I'm searching and printing threads for HH info since this is our first trip there. I've been back through 10+ pages already and I haven't seen anything on groceries.

We arrive Friday night and will drive down to HH on Sat afternoon. I assume it would be better (cheaper) to buy along the way from Charleston?

Any suggestions?

There is a Piggly Wiggly on the right - just before you reach the Disney resort. It is at the far end of the Shelter Cove Mall area (opposite end from the resort). It does have a reasonable selection and prices seem to be competitive with other grocery stores in the area. We have done our HH grocery shopping there for years and have even walked there from the resort on a couple of occasions.

There are other groceries in the area, but this is the one closest.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks Doc. I saw notes on Piggly Wiggly, but assumed that the selection would be better and cheaper further away. If as you say it really doesn't make a difference then we'll wait to go there after we unpack. We have a large group going (6 and still waiting on two teen friends to decide) - so eating out a lot is not going to be feasible. Lucky for me my DH LOVES to cook while we're on vacation....and I don't....so it works just fine.

What about a good place to get fresh fish? Same market?

They do have a fish selection, but I can't speak to the quality since we usually have our fish at restaurants.

Hudson's is a local restaurant with a retail fish market and there are others nearby too. I'm sure someone can suggest good places to buy fresh fish.

Have a great trip! :)

I agree with Piggly WIggly. We also expected high "resort" prices at that store, but were very pleasantly surprised.

If you come from Charleston using the Hwy 17/ I-95 /Hwy 278 route you can stop at the Super Walmart on the way in. Don't plan on buying frozen food that can melt (such as ice cream) because it will take you another 30 minutes or so to get to the resort. But you can save money there.

Publix is my favorite store to shop at on island. Great selection, fresh food (including seafood), reasonable prices, lots of check out people so you don't have to wait in line. Their deli is excellent, carrying Boar's Head meats and cheeses, made-to-order sub sandwiches and delicous chicken tenders.

Thanks dis-happy. Publix I remember from the few years I lived in FL. But now you're making me hungry!

We could always buy a small cooler at Walmart. Although I may ship a small one down with some beach towels by UPS.

Thanks for the heads up.

Hit the pggly wiggly...it is so close ( you could walk) ....

check in first and then make a quick stop while DH or the kids enjoy the pool.....I so wish I did that......

I hit the publix further up the raod and wish I had of know about the Piggly wiggly....

Iagree use the Piggly Wiggly, as Walmarts go the one on the way in has a poor food selection and is or at least was dirty when we went there. Publix is also OK but the fresh breads, vegies and fruit selection was poor when we were there in October.

Thanks folks. Piggly Wiggly is the game plan then. My DH also loves to shop - so this is will be his errand while we unpack.

Can't wait to leave - three weeks and counting.

I don't think you will save any money getting your groceries in Charlestown. HHI is not so much a tourist place as it is a residents resort. this small island has 2 Publix, 2 or 3 Harris Teeters, 2 Bi-Lo, Wal-Mart super center (off island)
Piggly-Wiggly, Kroger, I think a winn-dixie, and a Fresh Market. (very upscale)

Harris Teeter has the most selections that I am used to. and like all places today, just sign up for the shopper card to get the best deals.
