I was reading on another thread about ear problems with a dog, and I noticed we must have a lot of beagle owners here on the DIS.

We got our beagle last August and he'll be a year old this June. Man, do beagles have a personality (at least mine does). He is absolutely crazy at times. Almost every day he'll spend 5 or so minutes just running as fast as he can in circles all over our backyard. It is so funny. And inside he'll start running circles in our family room and he'll jump up on the couch and run sideways on the back of it. And it doesn't matter if someone is sitting on the couch, he'll run right over the person. We call it the inner Underdog in him. He also loves to leap off the top step of our back deck instead of going down the steps. It's so funny, his front legs will be stretched out and his ears flying in the wind, he really looks like he is flying.

Who needs to pay $10 for a movie when you can stay home and be entertained by a beagle for free.

And when he's all done being crazy, he jumps up on my lap and lays down to take a nap. I don't know if it is a trait of beagles, but mine is such a people person. He follows us everywhere in the house.

I swear, sometimes I think he is part person, he has such a personality. We have two other dogs, but the beagle is by far the most interesting. I'm a huge, huge animal lover, but I never thought I could love a dog as much as I love this beagle.

Anyone else want to talk about their beagle (or any other kind of dog for that matter)

I've had a beagle in my life since the day I was born. I have had other dogs too, but I can't get off my beagle trend, my grandfather bred them and its just a family thing.

Your description of your beagle running around like an insane nut is right on with every beagle I have ever had. My current beagle (one year old female named Daisy) does this and its free entertainment. My previous beagle Benjamin who died a year and half ago at age 13, did that until the day before he died.

They are stubborn, loyal, love to bark, friendly, sweet and I don't think I'll live a day in my life without having one around!

They also get cruddy ears and are prone to seizures so keep an eye out for that.

And yes, my beagles have all been people persons. Daisy is right this minute curled up at my feet, when I get up to go do something else, she'll probably come along just to check out what I'm up to.

Oh, and beagles are pigs! They love to eat, my favorite beagle/glutton story was my friend Will, his beagle ate an entire frozen chicken. They called an emergency vet who laughed as soon as he heard the word "beagle" and said beagles are garbage disposals. He suggested they put the dog out in the sun to thaw out the ingested frozen chicken. Worked fine and that dog lived to be 14! My bealge Benjamin ate a whole huge container of vaseline once and had a lovely coat for years from all that grease he ingested!

I could go on and on, I just love them!

I too have had beagles my whole life. Love them to death, but they are not for the faint of heart :)

They all do that crazy running thing. It is hysterical. And two seconds later they will be passed out and sleep the rest of the day. It is the weirdest trait!!!!

Every beagle we have ever had are such people dogs. They are just so friendly and excellent with all ages. My dog is as dumb as a rock, but my parents beagle is so smart. He truly thinks he is a person. It is amazing the stuff that dog knows.

So, welcome to the club. It sounds like you have been bitten by the beagle bug!

We have a beagle also. He is 9 now, so slowing down. My DH has worked very hard to keep his weight under control and he looks great. He seems to like people more than other dogs!

Your beagle sounds like mine! We just got her last August, and we think she about 1.5 years old now. She flies up over the couch, hardly even touching it. One thing though, I could use some advice from other beagle owners -- we are having a hard time with the housebreaking. She will pee outside but she frequently leaves "piles" inside. She'll sneak upstairs and leave one in the boys' bedroom, or else underneath the dining room table. Any suggestions would be welcome.

My sister's beagle does that same thing. I told her to watch next time he goes out after eating and if he doens't poop, don't let him back in until he does! You could also watch for him to go outdoors and then reward him when he poops.

It sounds weird, but I'd rather clean up dog poop than dog pee. Its an easier clean. Although it makes me gag!

Copper (that's my beagle's name) isn't that much of a chow hound. I had always heard that about beagles, but sometimes he won't even eat all of his dog food. And he'll sit right next to us on the couch if we are having a snack and not bother us. Now our lab mix, he's a different story. One time we found him standing on the kitchen table eating what was left of our dinner (we hadn't finished cleaning off the table, and had all gone outside to see something). You can't leave anything on the edge of the kitchen countertops with him unatteneded, or it'll be gone.

It is hysterical, one minute he's running around like a maniac, next minute he's passed out sleeping on my lap or the floor.

I've definitley been bit by the beagle bug!!

Does everyone else's beagle **** their head to the side when you say their name. If Copper's out on the back deck and we are inside and say his name, he'll **** his head to the side like he's thinking "who said that". And with their adorable ears hanging down, there is nothing cuter. I keep meaning to get a picture of the head ****, but always forget.

Mine does, but for various other reasons. Sometimes if she sees/hears an ad on tv with a dog, if she hears something curious, etc. It's the cutest thing.

We rescued our beagle from a shelter when she was about 2. She's not about 8. She's the best dog. :cloud9:

:rotfl: I didn't even think about the fact that the word might be filtered out.

Guess I should have said tilt their head.

We have a 14 1/2 year old Beagle ~ Beags. He has been the most wonderful boy. He can't hear anymore, can't see well anymore, and sleeps a lot more than he used to, but he's still the love of our lives and we're so thankful for each day we have with him! :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

Yes, all my beagles have done that with their heads, it is so cute! I have gotten some darn cute pictures through the years. I am laughing your word got ***'d out! I knew what you meant of course.;)

My sister has a beagle too, he is actually my Daisy's brother. When we were supposed to get Daisy, there was a major blizzard, we couldn't get to where the breeder was but my sister could. She fell in love with Daisy's brother and came home with two beagles and now she's hooked too! Anyway, I wanted to get her a beagle calendar for Christmas and I went to a couple of bookstores and they were sold out. I finally found one, and the lady said they sell more of those begale calendars than all the other dogs, lots of times to people that don't have them but think they are so cute. She told me to her, a beagle is the one dog you will have that will look cute like a puppy their whole life. I think she is right!

I got the jist, that it was tilt, but still can't figure out what you were actually saying.

2 beagles here. The do the running around thing at almost exactly 5pm everynight...it is hillarous to watch.

They are barkers though and are driving us crazy. They pick and chose who they will bark at and sometimes get very vicous....Not sure how to break this habit.

My beagle (Dixie) is on my list right now. I haven't slept in 3 nights because she's decided that airplanes sound like thunder. She's terrified of storms. She usually sleeps baby-gated in the laundry room, but we let her sleep in our bedroom during storms. (We don't let our dogs in the sleeping areas due to allergies.)

She will also pee on the carpet if it's wet outside. The princess musn't get her little feeties wet. Stupid dog.

To let us know that she needs to go outside she will go stand by the door and stare at it. That's all. If she goes unnoticed she pees on the carpet. Stupid dog.

She's a PIG. She would literally eat until she exploded if allowed. Our other dog would love to be able to graze all day, taking a bite here and there, but Dixie wolfs down her food, and will eat Gracie's, too, if she gets the chance.

She "recycles" her food, if you know what I mean, and then pukes it onto the carpet. :scared1: Stupid dog.

A couple of things in her defense: she is not a barker, and she is pretty sweet. We don't know how old she was, but she was full grown when we got her 9 1/2 years ago from the pound.

We'll be replacing the carpet in the living room with wood laminate within the next 2 weeks. Stupid dog.
