Here now and sick as a dog

I have asthma that sometimes gets severe too, tends to be triggered by dry or cold air (esp. on aircraft) as well as plant spores, dust, or mold.

My flying kit: Saline spray to counteract the dry plane air

Afrin (or store brand) if I feel any nasal congestion

Claritin D before the flight - contains the "real" Sudafed - actually I find Claritin D works well every day I'm at Disney

A puff or two of my Pro-Air inhaler before take off (prescription)

Best thing I ever did - a wet face cloth in a clear baggie (I wet it after going thru TSA) that I hold to my face and breath through if the
dry air ever really bothers me

Just one flight attendant in all these years recognized my wet face cloth as an asthma remedy. This kit sits in the front seat pocket so I can get to it quickly during the flight, face cloth has it's own baggie, all the rest fits into another one that I use as my 3-1-1 baggie for TSA due to the Afrin and saline spray. That 3-1-1 baggie also has hand sanitizer and a few other things in it.

Kindermouse - that asthma attack was probably triggered by some type of allergy to something you aren't normally exposed to - be sure to follow up with your doctor at home. (Note - I know someone who reacts very badly to the "fog" in POTC and at the Frozen stage show. Not something she normally runs into - she was a mess!

Given those breathing treatments and the jitters you feel - I'd avoid caffeine tonight!

As an FYI for the others that asked - Doctors On Call takes insurance. You can also get everything you would need from them to file a claim after the fact. Our one time experience with this was really positive. We got an estimated appointment time in about the same amount of time it would have taken for us to get to urgent care. Doctor was totally professional. Billing options clear and straightforward (even though I don't remember the details). Obviously - they can't deal with everything - but they do carry some prescriptions with them. It was great for what we needed (ear infection).

In May grand daughter (24)wakes with what was strep throat....at 5 am....walk in clinc at Walgreens opens at 9 am wk ends...my DH drives her there she gets meds comes back to BWV and crashes for 24 hrs....we head to the parks that next morning...she does leave early to rest tho.. I love walking or boating to Epcot...
Anyway Walgreens was great took all her ins. info... Doctor said she got it early.....rest of the trip was great!!!

Something in the pillows sets my allergies off and starts making it difficult for me to breathe. If I put the pillow inside a thick t-shirt I don't have any problems. I hope the rest of the trip goes well for you.

When I went to Disney World in late January, I was three weeks into a virus that affected my voice. I had an ADR one day that a couple of hours in the park, I wasn't feeling well. Went to guest services, my voice was coming back but slowly, told them I wasn't feeling well and asked them to cancel my ADR. They did and didn't charge me. Went back to the resort and slept.

Interesting they mentioned those two parks...probably the mold at MK and the flora at DAK?

Thank goodness you're ok, I hope you get home soon!

Another asthmatic here that absolutely swears by the wet washcloth - works wonders on all my triggers: dry air, pollen, pet dander, etc.

And certainly agree with everything else tinka-belle said, good advice.

So it got bad fast and I couldn’t breathe so I went to urgent care who sent me to celebration hospital. Turns out I’m not sick. I had a massive asthma attack. I didn’t even know I had asthma- never had it before. 3 breathing treatments later and I’m on my way back to Pop century. I am shaking like a crazy person but they said that’s normal. They also said MK and AK are notorious for flairing up asthma

Oh man!!
Sorry to hear you just found out you have asthma...on your trip no less. That’s crazy!
Hope you’re feeling better and can enjoy the rest of your stay.
Very interesting to hear them say MK and AK are notorious for flaring up asthma.
Did they say why?
Is it all the walking and humidity?

Breathing treatments will definitely leave you shaking like a leaf. Glad you got treatment and figured out what was wrong. Feel better and safe travels!

I have asthma, as does a friend I took to WDW for the first time in 2013. AK it was definitely the flora and fauna that caused problems. We didn't really have too many issues with MK except Pirates, although the swamp land around there could be a potential problem. We rode Maelstrom, and there was most definitely mold in that ride...had to take an inhaler break after. Rode FEA in February and no issue, so they must have fixed it.
In February had asthma issues with the room at WL. It was one of the end rooms and has stone work as part of the balcony. That stone work absolutely had mold issues and I was sensitive to it in the room. They moved us the next day.

And, OP, glad you're okay. Having an asthma attack and not knowing what it is is scary, especially away from home.

Funny... about 12 years back I had the same problem.... I've never had asthma before or since, but on this trip I had the WORST asthma that lasted all week(I thought I had a cold too) when I got home I went to a doc who treated me for asthma and it was gone just like that.Still makes me wonder what triggers this in WDW

Thanks to all for the wet washcloth tip!! DD has "reactive airways" (they stop short of calling it asthma) related to her reflux. She's had a few issues while running this year on those "red light for allergy sufferers" days, plus we have a boy on our XC team who has full asthma too (had one scary day with him this year). I might need this tip for somebody sometime; thanks!!! OP, glad you got taken care of :)
