Here is the weirdest question you will see today...CC use on ship

I just figured out that my debit card is demagnetized. I was able to punch in the numbers where I was shopping but I will have to get a new one Monday.
Now I am not sure if my Disney Visa is also demagnetized; it was in the same spot in my purse. I'm going to test it out tomorrow on some small purchase.
If it is demagnetized, however, I don't want to get it replaced for two reasons:
1) we leave for our cruise two weeks from tomorrow and I don't want to take a chance on not getting it.
2) I used it to buy very nice concert tickets with a soundcheck viewing. These are will call tickets for June and I need to take the card used to buy them to pick them up. Don't want to take any chances on losing the tickets because I have an updated card.
I want to use it for my card on the ship; in fact, I put it down on my online check-in. If it is demagnetized, can they just punch the numbers in or will they want another card?

I'd call your CC company and ask them to reissue you a new card with the same number. They'll usually only change the account number if the card was lost or stolen (or at least that's been my experience.) Then, hopefully, you'll have a new card before you cruise, but will still have the same card number for your will call tickets.

Thanks for the quick response! I am going to test it, maybe even this evening, and if it doesn't work I will call right away.

I thought everyone was supposed to switch to chip cards last year?

Yes, Disney Visa, just log on and pick a new design -- you'll get a new one with the same number. Love changing my design ever so often! Just got my husband the Yoda card

Didn't happen last year for us!

And only 1/4 of the merchants in my town have readers that are actually functioning.

Though since you're responding to something about it being demagnetized...the cards we got this year with chips still also have the mag stripe. And thank goodness since so few merchants have machines or machines that are functioning.

In the UK we have been using 'chip and pin' cards for a few years now, i was very surprised that the US were so backward in not having them. On our trip to WDW in January i used my card once as a chip and pin card, all the other retailers said they had the machines but they were not switched on yet.

I don't think I have ever seen a place that did not have the capability of punching in the numbers manually in case a card swipe was not working for some reason.

Yes, the problem would arise if you didn't have the card with you... such as having the number memorized etc. If you have the card, I can't imagine they wouldn't swipe it once or twice and then just key it in to save time.

You won't need to swipe your card in the ship at all. You enter your cc info when you do online check-in and they will save that and charge all your onboard purchases to it. So, no worries if your card is demagnetized.

When my house was robbed, I called all my CC. Most were received express shipping, I had all within a few days.

I was just going to say the same thing. If it's linked to your account online and will be on your KTW it's going to be charged behind the scenes. You won't be swiping it anywhere.

We've been using chip and pin technology in Canada for years now, too. Everytime we go to the states and we have to swipe our card....it seems so weird! I mean, they don't even have TAP technology yet, either. Here we can tap (if your card has that function) for purchases under $100. Trader Joes in Bellingham WA just recently got pin machines so when I shop there they are all excited about it and I'm like "yeah, this is ollllld news' lol

October 1, 2015 was the dead to switch in the U.S. But the only thing that happens if a merchant does not have a chip reader is, if there is fraud, instead of the card issuer being liable for the loss, the merchant is. If the merchant does have a chip reader, the liability for the loss remains with the card issuer.
Unfortunately, as the UK discovered, chip cards do not eliminate fraud, they just reduce it. And some are shocked at small that reduction has been. But face it, every security system can be hacked. I think Morrisons has hit hard.
My daughter went to school in the UK (Leeds September 2013 to June 2014) ) with a strip card, and her roommate had a chip card and they survived just fine, but tended to make sure they had cash on hand too because those chip card readers aren't very sturdy. We went over the last week of her stay and in Edinburgh in particular, had 2 meals, and bought trinkets and none of the merchants had working chip readers, they all had to swipe our cards.

Chip and PIN in the UK has been highly successful in reducing fraud, if you undertake any internet search you can find confirmation.

The only 'one' issue was on introduction, some cards were taken/used abroad where they didn't have chip and pin.

Morrisons is secure the same as any other UK supermarket.

The attachments show in millions how successful and how big the fraud reductions have been.

Card readers including 'contactless' are widespread and sturdy, very hard wearing. I use them here in the UK about five times a day.

Swipe is an opt out, for cards from abroad and people with certain illnesses. The retailer will know who these are.

Sorry you had problems but i have never had a problem or been to a retailer who did not have a working chip and pin machine.

It wasn't a problem at all for us as American tourists. It was just like being at home. It did seem to throw the locals.

I think the new cards being issued have to have the chips. But they are being replaced as they expire. So in my case my card was issued in May, it won't be until May of 18 pr 20 before I get a chip card unless something happens to this card. I know the dive shop I work pt in the reader doesn't work. We're supposed to be getting a new pos to make everything work including the chip reader. Talking to a customer, he's left his card 3 or 4 times in a reader so far.

Here in Australia most cards are now contactless / tap. If your purchase is under $100 you just tap and go. If it's over $100 you still tap, you just put your PIN in.

We have just started rolling out tap ATMs too. Your card never leaves your hand so you can't forget it, and the crooks can't skim the mag stripe as its not brig placed in a card reader.
