Hi :wave2:

I see that a lot of you have helped out Rajah with advice on what to do/where to go in England/Scotland/Wales etc.

Next year, DH and I have decided to spend 2 weeks in the West of Scotland and also Edinburgh, and I would love some ideas/inspiration on how to spend our time up there.

So far, here's what we have:

2 weeks, possibly May/June/July time
Driving

Definates:
2 night stay in Edinburgh (to include shopping & Edinburgh Castle so far)
Oban
Mull (to include a boat trip and maybe overnight stay at one of the smaller islands?)
Loch Lomond
Loch Ness (or is there not much there?? :confused3 as I doubt we will see the Monster!! :rotfl: )
Fort William
Jacobite Steam Train ride Fort William to Mallaig and back

What else do you recommend?

How long will it take to drive from Edinburgh over to the West? :confused3
It looks beautiful.

A colleague at work flew up to Edinburgh from East Midlands Airport with BMIBaby and got an absolutely stupid fare of £10 each way plus tax :confused3

He then hired a small car to tour round the Fort William area. Not sure whether overall this would be cheaper than driving up, but it would certainly be more relaxed :)

Unfortunately he's left the company now so can't ask him anymore details :(

Hmmm, we did think about flying up and hiring a car but we also fancied the drive, and maybe stopping off for a night half way up.

I think we will look into both options though.

Hi, this site should help give you an idea of things to see/do in the areas you are thinking of:
http://www.visitbritain.com/VB3-en-GB/destinationguides/Scotland/index.aspx

The areas you are planning on visiting are indeed lovely however, hailing from Glasgow I have to strongly recommend a visit if you can fit it in, we may not have a castle but there's still loads to see and do ;)

Having done that drive many times I can tell you it is verrrry long and tedious although with the new toll road at Birmingham it is a bit easier!

I would avoid July if I were you as this does tend to be the wettest month. May and June are usually a lovely time of year.

If you go the flying route you can usually get really cheap flights by booking well in advance.

Thanks for the advice.
I think we are going to go on 10th June next year.

If anyone can recommend things to do, we would be grateful.

Glasgow sounds good, and I think we will go there for 1 or 2 nights.

Have you booked accomodation - for something special look at www.celticcastles.com, we stayed at Castle Venlaw about 40 mins drive from Edinburgh (although they have castles nearer) well worth every penny, we had a romantic 4-poster en-suite room with dual aspect window overlooking the countryside and the food in the restaurant was out of this world. Take a look at the website, it really doesn't do the properties justice though

Ooh, sounds nice.
Had a quick peek at website.

That might have to be something we consider.
Or maybe for a surprise for DH.
I could tell him we are staying in a little cheapy B&B and then we will arrive at this castle!! :rotfl:

Hi There

We went to Mull this year for a weekend and stayed in the Isle Of Mull hotel situated very near the ferry terminal and it was lovely. We drove to Tobermory one day and visited all the Balamory houses with DD (3) and the chocolate shop- yum !

Castle Venlaw looks amazing, and I don't think it's too badly prices.
Obviously a luxury but not too bad.
Which room did you have?
They offer 2 romantic rooms, one is bigger than the other.

A double bath, with fibre optic lighting - sounds fab.
Did that included champagne, or just the fridge?
It says chapagne fridge, but is it an empty fridge or do you get a bottle of bubbly?

Thanks

We have decided we are going to Tobermory for a few days.
The chocolate shop - double yum. :p

In Glasgow there is the Peoples Palace and I were you i would spend some time just walking around. When you go around just look up the architecture is just wonderful and very inspiring. We even have our own Statue of Liberty on top of the City Chambers in George Square.
There is tge Hunterian Museum at the University not to mention Byers Road with its street cafes and bars. If it is just adults only there is the famous underground bar crawl where you get off at each station and have a drink in the pub nearest it.

There is the science centre with the IMAX cinema not to even begin on the wonderful shopping.

The Burrell collection and the gallery of modern art.
There is the Charles Rennie MacKintosh designed School of Art

I love the country and am so glad I live here. Can you tell!!! I even work for Glasgow City Council!

I think it was the Glenturret suite (or something like that) and unfortuatly no the champagne wasn't included, and if I remember was quite expensive - we did treat ourselves to a bottle though and then a couple of days later snuck a bottle form Tesco's up to the room!!!!

If you can I would recommend the Isle of Arran and stay in the SPA, at Auchrannie here is the website for a look www.auchrannie.co.uk

it is about 45 mins from glasgow and again 45 mins on the boat going over. lovely Hotel and there is Brodick Castle , Whisky Distillery etc to visit.

Wow - it all sounds great.
It's so weird - we were planning on doing WDW next Xmas but it's just soooo expensive so we tried to think of something else that would get us excited and give us something to look forward to, and Scotland is working a treat.
I didn't think anything else other than WDW would get me excited, but I really, really am excited about our trip.
We have never done anything like this before where we just get in the car and tour round.
Thanks for all the info.

Keep it coming....

Is Tobermorey the place where Balamory is set? (Sorry I am ashamed to have to ask that actually). If so my friend went there and loved it!
