:cool1: DS23 has officially moved into his new apartment! I have been collecting things for both kids since they started high school so they'd have some stuff when they left home for college or their first apartment. His "box" is actually 4 boxes--some pots & pans, some canned goods, macaroni, spaghetti, salt & pepper, a shower curtain, some cleaning products, sheets, towels, coffee cups, etc. When I first told him about it, he kinda brushed it off like "Naw, we've got everything we need." Well, they got their stuff moved in and I guess it wasn't as complete as they thought it would be. He came over last night looking for some cans of soup, so I reminded him that I still have his boxes. I opened them up and showed him and I thought he was going to cry! I had no idea that he would be so emotional. I guess he was just tired from the move. Anyway, he and his friend were so happy! Last I saw, they were headed outta the neighborhood to the new apartment with the loot. My baby is all grown up:goodvibes

You did good, mom! Sounds like you raised a great son! May he have nothing but success as he leaves the nest! :thumbsup2

And with that said... now lets talk about what you are going to do with his room! :thumbsup2

A DISney themed computer room, perhaps! :surfweb: ;)

I am so stealing that idea! I would have loved a box like that when I moved out, I will be making these for my kiddos..got some time though they are 10 and 7 hehe...I think a broom and mop are great things to add...I remember asking my mom for those after I moved in since I never even thought of them..

Funny you should ask  His room was ruined by flood water last fall in the Georgia floods, so we have one wall torn out and the flooring ripped out. I have put him on notice that I want him to decide in the next 2 weeks what he wants done with the several boxes of stuff in there. I don't want to throw it out unless he tells me to. But I plan to move it out of that room so i can have myself a nice craft room.

*nods* When I moved from home I had to collect all that stuff myself and it was expensive for a student! I haven't gone hog-wild about it, but as we have come into new stuff I've transferred the older stuff to his box. then last week when I heard he was definitely moving to the apt I went through the pantry and picked out "things to make things out of"--soups,tuna, peanut butter & jelly, pasta, baked beans, cereal. Salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Hot sauce. i figure he won't starve to death THIS week.

I'm just starting on DD17s box. She will graduate next year (*that is, if she passes Algebra...and Chemistry:headache:) and be off to college in fall 2011. I have some sheets and towels in her box, some paper towels, a shower curtain, some mugs. Now that I'm not saving stuff for her brother, everything can go into her box(es.):goodvibes

I'm with you - I have one DD moving into an apartment at college in the fall and my 2nd DD starting college in the fall - I have been buying stuff for the new college girl since last summer - she thinks I'm nuts, but I did the same thing for my older DD and it was much less painful to my budget that way.

Now the apartment shopping has been fun - I pick something up each week - Kohl's has been my bedt friend for the last several weeks - the deals have been amazing. She's not moving in til August 1st, but we have alot of the "essentials" ready to go. Its funny - her and her roommates can't wait to go grocery shopping together for all the "goodies" they need for their 1st apartment.

My grandma and MIL did this for DH and myself before he got his 1st apartment. DH lived at home until a year before we were married, when one of the apartments that his grandparents owned became available and he rented that. But once we were engaged MIL and my grandma started going to garage sales to get us some of the things we needed. My grandma also collected stamps from the grocery store and filled up the books to get me a nice set of pans for our apartment, that was about 14 yrs ago and I still have some of the pans, they were that nice of pans.

Too funny.....when my stepdaughter got her first apartment (after living in the dorms) she moved in with a male friend who was moving out of his parents' house for the first time. I went with them to Wal-mart to stock them up on some cleaning and house-hold items. He was so funny...didn't understand why they needed a broom.... I picked up a bottle of windex and he said "What's that for?" I said "Well, to clean your bathroom mirrors or windows or whatever." He said "My bathroom mirror doesn't get dirty." My DSD said "Yeah, you know when you get toothpaste splatters and stuff like that...." He said "My mirror has never gotten dirty." So we kind of just looked at each other and I finally said "Does your mother clean your bathroom for you?" He smiled. ;) DSD moved out once the lease was up!!!

My 23 year old son moved out 5 months ago. It was heartbreaking for me even though I was happy for him. It helped me to see where he was moving and to help move him.

I know the feeling. Today I was attacked by the Empty Nest bug, the realization that I have one launched and another one who will be leaving after next year. Christian will probably be with us another 2-3 years and then he will move on, too. I'm happy for my kids to realize their dreams, but it's sad to realize that a very important part of my life is over forever...:guilty:

Funny, my oldest DS21 was the same way when I told him I had been saving him stuff for his apartment. Kinda blew it off too.

LOL he will learn soon, towels and sheets, not cheap and will come begging for that box. ; )
