February 1-5: Daily: Alligator Wine & Cheese! Enjoy a sunset cruise on the freshwater lakes of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve and discover indigenous plants and animals while enjoying complimentary wine and cheese. Please call for schedule. February 1-28: The Coastal Discovery Museum is pleased to display the winners from the 2014 Palmetto Quilt Guild’s Quilt Festival. Ever wonder why one piece of art is chosen over another? Why one quilt won a “Best” in category when you liked another one better? Best of Hilton Head Island – In the Judge’s Eyes” will feature several of the winners of this annual event as well as comments from the judge about each one. The exhibition will also feature other examples of work by members of the Palmetto Quilt Guild. In addition to the display, two special programs are planned to discuss the winners. Free presentations and discussions will be held on Tuesday, January 20 and Tuesday, February 17, from 10:30 a.m. -12 p.m. The Coastal Discovery Museum is open from 9 a.m. -4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sundays. coastaldiscovery.org. February 1 - 8: The Coastal Discovery Museum will open a new exhibit in the Hilton Head Regional Healthcare Temporary Exhibit Gallery with a theme of close up views of animals and plants in the Lowcountry. The combination of location and weather make the Lowcountry a place with great diversity in flora and fauna. This exhibit will show the beauty of many small details in nature all around us. The exhibit encompasses either small animals and plants or parts of them that cannot fully be appreciated by the naked eye. Most of the photos featured in the exhibit were taken with the aid of a macro lens, others were taken as close up views with regular lens. The Museum would like to express its appreciation to the Camera Club of Hilton Head Island for their kind cooperation in assisting with this exhibit. Tuesday & Thursday: May River History and Science Expedition at The Coastal Discovery Museum! This 2 hour Bluffton cruise will allow you to discover the small town, its historical relevance and ecological importance to the area. Your guide is a local marine biologist and 4th generation Bluffton resident, Capt. Amber Kuehn. This tour is a lecture on the water amidst environmental beauty and in historic May River which was the site of the Bluffton Expedition during the Civil War. February 6-7: Get Inspired, Get Healthy, Get Moving! wellness weekend. Motivational fitness expert and founder of Shapely Girl Fitness, Debra Mazda, M.Ed., CPT, will have sessions covering wellness after 50. Registration fee is $20 and includes Friday dinner, Saturday lunch and gift bag. The first 50 to register will receive an exercise DVD. Pre-registration is requested by February 2. February 7: A Taste of Gullah, 12-3 p.m, Art Center of Coastal Carolina, 14 Shelter Cove Lane. Native Island heritage and culture got the star treatment at this celebration of all things Gullah. The event features lip-smacking Lowcountry specialties such as barbecue ribs, conch stew, shrimp and grits, rice and beans, and okra gumbo, and includes a full plate of storytelling, gospel music and crafts. February 10-March 1: The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina presents Ring of Fire:The Music of Johnny Cash! From the iconic songbook of Johnny Cash comes this unique musical about love and faith, home and family, struggle and success and rowdiness and redemption. More than two dozen classic hits – including “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and the title tune paint a musical portrait of The Man in Black that promises to be a foot-tappin’, crowd-pleasin’ salute to a uniquely American legend! February 10 – March 30: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host the Camera Club of Hilton Head Island with “Lowcountry Through The Lens – A Photographic Exhibition” in the Hilton Head Regional Health Care temporary exhibit gallery. The exhibit showcases the artistic expression of many of the 150 club members as well as the club’s Kurtzberg Award winners from Hilton Head High School Visual Arts Program in Photography. In addition to the exhibit, there will be a series of Saturday morning “Gallery Talks” during the course of the exhibition. The “Gallery Talks”, on a variety of subjects for beginners through advanced photographers, will be led by expert club members. The “Gallery Talks” begin at 10:30 a.m. and are open to the public free of charge. Images as well as unframed photographs and note cards, will be available for purchase during the exhibition. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

February 11: The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn will present a program on the South Carolina Artificial Reef System. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has created one of the most successful and best managed artificial reef systems on the Atlantic Coast. David Harter, president of the Hilton Head Island Sportfishing Club and Director for the Hilton Head Reef Foundation will provide an above-water and underwater tour of how Beaufort County’s inshore and offshore were built and how to fish them. February 14: The Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn offers Sweetgrass Basket Making classes. Learn about the history of the Sweetgrass basket, one of the Lowcountry’s best known art forms, from a local Gullah basket maker. Then, try your hand at starting a basket of your own using locally found natural materials. February 16: Great Performances Series at the Arts Center, presents Jeanne Robertson! Jeanne Robertson is an expert in humor, whether regaling audiences with her experiences as a 6’2″ Miss Congeniality winner in Miss America or teaching how to “develop a sense of humor.” She can be heard daily on Sirius Radio’s Laugh USA. 8 p.m. $51 ticket price. Thursdays: Nature Photography at the Coastal Discovery Museum, from 2-3:30 p.m., professional photographer Scott Moody teach the ‘tricks of the trade’ of nature photography. After a brief introduction indoors, participants will explore the scenic and historic Honey Horn grounds to learn about lighting, subject matter, and composition. 70 Honey Horn Dr. The class is appropriate for those 12 and older and space is limited. February 19–22: Hilton Head Preparatory School performing arts department, led by Peggy Trecker White, presents “Bring it On,” based on the hit movie, which tells the story of the challenges and unexpected bonds formed through the thrill of an extreme cheerleading competition. With a colorful crew of characters, an exciting fresh sound and explosive dance, this hilariously universal story is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for all ages. February 28: The Coastal Discovery Museum has announced a cruise for the winter months. The cruise will explore the waterways around the Pinckney Island Forest Preserve on board the Tammy Jane. The 2-hour educational cruise will circumnavigate the Pinckney Island (Skull Creek and Mackay Creek). You will learn about the salt marsh, maritime forest, barrier islands, and the history of Pinckney Island. A naturalist on board will help with identifying any plants or animals that are visible.
