HHI-can you walk to Beach House?

I know there's a shuttle bus to the Beach House, and I read the thread where someone asked about driving your own car. But can you walk there? How far is it? DH and I love to walk. Are there sidewalks?

Yes, you can walk to the Beach House. It's about 1 1/4 miles from the lodge. There are bike paths that go can follow. Talk to the CM at the front desk for exact info.

I was thinking over 2 miles. There's a tunnel under the main Hilton Head road too, isn't there?

I used my pedometer on a recent trip and it registered 1.3 miles from the front of the resort to the beach house. This was using the tunnel under 278 and following the bike path through Palmetto Dunes.

You can walk it, but the question is whether you will want to. It kind of depends on the time of year and what you're doing. A walk in autumn or winter would be quite pleasant. A walk (especially back) in August after a day at the beach in wet and sandy bathing suits would be awful.

I agree with GrammieMame , it is to far in the hot summer months.Especially if you have to carry water toys for kids,drinks, snacks, etc.

Also ... the road leading to the beach house can be very busy. DH and I were there in early May a couple of years ago which is not a peak time. We love to walk, but did not enjoy the this one. Way too much traffic and noise for us.

Is it convenient to ride a bike to the beach?

We have rode bikes several times to the beach at HH. Then when we get back to the resort, we cool off in the pool. IMHO, walking to the beach would be long hall.

Try driving to the beach house. Takes about 5-8 minutes. Parking is in an outside lot or a grage under main building for about 50 cars (estimate). Check this out and you can decide if you want to try biking. I would't walk it or bike it if you are carrying anything other than yourself and your bathing suit.

We'll be going in March, no bathing suits-maybe it will be not too busy. Do you think we'd have trouble finding a parking place if we drive over?
BTW, I know Sterling-used to live in Paxton, supervisor lived in Sterling.

I went last year at the end of May and didn't have any trouble finding a parking space at the Beach House. I inquired on this board once about whether parking spots were harder to find in high season (June through August) and a regular summer visitor visitor said they had not encountered problems then either.
We didn't take the shuttle bus but it seemed to come at least every half hour. The only restricting factor about the shuttle is that I believe it stops at 4pm. The shuttle we observed was a Ford econoline van that probaly seated about 10 people. The DVC resort rents bicycles. I think they were about $10 per day.
There are off site bicycle rental that might be cheaper. I remember a rental place across the street on the outbound side of Rt 278. You would have to turn right out of the resort onto 278 and then make a u-turn and head back toward the mainland.

Hilton head is an island made up of gated communities.
Be thankful your not in Paxton now. The cold wave we are experiencing had the temperature down to 15F last night with the wind chill.

I have walked to the beach house several times, and even with my bad knees it was not a bad walk. I would not want to do it if I had a lot of stuff to carry or on a very hot and humid day, and I'm not a pool or beach person, so I don't have to walk back in a wet bathing suit. The road that you walk along does have quite a bit of traffic so you have to be carefull. There is also a store about half way there that I stop at to break the walk. I do not think it would be a good idea to walk there with children.

You mean HH is clothing optional at the end of the winter season? Woo-Hoo!

I found this thread kind of ironic...people who walk 5-10 times as far when visiting the parks finding a 20 minute walk to be too long.

As far as the ironic part, you have a good point. It's just the wet, sandy bathing suit part that sounds miserable.
