The points for HH are so much cheaper in January. I am thinking of booking HH in January but don't own there. What are the chances of getting a GV at 7 months in January there?

Also, what are the downsides and upsides to staying there in January?

We have been able to get a GV at 7 months out HH at various times of the year. The downside could be the weather, but I will tell you we were there the later part of April one year and it was freezing for a couple days and then it warmed up. It's weather. The pool is heated, we enjoyed the hot tub. If you do get the GV there is a fireplace for you to enjoy! The entire GV is so much fun. They still have activities resort and around. Plenty to enjoy!

I live in NC and would not consider going in January. Just still too cold. Remember, there are no indoor pools. Also, the area in general may be more closed down seasonally.

But when I lived in Ohio, yeah, any break in the weather or getting away from that "lake effect" might sound good!:rotfl2:

The weather can be the biggest drawback at HH in January, but it will definitely be warmer than what you are used to in MI at that time.

There are some great discounts at the restaurants then, the pools are heated and most activities are still available (dependent on the weather).

There are many things to enjoy during the winter months with the art galleries, water activities (temperature dependent), shopping at the nearby outlets, dining, performance art (the arts center is a short walk from the resort with great productions throughout the year), sports (golfing and tennis are still accessible thru the winter), biking (miles and miles of paved bike paths), and much more.

While the weather might be an issue, it can still be a great opportunity for a winter escape.

Right at 7 months, GVs are often still available for January reservations. They are well worth the try!

Enjoy! :)

I found some pics from our last GV at HH!

Plus the CMs are so wonderful and gracious at HHI. DH and I had a great time at HH last January, even tho there were "whitecaps" on the hot tub one freezing am. We dyed mickey tshirts, listened to B'leu's tales, saw Shadow, went on nature walks with Gwyn, ate at Eat, and Orchid's, and Sea Shack and had a wonderfully relaxing, if cold time.

Daytime highs will be 50s and 60s so you won,t be swimmimg in the pool or sunbathing on the beach.

My DH and I went the last week of January 2010. The place was DESERTED! We were in the main lodge, and walked over to the pool, then to the end of the dock, and back to our room. Never saw another person, it was a bit eerie. Also LOTS of things were closed. The day we went over to the beach house, we, again, never saw another person. The snack bar was closed for the season, so the only place to eat "on site" was at the main pool. The main pool closed for rehab our second day there.

Shelter Cove had exactly ONE restaurant and ONE shop open, everything else was closed until February. We went to try Giuseppe's Pizza one day - closed for the month of January.

They do ALOT of maintenance of the resort during January, since it's so empty (CMs told me this). Power washing, tree trimming, etc. So my "quiet time" on the balcony was pretty noisy with the sound of power tools.

This didn't ruin our vacation, just wasn't what I expected. The cheap points cost was great, but next time we will go in the fall when things are open.
