We stayed in studio #1814 that is one of the 5 studios located out away from Live Oak Lodge. We were there from Sun. 5/6 - Sat. 5/12. This unit was very centrally located and overlooked the marshland/water. The weather was great. It was a bit cloudy early Monday morning but other than that it was around 80 each day (got warmer as the week wore on, was 85 to 90 on Sat.) and was in the 60's at night. There were 4 of us, my spouse and I, along with our 3 year old and 14 month old little boys.
We ate at Giuseppi's Pizza which is always great.
We also ate at the Crazy Crab located out on 278 just after you cross over to the island (there is also one located in Harbour Town). This was very well prepared seafood in a nice but casual atmosphere. The basket of hushpuppies and rolls were wonderful. It has a lovely view overlooking Jarvis Creek. Another good dining experience was had at the Big Bamboo Cafe located in Coligny Plaza. The restaurant is located upstairs and is decorated to resemble a WWII bar, great theming. They have great early bird choices. I had a 7 ounce cut NY strip steak and a hefty portion of salmon along with mashed potatoes and vegetables, choice of soup or salad, a piece of chocolate cake and your choice of a beer, wine, or soft drink for $12.95. And the food was really good. We walked over to San Miguel's at Shelter Cove for mexican on our last night there. It, too, was very good. We had breakfast at the Hilton Head Diner right down the street one morning and we are always impressed with the quality of the food and service at this establishment. They have great pancakes. The one terrible experience dining-wise was because one of us didn't want to eat at the Cracker Barrel because we can eat there anytime, I am sorry but a place called Crabby Nick's was absolutely terrible. I wanted to leave the minute we walked into the place (did you figure out who wanted to eat at the CB) but we stayed. Please consider this a warning. It was just flat out bad. We had breakfast in the room most mornings. We ate lunch most days out by the main pool, sandwiches, snacks and such. Had one meal at Signals down at the Disney pool located in Palmetto Dunes, really decent burgers. I love being able to park underneath the pool area in the shade.
Our 3 year old attended the Unbirthday Party and had a great time. They both got to meet Shadow and loved it. Our eldest tells his grandparents that he is going to visit Shadow when we go to HH. We all enjoyed the Campfire one night. After having smores, we just roasted some marshmellows, and it made us really remember how great the simple things in life can be and the kids just loved them. The older one also enjoyed the bedtime stories at Sweet Goodnights, along with the cookies and milk with his mom while his little brother and I relaxed on a nice hammock outside. My wife said that she darn near got tears in her eyes when he went up and thanked the lady who told the stories without being prompted. The 3 year old was introduced to horseshoes on the trip and loved the idea even though the execution is still a goal. Also, if you have never played with the "balls" ie., pool (our eldest word for the game) at Big Murgies's Den with a 3 year old you don't know what your missing. He even remembered that you should chalk up your cue stick (he had played some with his grandpa when we visited last October) before using it. Not sure if that is really necessary when you use the "side" of the stick as he does. When we were checking in the castmember made 2 friends for life when she gave the boys little Donald Duck and litttle Tigger rubber figures.
For those who have never visited this resort, (it is our home) the best thing about it is that you have the feeling that you are a million miles from everything when you are walking the grounds but in a matter of minutes after you walk across the bridge you can be at a quality restaurant, sitting waterside being entertained by one of several really good singers. For Disney to go to the extra effort to build this resort and save all of the live oaks and pine trees, the resort is loaded with both, is what gives the place its flavor. A really nice touch is how they have planted palm trees in your sight line as you leave the main pool area and transition into the lodge areas that are loaded with the before mentioned live oaks and pine trees. We spent most of our time during the day at the main pool (between naps for the kids) our 3 year old is a water slide dynamo and guess who gets to go with him each and everytime to be waiting for him when he gets to the bottom...dear old dad and, of course, I love every minute of it. We spent a couple of afternoons on the beach digging large holes for the boys to climb in, don't ask but they love doing it. The little one didn't eat too much sand.
We visited the outlet malls briefly one morning. The Stride-rite (a new addition) and Carters' stores were our 2 primary stops. We always browse the Disney Outlet but rarely buy anything, we just enjoy looking. We got a box of peanut butter fudge at Kilwins that was enjoyed by all during the week.
Our stays at HH DVC are so restful and relaxing. We love the place, can you tell? And I know some that only visit the WDW DVC resorts exclusively don't believe it but the HH DVC resort doesn't take a backseat to any property. It is a wonderful place for a family vacation. It is like a throw back to a much simplier time in the world.
