Westchester County rep couldn't agree with you more! When I find myself stuck behind a driver near the Tap...more often than not...NJ!
However, I obviously know bad drivers hail from all states. I cannot stand when people go below the speed limit in the left lane. I'm incredibly impatient though and tend to get angry when people go way below the speed limit in the right lane, too! Except, of course, in poor weather. We had an awful wintery day yesterday and more than one car tailed me on the highway. Sorry, when safety is an issue, I'm not going to risk my life because you want me to go faster...in weather so poor that my brakes seized up multiple times!

Sadly, that would only be 65 here in IL--nowhere near enough for the left lane. I'll be moving along between 75 and 80 and there will always be some person who insists on zooming up right on my tail and then darting around.

I'm all for slower traffing keeping right, but I think if I'm doing 80 and you want to do 100, it's gonna have to be up to you to figure out how. I'll get over when I'm finished doing what I'm doing, but I'm not altering course so you can hit maximum warp.

I agree with you here - the highway I use most frequently has a 65 MPH speed limit. If you want to go 75 - 80 you should be in the left lane. If you want to go faster than 80 you'll have to pass me on the right -although if there's not anybody in front of me and I see you coming up fast I'll usually go one lane over. Unless you are being a big dbag and already passing me on the right - then I don't mind staying in "your" lane and making you go around me.

It's not that I really advocate speeding, but the flow of traffic is ALWAYS at least 5 to 10 miles above the speed limit, so you should adjust your lane accordingly. Get OUT of the left lane if you want to go slower.

The left lane is for passing only imo. I use the far left to pass and then scootch back over in the nearest right lane until I need to pass again. People using the left lane to travel very fast and don't do the "pass and tuck" are referred to as "bear bait" around here.

I can't stand when someone just "rides" in the passing lane. I don't care if you are doing 10 over the limit already, if someone comes up behind you and appears to be going faster than you, you should safely move to the right (where you should have been to begin with). You are not the police so deciding to block them behind you will only make that driver drive even more wreckless to get around you. Let the real cops catch them for speeding. I see this happen on my commute everyday. Some ****** will decide to play justice maker and prevent someone from passing, so what does the other driver do?..... Usually it's pass in the media lane when it becomes available. Then the driver that was blocking traffic speeds back up. Just a bunch of donkeys.

I haven't been all over the U.S. but by far South Carolina has to have the worst drivers in the South. I mean after all, the DOT moto wasn't "Highways or Dieways: The choice is Yours" for nothing.

Sadly, the "moron" gene has spread through all 50 states and Canada. I've driven in just about every major metropolitan area in this country and have encountered the same idiots doing the left lane hogging.

It is not about you deciding what is or isn't an acceptable speed to travel in the left lane. It's about understanding that the left lane is for passing. If you're going slower than someone else wants to go, move the heck over. Duh!

OMG, OP, are you me??? This is my pet peeve number1!! Where we live, it is so rural that we are happy to have the four lanes when we get them but it's crazy how many people go so slow in them. The above rationalization, IMHO, is the proper way to drive. Driving in the left lane 10 or more mph above the posted limit does not give someone the right to be the speed police. If a vehicle is approaching, MOVE OVER.

While driving home on I-4 from WDW there have been a few occasions where the right lane was moving at 70mph or less, the center lane was 75mph and the left lane was 80mph and over. Traffic was very smooth and no zipping in and out. Drivers would move over, a real pleasure to drive in those conditions.

BTW, Fl. has the worst drivers from the whole country and Canada.

Don't you also love when someone pulls out in front of you and slowly accelerates causing you to slow while there is 1/2 mile or more of NO VEHICLES behind you!

ALSO, making a legal right turn on red means stopping at the BIG WHITE LINE and then proceeding to make the turn.

If you are going to walk the Mall for your daily exercise, please don't go there at 730AM, DURING THE MORNING RUSH HOUR, if you are going to drive at 15 MPH on the main thoroughfare that runs between my suburban town and the city that 90% of us work in!

I'll play devils advocate here. While I agree with the-don't drive slow in the left lane rule, I also have a pet peeve.

When you move to the left and pass do NOT immediately pull back into the right lane. Look ahead a bit to see how fast the right lane is moving. If it appears you will need to pass again in 30 seconds or less, STAY in the left lane.
Weaving in and out of lanes on a busy highway is STUPID. If you see someone in your rear view mirror going at a higher rate of speed than you are, then yes, by all means move over to the right to let them pass. If they are way back there and you know there is a long line of slower moving vehicles on the right, STAY PUT.
THIS is the way people should drive on the highway. Not weave in and out, in and out, for no good reason.

Having criss-crossed this country's highways many times, both these things bother me.

Do you not see the people behind you flashing their lights at you to MOVE OVER to the right lane, where you are supposed to drive unless you're passing someone? sorry...I feel better now...it's just that I've driven a lot of miles on the interstate in the last few weeks, and I'm astounded at how clueless some of the driving population is in regards to the rules of the road.

I'd be driving along, making good time...traffic flowing nicely...then I'd come up on a clump of traffic...I'd eventually work my way through the clump to find (without fail) some yahoo driving along in the LEFT lane, going ten miles an hour under the speed limit.

True, especially very early in the morning.

Unfortunately, in the Chicagoland you’ll see more of those doing 50~55 MPH in the left lane then those zooming on the right side doing 80+ .

But my personal favorite is those that pull right in front of the big Truck and immediately hit the brakes. I guess that they don’t like to drive next to one, but why pass it and try to go back to their original speed??? Now that’s a “Road Kill” to me.

I don't care for that either. Some people fly and if I'm not going their air speed they tail gate. That's not cool. Totally dangerous. I do move over though. I don't need a looney toon that close to my vehicle. Some people are beyond crazy!

I'll always say to my passengers, you'll see them on the side of the road getting a ticket. And we usually do.

a pet peeve of mine for sure, I also have come across this lately, driving on an on ramp of the expressway and never speeding up! I almost got creamed this morning by a truck because the (*@#&*( in front of me was doing 40 getting on the expressway and traffic of course was going much faster.

And please let people around you if they come whizzing up to your back end. You don't know what's going on. Yes they may just be an idiot, but there was a time when I was trying to get the hospital for a family emergency and I was trying to get through traffic when the guy in the truck in the left lane thought he was going to "teach me a lesson" by not letting me pass. I was in tears by the time I was finally ALLOWED to pass him. I lost precious time that day due to someone else's perceptions and pettiness.

I agree that it is important to keep up speed when driving and understand that drivers that are too slow can cause a hazard, but drivers who feel the need to drive at excessive speeds and try to ride people's tails are just as hazardous. No one person has a sole right to the roads and no one should feel that other need to get out of their way. Perhaps a little more thoughtfulness and courtesy on the roads would result in less road rage and fewer accidents.
