I have asthma that sometimes gets severe too, tends to be triggered by dry or cold air (esp. on aircraft) as well as plant spores, dust, or mold.
My flying kit: Saline spray to counteract the dry plane air
Afrin (or store brand) if I feel any nasal congestion
Claritin D before the flight - contains the "real" Sudafed - actually I find Claritin D works well every day I'm at Disney
A puff or two of my Pro-Air inhaler before take off (prescription)
Best thing I ever did - a wet face cloth in a clear baggie (I wet it after going thru TSA) that I hold to my face and breath through if the
dry air ever really bothers me
Just one flight attendant in all these years recognized my wet face cloth as an asthma remedy. This kit sits in the front seat pocket so I can get to it quickly during the flight, face cloth has it's own baggie, all the rest fits into another one that I use as my 3-1-1 baggie for TSA due to the Afrin and saline spray. That 3-1-1 baggie also has hand sanitizer and a few other things in it.
