I have just returned from a fun week at Disney. I took the DVC tour and am now unsure about what to do. I am a single mom and scared to death about taking on the additional cost of buying points. What about buying re-sale? Is it safe and would it be wise as a first time purchase? Any info you can give would be great. Want to travel but really nervous!!!

THANKS!!

I have purchased both directly from DVC and from a reputable resale store. If I had it to do all over, I would look for resales, as there are definite savings. Be careful to A) go with an experienced resale store who does a lot of DVC resales, B) fully analyze the contract in terms of points, what is banked, what has already been used, who pays the dues, closing costs, and other elements. Also, remember in resale, everything is negotiable.

I'd recommend talking to two or three resale shops about what you want to get understanding of the process and costs.

What are you scared to death about? If you give us a little bit more information, we may be able to help you out more.

Thanks in advance for clarification!

If the cost scares you maybe just consider renting points for the time being. Buying resale can get you in at a lower price but you still have to pass ROFR. On top of that there is a wait and a potential that the contract you are buying is stripped of points or until the next UY comes around. We purchased through Disney just because we truly weren't aware of the resale market at the time. We found the wealth of info on the DIS just after we gave the green light to the purchase. Since, the people in this forum have been very helpful. Good Luck!

Mickeyfan931,

I sense nervousness from your post due to the cost of joining DVC. In addition to the cost of points, don't forget the annual dues, which, depending on the resort, are roughly $5 per point per year.

Being a single mom, are you comfortable locking yourself into something you might not be able to afford. Hopefully your priorities are your kids and their future education, not feeding the Mouse.

If, on the other hand, you feel you can handle the DVC cost, it is a fantastic way to go. We did re-sale through TTS (The Timeshare Store), which is a sponsor of these pages. Their links are at the top of this page. Give them a call and talk with them and get some basic information.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the info. I went to the re-sale site. Guess I'm just worried about all the points info.... banking, borrowing, loosing, etc. Guess I'll learn as I go. The board does have ALOT of info. You guys do a great job.

Thanks!!

Mickeyfan931,
I read good things on here about TTS, however we looked as several sites/contracts and just purchased a resale from Jaki and **** **********.com. They kept in touch with us every step of the way and we couldn't have been more pleased. I'm sure if you call them, they could give some info/guidance as well. pixiedust:

We bought Animal Kingdom Villas from disney (in August), but at the time there were many incentives which lured us from a resale. I am not sure what, if any, incentives are available right now, but you are in the right place to learn and have all of your questions answered. WELCOME :cheer2:
