiting hhi since 1975 through four generations.
We have stayed at condos, villas, hotels, etc. on the island.
In the past year, we have stayed through marriott vacation club at grande ocean, surfwatch, and monarch. (Barony booked)

After all of these places on hhi, dhhir is still our favorite. (We live 3 hours away)

The cast members are what make this place this best.

Totally agree, especially about the CMs!
