anybody got any insurance info re the folllowing

my parents are 73 and 75 and both have medical issues. Mum had a heart attack back in 1989 and took a stoke last July. Dad had a heart attack back in 1996 and by-pass in 1996 and has just been diagnoised with prostate cancer but both have had the all clear to go to florida. they have tired a few insurance companies and the will insure them but not for their pre-existing medical problems. obvousley they couldn't go withit cover for their problems.

Does anybody have any experience of this or know of any companies that will insure them. they have been numerous times over the years to so finding this strange. there must be people the same as or worse that fly and get cover but they are not starting to get upset that they won't get.

I've founds these sites that may be able to offer some help:

http://www.travelhealth.co.uk/advice/insurance.htm

I also have access top the Which? magazine website where they hi-light insurance companies who are more willing to accept pre-existing conditions.
There are too many to list here, so if you have no joy with the above links let me know and I'll look at some other companies for you.

I think that's about par for the course. My FIL was quoted £5000 after his by-pass! And that was the cheapest he could find!!!

Try age concern, they insured my dad who had various problems. They tend to put an access on any existing medical conditions but this again wasn't to high.

When the look at the increased risk to the insurance companies and the high cost of healthcare in the USA the premiums are understandably high :(

Hi

Hope I can be of some help. My grandparents who are over 80 struggled to get Insurance especially my Grandad as he had a minor stroke last year and continues to have medication etc. They found an insurance company called Fortis who were extremely reasonable and covered him including the problems he has now.

They were a little unsure a first as the price quoted seemed to good to be true so they waited till the cover details were sent through and it was all correct and they are going to Florida in April.

The website is fortisinsurance.co.uk or try phone number 08005875048.

Age Concern wouldn't even quote them :(

Saga have gave them a quote of £1,300 with a £50 excess and M & S were £1100.00 with a £1,500 excess. think it is the fact that my Mum's stroke was only 8 months ago. nobody seemed that concerned re the Dad's cancer and their heart issues were so long ago and they have travelled numerous occasions since then so def. think it is the recent stroke. Your are right though Goofyish if it was somewhere other than America where the healthcare is high they probably wouldn't have such a problem. any positive thoughts and loads of pixiedust: and we will get them there

thanks Vikki , think he is has just phoned back Saga , he was getting quite deflated after the 10th phone call when some of them wouldn't even quote. I am going to put fortisinsurance.co.uk into my diary in the hope they get next year and we can give them a try

Gilld what did they do , did they get. what a shame.

Hi
My MIL asked for advice at Help the Aged and they put her in touch with different firms?

It really can be almost 'hit and miss' when it comes to getting travel insurance quotes after an illness and SOooo frustrating :headache:

I hope they're sorted out now but we got DH's travel insurance as a result of calling round the details found on the BACUP site:

http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/Home

I can't remember, exactly, on the site where the info was but we had quotes ranging from almost £700 to £88 :confused3

Obviously we took the £88, through Age Concern

I have heard Fortis recommended on here before :thumbsup2

M&S wouldn't touch him for the US this year (despite the fact they covered him last year :confused3 ) but said that they'd have no problem covering him for Europe

As you say, the fact that your Mum's stroke was only 8 months ago may well be an issue.
One year seems to be the magic number :scratchin

Good luck.

one thing we always add to our insurance is medivac - coverage for a medical evacuation plane and medical staff to get us back home if any of us needs to be hospitalized. We don't want to end up hospitalized away from home, regardless of what country we're in - the US or the third world, or anywhere in between.

My mom, who lives in the US and is a cancer survivor, also gets it for her trips out of the US (she travels all the time).

I don't know if this is available from UK insurance companies or not.

Did you try Fortis?

I have just heard that my dad's next door neighbour got a really good price with them as well.

Nikki

thanks everyone

Nikki by the time I called my Dad back with the Fortis number he had sort of paniced and went with SAGA . Paid £1,300 for both of them with a £50 excess whereas M & S were £1100 with a £1,500 excess. But I have put the number of Fortis in my diary for next year.

Alison Age concern wouldn't even quote her. M & S would which makes me think their is no rhyme nor reason behind any of them. :confused3 laugh is she had a fact sheet from the hospital giving about 10 companies for holiday insurance and half wouldn't quote.

Last year we tried to get insurance for my son who is paralised at C4 level and there again some wouldn't even quote which I have heard is against the discrimation act. We got is with ESURE and this year M & S for £140 for the 4 of us !

think you are right Alison in that 1 year might make a difference. Will make sure she wears her ted stockings on the plane to :thumbsup2 .

Ali

Well, they may have paid over the odds but at least they're sorted :thumbsup2

It really is a nuisance to have to battle for insurance - as DH says the people being checked out regularly under the hospital, and travelling with their consultant's consent, are probably less likely to need to claim than those who aren't  ;)
