Here, there, (taxi) everywhere!

I'm hoping that at some point in the travels of my many, many Dis pals, you may have taken a taxi from one point to another. I'm wondering two things:

1) If you happen to remember and could post here where you went (from where to where) and what the cost was?

2) If anyone knows of a website which says how much cabs from various locations in the area are? (For example, from POR to Pleasure Island... that kind of thing). I figure I may be taking cabs several evenings after going out for drinks, and would like to plan ahead financially. NOt that it really matters, as money matters become completely inconsequential the minute I set foot at Disney, but still...

DS and I took a cab from the Boardwalk to MGM Studios. It cost just under $5.00 and the driver berated us about how stupid tourists are the entire way. A decidedly unpleasant experience, but we did get there rather quickly.

I think I took a cab once there, almost always using Disney transportation or my rental all the time. I think I was in a hurry, leaving one DIS meet and hustling to another, LOL, in another park. It was quick and cheap, don't recall the details though.

The Boardwalk to CBR was about $6 ... CBR to the Premium Outlet Mall was about $13, coming back it was a couple dollars more.

BW to pretty much anyplace was between $10-15 including tip.

(It was cheaper to get to MGM - we did that once as well - to get a seat for Fantasmic).

This included AKL, Blizzard Beach, AK, MK (which drops you off at TTC), Grand Floridian.

You do want to plan on a range - there are several ways to get any one place and some of the drivers did take a slightly ($2) longer route to the same place.

AKL to CBR---$12.00 + tip.

I don't know if this is high or not, but it was late raining, and we did not feel like treking to Downtown Disney, to catch a resort bus. Dropped us off about 5 steps to the steps to our room.

Our trip from the Contemporay to the boardwalk via DTD using the bus was almost 90 minutes, so we took a taxi back.
It was well worth the $15 and we decided to use a taxi for our evening entertainment from then on.
Contemporary to DTD = $21, from DTD to Contemporary with a different driver = $16. No wonder our first driver wanted us to call him for the return trip.
I don't know the roads in the world well enough to tell if we're taking the most direct route, but I guess you have to watch out a little bit.

Dolphin to Poly for Luau (running late, so didn't have time to wait for bus...) $16 - tipped $4 because it was easiest to just pay with a $20. It was worth not being late for check-in!

Most of the belhops know how much the fare should be and will call a cab for you. On a few occasions I was glad I checked as the cab driver overcharged me. I asked the price when leaving CBR for the Hoop De Doo (running late). Well I know WDW fairly well and the cab driver took me on roads we had never seen before and the fare was way to high.

I didn't hesitate to tell him on arrival that I knew his game - knew my way from point a to point b and I knew that he overcharged. I paid the fare and did not tip and then reported his name, company and cab number at the hotel. CM at CBR said that cab will not be allowed at that resort for pick ups any more.

We still take cabs but it helps to be aware.

Checker Cab - which is owned by Mears (surprise!) has the Disney contract. Sometimes you will find cabs other than Checker around Disney, but most of the cabs are Checker - and that is what a bellhop will call you and the only cabs that "should be" at the taxi stands.

I wish that they'd have flat rates for most routes. If I were going to bid out the contract, I'd ask for flat rates.

Tipping. For almost all Disney routes, a buck or two is fine. However, cab drivers seem to think they are entitled to not give change for a twenty. So if you are going to take a lot of cabs, carry your own change so you hand the driver what you want to give him. If you don't, hand him the twenty with "and give me three bucks back."

I am planning on using cabs for evening transport. Will the checker cabs be sitting at the TTC in the evening and at the Boardwalk waiting for customers?

At BW, the cabs 'line up' in the cut through lane outside of the covered drop off. Just walk up and check the first one in line for availability. If one is not there, and the bell captain/valet has to call one, then a tip is customary. HOWEVER, if you get the same jerk we got last trip, then use your judgement.
Quick story: he dawdled and chatted with people while we stood there for a good 4-5 minutes. When he finally acknowledged us, he took the info and called somebody on the phone. Never said anything about when it would be here, where it would come to, etc... (Note: I had the tip in my hand waiting for some kind of follow up). After 10 minutes, we finally walked over to the cab that had appeared 5-6 minutes before, and lo and behold, it was for us. Last name and all. The clown at the valet stand just left us standing there waiting with no idea of what to expect, almost making us late for our PS.
He was an older guy, and I didn't care for his attitude at all.
