Thought I would post a follow up in case it helps somebody else...
Before we left, I had signed up for Alamo Insider ( advice from here). We wanted to drive to Gatorland and then head to downtown Disney, and return the car at DD around dinnertime. The Mears rate was $57 ONE WAY, for 3 people. We rented a beautiful Nissan Infinity, approved for 2 drivers, for $43 for the day. They waived the fee to drop off at a different location ( we had a shuttle pick us up at our resort and went to a car center to get the car).
It was a NIGHTMARE to try to find the return location in pouring rain. We were told it was simply across the street from DD, and not ever having been there we had no idea how huge the place was- but eventually we found it and the price was okay for us...
