Okay, talk about the bad news and good news all at once.

from the Island Packet crime log today:
A global-positioning system valued at $600. was stolen from a vehicle of an undisclosed make and model in the parking lot of Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort, between 9:30 pm July 30 and 9:30 am July 31.

Just a reminder----don't leave valuables in your car anywhere in HHI. The majority of the crime reports have to do with cars getting broken into, oftentimes a smash and grab situation. So often I've read about people losing $1-2K while they went grocery shopping before unloading their car first, probably before check-in time. Sad, but true.

Better news:
Check out Gruby's New York Deli. I heard about it from some locals in my water aerobics class, then it turns out the owner is the relative of a friend of a friend. It's a real authentic NY deli (yes, I've eaten at Carnegie before), very delicious! Not sure where in else in HH you could get the option of lox, tongue and a chocolate egg cream beverage. Open for breakfast and lunch, 8am-6pm, lunch served all day. Located where Fresh Market center is, next to Player's World (on 278 between Sea Pines Circle and Shelter Cove). Reasonable prices too! :sunny:

Got to admit, it's nice to hear about a town where "minor thefts" are the "newsworthy crime"

A theft like that in Atlanta would be hard to get the cops to even come write up a report on.

A bit off subject, but...
My neighbor is going to HHI w/her family and was wondering what there is to do for her 17yr old son who neither golfs nor plays tennis. He would be more interested in a boardwalk/amusement type place. So any suggestions as to what to do w/him?

Hi,

He could go to any of the many putt-putt courses(mini-golf) or hang out at the beach. I don't know of any amusement centers on HH. :confused3

We have been to HHI resort many times and have never heard of this type of car crimes. We were just there in June. I can't beleive it is a regular occurance. Too bad it happened at all, but I would not say that the resort is unsafe or a crime ridden area.

I read the Island Packet regularly when I'm in HH, and read the on-line version when I'm in desperate need of a HH "fix"... It's amazing how many crimes of this type occur. I think a lot of it is what dis-happy said -- they bad guys know the usual patterns of tourists and take advantage of them. :sad2:

I would agree that the resort itself is probably a safe place to be in general, but there is nothing to keep anyone from walking over the bridge and doing something like this. I would be willing to bet that the resort management is going to tighten things up a bit...

It doesn't necessarily target the Disney resort itself, but honestly, there are dozens of crimes like this on island every week. Frequently in grocery store parking lots, a ton at the public beach parking (such as Folly Beach and Coligny). One happened across the parking lot where I live (inside a gated community)---a guy put his laptop down next to the car while he was in and out loading it up to leave and it disappeared. Really, try not to leave stuff sitting in your car.

Teen activity: Outside Hilton Head has a teens only kayak tour; we've had good experience with it.

There are game rooms and laser tag located at the Family Fun Center.

Movie theatres?

Totally off-topic, but right now my bedroom door is open and I can hear Kenny Rogers singing as part of the summer concert series...... :sunny:

How cool is that?!

Is there an increase in crime such as this during the summer months?

Also-off OT-How can I get a "Celebration" card? I think it is good for discounts at some island restauarants including a few at Shelter Cove and the Oyster House. Does anyone know if the DVC resort gives the packet w/ the discount card?

A teenager will want to go to the Salty Dog Cafe at South Beach in Harbortown.

Our teens bought t-shirts.

This is advice you should follow no matter where you are. Leaving stuff theves want to steal in plain sight is just stupid.
