Unbelieveable but I've just been diagnosed with a hernia :(

Anyone have any experience with this....I'm going to get a CT Scan on Thurs to see the size but the doctor has already told me that I would need get it taken care of :scared1:

TIA!

My 7 year old had surgery last september for it. He recovered almost immediately. Really recovered wonderfully.

My dad on the other hand acted like a huge baby for a week.

So I don't know if it's more difficult the older you are- or if my dad is just a wimp.
I am hoping you have an experience like my son- it was outpatient and we were home by lunch and he was HUNGRY!

It really depends on the person. DH had double hernia surgery and I had incisional hernia surgery. Both went well. Very little pain or discomfort. Just follow the Drs orders and don't lift over 10 lbs so you don't jeopardize the repair. We had the same Dr and he uses mesh to repair the hernia. He does it laproscopically which is a more tramatic surgery for the body but a far superior repair.

DH's surgery was outpatient. Mine was suppose to be but since mine stated late and took longer than expected I got to recovery too late because the outpatient area closed by 5. I was out the next day by noon.

Its best to get it taken care of so there is no chance of it getting strangulated or incarcerated.

My experience is not typical. In fact I am possibly facing another surgery next month. I am the classic patient that if things can go wrong they do.

Laprascopic is better. I have also had an open repair in the past. It was really painful for me. (laprascopically) I think I spent about 3 days in the hospital and lots of pain killers. Everyone reacts differently though.

Ask your surgeon what procedure they are doing on you, what type of mesh they are using if they are going that route.

I always have the strange side effects, pain which is strange lately., staph infection, that was with one of the repairs, and now with this one the surgeon thinks one of the anchor stitches might be infected or has come undone etc. I am wondering if he will do a cat scan again. I really dont want one. I had way too many last year because of cancer that had nothing to do with my hernia. Also another side effect is that you could develop a seroma in the future. I am dealing with that one too right now.

Dont do any lifting etc. for a long while.Dont try to reach for things etc. Just take it easy. I think I had the last one in October and my dh was pushing me around in the wheelchair at Disney last december. I was taking it easy. If you go to disney I wouldnt recommend any rough rides. I think I am pushing it just going on the AK Safari.

I really dont mean to scare you, I just want to cover al the bases.

Wishing you all the best.

I had an umbilical hernia repaired when I was in college. It was hard to get out of bed the next day but after that, not so much. I was on restricted lifting duty for about 30 days. I have a very faint scar about 2" long.

DH had a hernia for forever. I finally convinced him to get it taken care of before our insurance changed. (and he got the big v done at the same time so I think that really sold him since he wouldn't of had to do it in the dr office) He recovered in about 3 days but continued to whine for a couple of weeks.

Same here, I had to roll out of bed, and couldn't life anything, but no pain.

I've never had one, but have taken up weight lifting of late, and the surgeon now far from my place is known as the hernia operation guy. I'm going to be extra nice to him.
