"Her Name Was Definitely Mary". Our 1st anniversary trip, May 2011 *NEW 9/6

I was waaaaaay behind, but just got myself all caught up!! Gotta say, I LOVE your DH's Donald shirt!!! My DH is obsessed with Donald, but didn't appreciate the humor of I'm on a Boat the way I did, so I don't think he'd get as much out of the shirt, but I'm still tempted to track one down for him. :lmao: Where did you get it?

Anyway, hopefully I can stay caught up from now on. :thumbsup2

Yep, this is me. Jumping in on the eleventh page. I am a slacker kinda lurker, I have to admit. I found this TR after reading your last one and I gotta say: I like your style. You crack me up! And (yeah, I know it's a little late), Happy DVC ownership! We ended up buying sorta the same way you did. And I am such a nerd that I spent the rest of the day singing..."we bought some of Mickey Mouse's house"!
Oh, and happy anniversary! :)

Fantastic updates, as usual. Haha, I remember you guys being awkwardly handed the bread last year, too. What a weird thing for Ohana to do-- totally don't understand it! I love the picture of you guys blowing out the candle-- too cute!
I hope you get to see those bears at some point this trip!

Oh don't worry- we will see those bears, and may even get a trip report title out of their show!

All caught up now :) Looks like you had a fun filled morning at Blizzard Beach, you utilised your time really well and got lots done :)

Love your MK updates, reading it sounded like it was nice and relaxed just going with the flow :)

It was a great, relaxed day... one of my favorites :goodvibes

Ben found the Donald shirt in Target. Though if he doesn't like I'm on a Boat, he may not appreciate all the comments the shirt will cause ;)

Thank you, thank you for posting!! I have to say, when you write a TR, and see the number of page views going up but not so many comments... you start to think people find you boring. So plenty of people might think I'm boring, but I'm glad to hear you're not one of them!

Congrats on your DVC ownership, as well!

Hmm good point...Maybe I will just get one for myself then!!

When the alarm went off this morning, it was crazy early. 6:45, to be exact. And that is crazy early for this girl- I love my sleep! But we had another back stage tour planned and we were not going to be late this time… so, we got up and toasted some English muffins and had a quick breakfast while getting ready for our day. We were quickly ready and waiting at the bus stop.

IMG_5393.jpg

We didn’t have to wait too long for a bus, and the drive to our destination was the shortest one all trip: we were here before we even had time to take any pictures of me pretending to be a chair!

IMG_5401.jpg

This was our first time visiting the Animal Kingdom this trip, and we were very excited for our tour. Unlike meeting at Epcot earlier, the group meeting place here was not well marked and we could not tell where we were supposed to be. Ben asked at Guest Relations, but they were not much help. So we continued to hang tight near a planter and watch folks lining up for the park to open.

Just as we were starting to panic, we saw another couple waiting for something. They were on our tour as well, so the four of us waited uncertainly for a bit. At 8:15, two CMs came over and began checking us in. The other 3 people scheduled for the tour never showed up, so we ended up having quite the intimate group!

We started out on stage, in the Oasis area. The park was not open yet, so it was neat to be the only people wandering around. We stopped to look at the animal exhibits and the guides pointed out features of the habitats that are used to encourage the animals to be in view.

IMG_5403.jpg

Next, it was time to think about heading backstage. Just one problem- the character jeep was out doing the rope drop ceremony! We had to sort of hang back and wait for that, but then manage to slip in front of and past this wall of people rushing toward us to get in the park. It was a strange experience!

IMG_5405.jpg

Once we managed to get past the people, we headed down the little path near the Rainforest Café park entrance.

One last pic before we head backstage:
IMG_5406.jpg

We couldn’t go backstage until we got the ‘all clear’ from the performers just coming in from the opening ceremony. But before too long, we went through the gate and found our transportation waiting. One of the other guests on the tour used a wheelchair, so the van had a lift. I can’t speak for her, but it seemed to work out pretty well- she was able to go every place we did.

Once loaded up in the van, our first stop was the white rhino night barn. One of the keepers came out to talk to us, and brought us over to meet Sampson, a male white rhino. My new boyfriend. Sampson was adorable!
He obviously enjoyed being scratched and petted by the keeper, and stood near us the whole time we were talking about him. Seeing the level of care and affection the keeper obviously had for Sampson was really neat, too. We learned a lot, like how they rotate which animals are on ‘show’, and they don’t have to go out on the savannah if they don’t want to.

In the same complex is the elephant barn, so we walked over there next. We watched a couple elephants in the yard before they headed off to the safari. Once they were out of there, the elephant keeper spoke to us a bit about the herd and their care. Then, we got to go inside the elephant barn! I was so excited about this; it was just fascinating to me. Once again, I was really impressed by the facilities and how well the animals are cared for.

After this, we headed back on stage to ride Kilimanjaro Safari with our tour guides. As part of the tour, you take a ride on KS without the normal spiel, and instead your tour guide points ‘backstage type’ things out to you. Unfortunately, we didn’t exactly get this.

There was a lot of confusion as we waited to board, which may have been partly because one of our group members was in a wheelchair. There was already a long line of guests in chairs or scooters waiting to board, so the CM loading the cars seemed a bit frazzled about having us ‘cut’ in front of them and boarded regular guests on with us. The driver of our safari vehicle saw that this wasn’t normal, and made a phone call but was told to go ahead and take the other guests. This meant that he still had to give the normal ‘show’ at the same time our tour guide was trying to point things out to us.

We did have our ear pieces, so I was able to hear most of what he said, but Ben couldn’t hear him at all and got very little out of the safari ride. I bet it would be really neat when done the way it is supposed to be on the tour…

I did manage to get some pictures along the way, though:

IMG_5411.jpg

And because I couldn't take a picture of Sampson, here are his friends:
IMG_5413.jpg

After this, it was back stage again for a small snack and a quick restroom break. Then we got to see the amazing Nutrition Center. This is where they prepare the diets for all of the animals, and was one of the highlights of the tour for me. My dream job would be to work here some day…

We then made a stop at the veterinary hospital, which is visible at Rafiki’s Planet watch. We were on the other side of the operating room that is visible to guests. This is where the tour ended, and we went back on stage.
We took this picture from the on stage viewing window. The window across the operating room is where we were standing while on the tour.

We both really, really enjoyed this tour! It was so amazing to me how small a part the theme park is to what the Animal Kingdom is as a whole. So much is going on behind the scenes: caring for the animals in the park as well as research and conservation.

Now that we were done learning stuff, we were free to wander about on our own…

That tour sounds wonderful! (Well, except for the safari mix-up...sorry, Ben!) I am keeping a list of tours I want to take when my kids are older or not with me, and this is one of them! I think if more people got to see all the work, care, and research going on at AK, they might be more respectful of the park.

Sounds like an awesome tour! I love AK so much I am sure I would love the tour. It is a shame that the safari part got mixed up. All in all though.. sounds like a winning tour. :thumbsup2

I would expect no less from Disney than to really take care of the animals! Seeing the nutrition center must have been so cool-- and seeing the keeper and how much he loved the white rhino! What a cool tour!

That tour sounds amazing and well worth it! It's nice to hear how well the animals are cared for :woohoo: Great pics on KS btw!!:thumbsup2

So glad you enjoyed the tour, is really informative and fun. Meeting the white rhino is so awesome (can't remember if we had Sampson), so gentle looking and well cared for :)

Hi Joyce! I'm a little late, but catching up and loving your TR so far :) The tour sounds really neat! I'm looking forward to following along popcorn::

That's too bad that you had confusion and were unable to do the safari as planned, but I am glad to hear you guys had a good time on the tour :thumbsup2 The picture you caught of the Giraffe was really cool!!

I would highly recommend this tour! It was a great way to start the day in AK, and we had plenty of time after to enjoy the park on our own.

It was great- and the tour guides were fantastic for this one!

The nutrition center was nuts! Those animals eat very well!

That tour sounds like a lot of fun despite the confusion w/ KS.

It was!!

Thanks! Had to get something out of the Safari ride ;)

I wasn't sure what to expect from this tour, and am so thrilled that we decided to do it!

Hello! :wave2:
Thanks for joining in! I should have another update ready soon!

That tour sounds great! Hopefully we will try that someday.

I hope you get a chacne to do it! So much fun!

That's too bad that you had confusion and were unable to do the safari as planned, but I am glad to hear you guys had a good time on the tour :thumbsup2 The picture you caught of the Giraffe was really cool!!

The safari part bummed Ben out, cause he was really looking forward to that section of the tour. But all in all, it was a success!

Thanks- I love that giraffe picture! You'll see in my next update that it was a common giraffe pose that day...

Sounds like a fun and really interesting tour! :thumbsup2 The white rhino sounds sooo cute! And I love that picture of the giraffe drinking! :lovestruc

Sampson was the cutest thing! I had no idea how adorable white rhinos are!

The tour finished up at lunchtime and Ben and I were starving! We climbed aboard the train to leave Rafiki’s Planet Watch in search of some grub.

We swung by Tusker House because friends of ours had highly recommended it. We didn’t have an ADR, and the wait was about 25 minutes. We were just too hungry, so we decided to save this place for a future trip. On the way out, I did happen to notice that the bar here looks like it would be a super fun place to spend some time. This is going on a ‘must-do’ list for our next trip (especially since we’ll be travelling with the friends who recommended Tusker House in the first place!)

Plan B (which was actually ‘Plan A’ before we decided to try Tusker House ) was Flame Tree BBQ. Probably my second favorite CS place in all of WDW. (We’ll learn all about the first place CS in a future update…) I ordered what I always get here: the BBQ chicken salad. Ben got the pulled pork sandwich and we both got a Safari Amber beer. We grabbed a table in one of the further away sections and settled down to eat. This was a super yummy meal!

Done eating, we headed over to Expedition Everest. When we saw a Photopass CM, we had to stop!

Photo0058FourBySix.jpg

We grabbed a couple of Fastpasses, and then hopped in the single rider line to take a spin around the mountain. This is such a fun ride!
The FP wouldn’t be good for some time, so we decided to head over to Dinoland. We stopped along the way for a frozen chai and ended up drinking it while sitting on a bench on the Cretacious Trail near Dinosaur. This is a kind of out of the way place, and the trail was quiet (except for the occasional dinosaur noise, which was kinda cool!). A few groups of people passed by and we had fun observing them. Once we were done with our chai, we rode Dinosaur. That’s a ride I really, really like and can’t explain why. It’s just fun!

It’s Tough to Be a Bug was next, and we only had to wait a little bit.

IMG_5418.jpg

Have you ever seen anyone look so tough?

After the show, we took a left out of the theater to check out the Tree of Life carvings we never see. I thought this bunny was so cute!

IMG_5419.jpg

We headed back over to Everest with our FPs and rode again.

IMG_5417.jpg

We had just enough time before the parade to get a few Photopass pics by the tree:

The cotton-top tamarind pictures and the one with the characters where surprise bonuses on our Photopass CD. Pretty neat!

By now we were ready to head out, and it was just about 3:30. On the way out, we took a picture of this Painted Stork learning about how to be a Painted Stork

IMG_5422.jpg

We took the short bus ride to Jambo house because we wanted to pick up some things in the gift shop there.
When we asked the CM for a bottle of rum, we got carded for the first time! When the CM saw the birth dates on our IDs, she actually said “Wow” because we are old. Then she said we looked young. But then she corrected herself and singled out Ben and said he looked young. I guess me, not so much :rotfl:

We walked back to Kidani and took short naps before getting ready for dinner at Sanaa. This was a meal I was super-dee-duper looking forward to!
We checked in early, and finally took advantage of the savannah at our resort:

IMG_5440.jpg

This was my signature picture of the day, I guess!

Then it was time for eats! We started with a couple of cocktails. A mango margarita for me and something with the word ‘cooler’ in it for Ben.

IMG_5442.jpg

I started off hungry and sad:
IMG_5443.jpg

But margaritas make me happy!
IMG_5445.jpg

We had the bread service and chose papadum, naan and paneer parantha. For dips we had mango chutney, cucumber raita and red chile sambal
IMG_5446.jpg

We loved this! The cucumber raita was my favorite- very refreshing!

For an entrée, I had red curry chicken and coconut curry lamb. Ben had Green curry shrimp and Durban chicken.
We both decided that the Durban chicken was the best!

Dessert was the Dessert Trio - Chocolate Cake, Tropical Fruit Kulfi, and Chai Cream and a pressed pot of coffee. This was also super delicious!

IMG_5447.jpg

Sanaa is a gorgeous restaurant with a delicious menu! We absolutely loved our meal here. I am positive we’ll be back sometime.

After dinner, we were feeling pretty good and not quite ready to call it a night. So off we set on another adventure…

Ben and I headed out to the bus stop, and it wasn’t long before we were on our way.
You’re not going to believe this, but I managed to do an even better chair impression:

IMG_5448.jpg

At about 8:30, we arrived at our destination: Magic Kingdom! We didn’t have many things on the agenda, just wanted to soak up some MK ambiance. Ben pointed out that I still hadn’t ridden Dumbo, and this would be as good a time as any.

IMG_5453.jpg

We waited about 30 minutes or so, and it was a boring wait. I took a bazillion pictures while in line, but I’ll spare you and only share this one:

IMG_5458.jpg

Finally, it was our turn!
IMG_5469.jpg

IMG_5475.jpg

I’m glad we did it, because now I can say I’ve ridden Dumbo. I can also say we don’t have to do it again :rotfl:

We made our way over to Tomorrowland, since that is where we always seemed to end up this trip. After taking a spin on Space Mountain, Buzz and the People Mover, we headed behind the castle toward Fantasyland. Wishes was going off, and it was really cool to be right under the fireworks. The show definitely has a different feel over here!

There was just one more thing we had to do…

IMG_5481.jpg

I love the Country Bears. Very, very much. Ben used to just kinda humor me, but once he learned the words to some of the songs, he began to enjoy it a lot more. Seriously, those songs are just so bizarre- what’s not to love?
IMG_5478.jpg

I believe it was after watching the show this night that we realized Ben had learned one of the songs wrong. There’s a song that goes like this:

“Ring-a-ding-ding Mary, Prettiest little gal I ever did see.
Her name was Devilish Mary. (What a gal!)
Hadn't been married but about two weeks,
She got as mean as the devil.
And every time I looked cross-eyed,
She'd hit me on the head with a "shevil."

Ben thought the bears were singing “Her name was definitely Mary”. Once he told me that, I couldn’t hear it any other way. This was unbelievably hilarious to me, adding a little bit of Rainman to the Country Bears. Amazing!

Anywho, by this time it was around 11:30 and we decided to head back to Kidani. I don’t think we had too long of a wait for a bus, and we were in our room and snoozing away relatively quickly.

Love those giraffe pics & the one of the stork cracked me up! :rotfl:

Riding Dumbo at night sounds awesome. I'm excited to maybe try it out on our trip.

Too funny about your DH & the Country Bear songs! I'm not a big fan of that show, but a couple years ago we did it and I got a nice nap out of it, so it's not all bad. :lmao: I'm sure we'll have to try it with DS at least once.
