Hemming prom gown?

How much would you pay someone to hem a prom gown? This lady is a friend of my moms and she is hemming my DD16's gown about 2 inches at the bottom, that's all she had to do! She says she doesn't want paid ,but I would like to give her something, any suggestions?

Prices vary signifcantly by region and how fancy the hem of the dress is. They get more for more complicated hems; lace hems, beaded hems, jagged hems, etc. I would call a local wedding boutique and ask how for an estimate on much they would charge to hem a prom gown. Since your friend says she doesn't want anything a GC for 1/4 to 1/2 that amount and a thank you card would be appropriate.

When I found someone to resize my dress(not just hem) I paid $35, which I think was a very good deal compared to what others wanted.......I would think for just a basic hem that is not that hard of work is it I would think $15

I just hemmed my daughter's friend's prom gown. It had 2 layers - a thin, filmy outer layer and a silky underlayer. It took me about 2 hours. I am not a professional seamstress but sew a lot (mainly halloween costumes, regency costumes, kids clothes, etc.). I didn't charge her anything since they are close neighbors, but I thought it might give you an idea about time.

I recently had a pair of trousers to a suit (women's) hemmed at the dry cleaners and they charged $8.

I am going tomorrow to pick up my matron of honor dress for my sisters wedding. The dress (floor-length) needs to hemmed quite a lot since they make it for women 5'7" (I am only 5'4'). The place I bought it quoted me a ridiculous price: since my sister bought her wedding gown there I get a discount, but it would still be like $75 (normally around $200 which is more than the dress)!! Crazy! My DH's coworkers wife has her own alterations business and has been doing it for 20 years. I am going to have her do it for me, it's a single layer, and she told me she usually charges about $15 for this type of alteration.

I am thinking $40 is about what they would charge. I have done my nieces' prom gowns/formal dresses for them. I am pretty experienced and to do it right takes me a couple of hours for each dress because it involves not just cutting, but then to do a narrow hem is a pain in the patookie because you have to sew, cut again, iron, stitch again, etc. and formal wear is usually satin, which can be tricky! I think the $20 would be very appropriate as a thank-you, and she's probably be really happy. I'd have been happy to get just a verbal thank-you from my nieces, but I guess that's not really done anymore by most kids these days.

I dont sew but if I was doing a favor for someone and they tried to give me $20 I wont take it. But if they gave me a thankyou card with a gift card in it I would accept that. Cash is easy to give back but a giftcard is more like a gift. So I say go with the giftcard. Or even bringing her family dinner.

Just picked up DD ball gown yesterday. $55 dollars, I just about hit the floor when they told me how much it was going to be. Should of payed attention in home econmics

I was thinking more like $50. Last year I paid $20 to have a pair of pants hemmed. The bottom of a prom dress is a much longer hem than that of a pair of pants.

When I used to sew, I found hemming a dress much easier than pants.

I would say a $25 gift card would be a nice thank you.

A friend of a friend made my wedding dress (almost 10 years ago) and only charged me $100 and I am a plus size girl, but it wasn't really fancy either.

My step daughter did pageants and she was 5'4" so we had to get her dresses hemmed frequently (depending on her heels!) The price we paid depended on the number of layers. Anywhere from $25 to $50 is what we paid and this lady worked from her home. I did think it was a fair price though.

I just let out a hem on a prom dress. I had to take the bottom row of lace off, let out the hem and reattach the lace by hand. I did it for a co-worker. I think they were going to be charged $60. I wasn't going to charge anything, but I got a wonderful thank you card and a $30 Target gift card.

I thought that was more than generous.

I would make sure that your DD sent a nice thank you note and maybe a photo of her in the dress. I'm a sewer and I do repairs, hems, etc. for DD16 and others to be nice. A gift card or something is very nice, but a hand written, sincere note from your daughter would mean the most to me.

A thank you from your daughter along with a gift card to restaurant or mani/pedi salon for $40-$50. I do lots of tailoring and depending on the type of dress and material can take nearly 2 hrs. to complete.
