I haven't been to Hershey Park in ages. For those that have gone within the last few years, could you share your experience of the park, additional things to do, and places to stay? We're looking into some options for the Spring/early Summer.

Thanks! :)

We went before Christmas a couple of years ago and it was all decorated for the holiday! :thumbsup2 The only issue was a LOT of the rides were closed. :sad2: We had a good time and everything but not enough was open for me to really give you the low down on all that it has to offer.

We did stay at the Hershey Lodge and we really liked that!! It was nice and cozy!!

I know they added a water park so there's plenty to do there!!

Thanks, Shelby! :) I'm wondering if the rides were closed due to the cold? That would be a let down.

I think they were closed because it's not as crowded in the winter. It was still fun though!! (But I will say this...it's no Disney World!!) ;)

Holy smokes does it get packed now. Someone has a website for it with tons of info that posts on here I hope they check in. I can't find it right now- Kind of an Unofficial Hershey site. It was great.

The park is great fun but don't forget about those hills. People walk to get in shape for Disney- but Hershey to me is where you need to train.:rotfl2:

They have opened and this year expanded their "water park" area.
We have never done that as it was PACKED the day we were there. But it looked like great fun and maybe now that it's not brand new it won't be so bad.

Do you have kids? how old? that would help. One thing I love about Hershey is that they have Kiddie rides spread throughout the park. So if you have roller coaster riders you won't just be sitting waiting for everyone else- you can take younger ones on the little rides right next to the coasters.

Some Great roller Coasters! Fun. The Reeses ride to me is a bust- it's no Buzz Lightyear ride. And it breaks down often. If there is a long line I would skip it.

Another GREAT cheap park is Knoebels

Probably about 90 minutes from Hershey? Maybe less.
It's free admission and sometimes has POP days- other than that it's pay as you go.
The food is great there. Always gets voted top amusement park food.

Places to stay? Well we've stayed at the Clarion? I think? There are tons of "chain" type hotels nearby. Suites hotels ect.
We have stayed at both the Hershey lodge and Hotel Hershey. To me the Hotel Hershey wasn't worth the money. We kept looking at each other saying do these people realize we're in Pennsylvania not manhattan?
The lodge was just motel like in the dark rooms but they do have free mini golf and a great pool- indoor and outdoor. My kids really enjoyed this one. It was convenient. But honestly the other hotels are maybe 2 minutes further.
So it's really up to what you want. I know there is a small mom and pop place that people like.

If your kids are younger there is Dutch Wonderland- but that's for the under 10 crowd I would say.

There is also Strasburg Railway-

Thomas weeks are fun but so are the normal weeks if you are a train person.

Where are you coming from? I could come up with a bunch more if I knew your travel route.

Oh and we went at Christmas- It's really just the kiddie rides up front and a handful of others open. They don't have the College staff to keep more than that open at the Holidays.

We live 70 miles east of Hershey, and it is one of our favorite places to visit, multiple times throughout the year. They offer spring time events, as well as fall and Christmas. Regular season runs early spring through late fall.

While no Disney of course, Hershey is a VERY family friendly, beautiful and fun park. I highly recommend it to anyone!

As far as where to stay etc., you might want to check the Hershey web site, as they have info on a number of area hotels\resorts, including their own. Everything from the local Motel 6 type places, to VERY high end establishments owned by Hershey as well.

All in all, a big thumbs up! :thumbsup2

Oh that makes sense.

We're skipping a year for WDW. I've been looking into Hershey and/or Dollywood for something different.

We usually go a few times during the year as we have friends in the area. You can get discount tickets through AAA and sometimes with coupons in the local grocery stores. We usually stay at the Springhill Suites near some type of automotive museum. Very clean and less than 5 minutes away from the park, the free breakfast isn't too bad either. The Hershey Lodge is also very nice. The park gets extremely crowded on the weekends, so I would do everything I could to visit during the week.

Thanks you guys! Great information! Java, I hope you find that website!

Our kids aren't into coasters at all. They are young. We did kind of "trick" them into riding the old gold mine coaster at WDW. They liked it and didn't. :upsidedow I think they were more surprised than anything. They laughed and talked about it being fun, but declined doing it again!

I'll have to look into the railway. I did look into it once a few years ago for Thomas the Train. My little guy is far removed from him now. He doesn't even remember liking him. :sad2: That is just incredible to me how fast and fickle young kids tastes can be. But I do think the kids would like the train ride.

I'll have to look into Knoebels!

Thanks again for all the great information! :)

We went to Hershey in October- Dh works at UPS and they shut down the park for employees only. The park is beautiful, lots of rides, good sweets:lovestruc to eat. Waterpark was closed when we went- too cold- but we want to go back for that. There are quite a few roller coasters, so if you are a coaster fan, you will get your fix. I have also been to Dollywood- also a beautiful park. Lots of fun there too.

If you are traveling East on your way home you can hit Camelbeach in the Poconos.

The year we did budget vacation we did a PA week and I was amazed at how many options we had and the kids loved it!
We also hit the Crayola Factory

Our week was Hershey- we also did the Caverns
http://www.indianechocaverns.com/home1400.html
That was lots of fun for a morning.
Then Knoebels
Camelbeach
Crayola

We didn't discover the Railway until later.

have fun!

I take my niece to Hersheypark every summer, and we both really love it.

My only issue with HP is that it gets really, really, REALLY crowded, even mid-week. Waits for some of the water rides can easily exceed an hour or more.

But the park is clean, and relatively close to Philly.

DH and I also love the Chocolate Spa inside the Hotel Hershey :)

I'm hoping to go in the Spring and *maybe* avoid the big crowds. Do they still have the chocolate factory tour? I think the kids would love that. :)

That's free and they have it- it's more of a ride now- not real production. But still fun. And you get chocolate at the end.

Oh great! I haven't been since I was a teen. I went to another park in my teens too, that was fun, Six Flags Over some state. :upsidedow It was a good park. My memory isn't what it used to be. :sad2:

It must have been Six Flags Over Maryland, but for some reason I thought it was in PA too. Maybe they closed some of those parks since then.

I've never seen them close due to cold weather, but they're only opened seasonally. The thing at x-mas time is a special thing they do, but not many of the rides are open. You can go to their website and it'll give you the hrs. ect., but just skimming over it; it looks like they don't open for their regular season until the very end of May. It looks like they're open a few weekends before that and a weekend in April. I personally haven't been in about 3 years, but part of my family still lives there and they go every year. From what I've been told, since they've opened the water part; it's really more of at least a 2 day park to get everything done. They also have the zoo that's included in the admission, and chocolate world, which is also free. I know they have the Hershey hotel right there, and I've been told it's really nice, but I'm also guessing pretty expensive:confused3

Well, it certainly sounds like it's a lot to do! I'd love to stay at the Hershey hotel. I'll have to check out their rates. :scared:

$300 a night for the Lodge, $400 a night for the Hotel - we used to stay at the Lodge, but since we need 2 rooms, I'm not spending $600 a night (closer to $700 with taxes and fees) for Hershey.

They have a simulated factory tour. They stopped allowing tours in the actual factory long ago. Too many people were getting sick from the strong chocolate odor :confused3
