Hey, Florida girls - do you wear white after Labor Day?

apparently (according to the people at ask yahoo) if you get married after labor day it's appropriate to wear "winter white" - ie. cream colored wool. yikes, that would be really hot i would think!

they also said "If you live in a locale with summer temperatures year-round, we can't see the harm in wearing white shoes or a head-to-toe white outfit in October. And we promise not to tell Miss Manners."

ducklite - sweaters in FL have no experation date - you don't wear them enough to get rid of them in 5 years!

Most people in FL wear white after Labor Day - it is still way to hot here to adjust to a fall wardrobe.

It's funny because I have no problem at all wearing white here in FL after Labor Day but when I lived in CT it was a big no-no and I would never think to do it!!

Hey! I resemble that! I won't wear white, in Florida, after Labor Day, but I wear clothes that are over five years old. I've got various cashmere sweaters that are well over five years old, still like new, and I'm not getting rid of them simply because of their age. It's not like turtlenecks go out of style...

Sometimes I crank the a/c so I have an excuse to wear a cashmere robe my DH bought me. Cashmere, the fabric, NEVER goes out of style, but it does go out of season. Also, the style of the garment is a large factor in whether or not you should still wear something. I have this one older friend who wears stuff from Lord only knows when, but she thinks she can still wear it because it WAS expensive, LOL. I guess if you save things long enough, they will come back at some point. Hairstyles are a whole different can of worms, LOL :earseek:

Yes, What Not to Wear does indeed advocate wearing white after Labor Day and I definitely trust Stacy.

Personally don't have a lot of white but I wear it year round. After all it is hot here much of the year and white is so cool and crisp.

Oh puh-lease!!!!! I work in the fashion industry, believe me, this "rule" is not a "rule" at all!

Where and when did this "fashion rule" begin? :confused3

Got this off Yahoo:

"As with many customs and etiquette dictums, it's difficult to pin down the reason behind the prohibition against white after Labor Day. We searched on variations of "wear white after Labor Day" and sifted through the Etiquette and Fashion categories in the Yahoo! Directory. We managed to turn up a bit of information on the fashion dictate.
Originally, the rule was more along the lines of "Only wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day." Furthermore, it mainly applied to white pumps or dress shoes. White tennis shoes and off-white boots seem exempt, as are any shoes worn by a winter bride. "Winter white" clothing (e.g., cream-colored wool) is acceptable between Labor Day and Memorial Day too.

The only logical reasoning we could find cited temperature. Image consultant Nancy Penn suggests that because white reflects light and heat, wearing white would make you cooler in winter, and thus should be avoided. But others suggest the rule stems from a class issue. Acting Director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology Valerie Steele notes that in the late 19th century and the 1950s, more people were entering the middle classes. These nouveau-riche folks were often unaware of the standards of high society, so they were given specific codified rules to follow in order to fit in."

That "rule" is long gone. Pay no attention to it. We even wear bathing suits sometimes down here....in the dead of winter, LOL :earseek:

I live in the northeast and I wear white any time I feel like it.. Have even received compliments when wearing all white on a day when there has been a fresh snowfall.. :flower:
